Tool Use Modulates Somatosensory Cortical Processing in Humans.

Tool use leads to plastic changes in sensorimotor body representations underlying tactile perception. The neural correlates of this tool-induced plasticity in humans have not been adequately characterized. This study used ERPs to investigate the stage of sensory processing modulated by tool use. Somatosensory evoked potentials, elicited by median nerve stimulation, were recorded before and after two forms of object interaction: tool use and hand use. Compared with baseline, tool use-but not use of the hand alone-modulated the amplitude of the P100. The P100 is a mid-latency component that inde

Age and context of the oldest known hominin fossils from Flores.

Recent excavations at the early Middle Pleistocene site of Mata Menge in the So'a Basin of central Flores, Indonesia, have yielded hominin fossils attributed to a population ancestral to Late Pleistocene Homo floresiensis. Here we describe the age and context of the Mata Menge hominin specimens and associated archaeological findings. The fluvial sandstone layer from which the in situ fossils were excavated in 2014 was deposited in a small valley stream around 700 thousand years ago, as indicated by (40)Ar/(39)Ar and fission track dates on stratigraphically bracketing volcanic ash and pyroclast

Critical brain regions for tool-related and imitative actions: a componential analysis.

Numerous functional neuroimaging studies suggest that widespread bilateral parietal, temporal, and frontal regions are involved in tool-related and pantomimed gesture performance, but the role of these regions in specific aspects of gestural tasks remains unclear. In the largest prospective study of apraxia-related lesions to date, we performed voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping with data from 71 left hemisphere stroke participants to assess the critical neural substrates of three types of actions: gestures produced in response to viewed tools, imitation of tool-specific gestures demonstrated

Action and semantic tool knowledge - Effective connectivity in the underlying neural networks.

Evidence from neuropsychological and imaging studies indicate that action and semantic knowledge about tools draw upon distinct neural substrates, but little is known about the underlying interregional effective connectivity. With fMRI and dynamic causal modeling (DCM) we investigated effective connectivity in the left-hemisphere (LH) while subjects performed (i) a function knowledge and (ii) a value knowledge task, both addressing semantic tool knowledge, and (iii) a manipulation (action) knowledge task. Overall, the results indicate crosstalk between action nodes and semantic nodes. Interest

Acquisition of Paleolithic toolmaking abilities involves structural remodeling to inferior frontoparietal regions.

Human ancestors first modified stones into tools 2.6 million years ago, initiating a cascading increase in technological complexity that continues today. A parallel trend of brain expansion during the Paleolithic has motivated over 100 years of theorizing linking stone toolmaking and human brain evolution, but empirical support remains limited. Our study provides the first direct experimental evidence identifying likely neuroanatomical targets of natural selection acting on toolmaking ability. Subjects received MRI and DTI scans before, during, and after a 2-year Paleolithic toolmaking trainin

Australopithecus sediba hand demonstrates mosaic evolution of locomotor and manipulative abilities.

Hand bones from a single individual with a clear taxonomic affiliation are scarce in the hominin fossil record, which has hampered understanding the evolution of manipulative abilities in hominins. Here we describe and analyze a nearly complete wrist and hand of an adult female [Malapa Hominin 2 (MH2)] Australopithecus sediba from Malapa, South Africa (1.977 million years ago). The hand presents a suite of Australopithecus-like features, such as a strong flexor apparatus associated with arboreal locomotion, and Homo-like features, such as a long thumb and short fingers associated with precisio

An experimental investigation of the automatic/voluntary dissociation in limb apraxia.

The ability of apraxic patients to perform gestures in everyday life is a controversial issue. In this paper, we aimed to evaluate the automatic/voluntary dissociation (AVD) in four patients affected by clinically relevant limb apraxia. For this purpose, we sampled different kinds of gestures belonging to patients' motor repertoire and then assessed their production in a testing session. Our experimental procedure consisted of two steps: in the first phase, we recorded gestures produced by patients in two natural conditions; in the second phase, we assessed production of correctly produced too

Creation and design of a test for the Evaluation of Upper Limb Apraxia (EULA) based on a cognitive model: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Apraxia is regarded as neurological disorder characterized by a loss of ability to execute and carry out skilled movements and gestures despite intact motor and sensory systems, coordination, and comprehension. As reflected in the specialized literature, there are currently few tests that provide a global evaluation of this syndrome. This research created and designed a test for the Evaluation of Upper Limb Apraxia (EULA), based on theoretical models of apraxia. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A sample of 57 patients was selected with subjective cognitive manifestations (complaints of cog

The use of a tool requires its incorporation into the movement: evidence from stick-pointing in apraxia.

When using a tool, the agent has to control the movement of this implement to perform an efficient action. While perceptual assimilation of a tool has been shown to occur during its use, the incorporation of an implement into the control of movements has received little attention. Here, we investigated the relation between the ability to integrate an object into motor coordination, and tool use. Apraxic patients impaired for familiar tool use were asked to point at targets located at various distances using either their finger, or two sticks of different lengths (23 and 53 cm). Left-brain dama

Object affordance and spatial-compatibility effects in Parkinson's disease.

Movement in Parkinson's disease (PD) is strongly influenced by sensory stimuli. Here, we investigated two features of visual stimuli known to affect response times in healthy individuals; the spatial location of an object (the spatial effect) and its action-relevance (the 'affordance' effect). Poliakoff et al. (2007) found that while PD patients show normal spatial effects, they do not show an additional affordance effect. Here we investigated whether these effects are driven by facilitation or inhibition, and whether the affordance effect emerges over a longer time-course in PD. Participants

Mechanical knowledge does matter to tool use even when assessed with a non-production task: Evidence from left brain-damaged patients.

In the literature on apraxia of tool use, it is now accepted that using familiar tools requires semantic and mechanical knowledge. However, mechanical knowledge is nearly always assessed with production tasks, so one may assume that mechanical knowledge and familiar tool use are associated only because of their common motor mechanisms. This notion may be challenged by demonstrating that familiar tool use depends on an alternative tool selection task assessing mechanical knowledge, where alternative uses of tools are assumed according to their physical properties but where actual use of tools i

The white matter structural network underlying human tool use and tool understanding.

The ability to recognize, create, and use complex tools is a milestone in human evolution. Widely distributed brain regions in parietal, frontal, and temporal cortices have been implicated in using and understanding tools, but the roles of their anatomical connections in supporting tool use and tool conceptual behaviors are unclear. Using deterministic fiber tracking in healthy participants, we first examined how 14 cortical regions that are consistently activated by tool processing are connected by white matter (WM) tracts. The relationship between the integrity of each of the 33 obtained tra

Reduced competition between tool action neighbors in left hemisphere stroke.

When pantomiming the use of tools, patients with limb apraxia after left hemisphere stroke (LCVA) produce more spatiotemporal hand action errors with tools associated with conflicting actions for use versus grasp-to-pick-up (e.g., corkscrew) than tools having a single action for both use and grasp (e.g., hammer). There are two possible accounts for this pattern of results. Reduced performance with 'conflict' tools may simply reflect weakened automaticity of use action activation, which is evident only when the use and grasp actions are not redundant. Alternatively, poor use performance may ref

Neural bases of imitation and pantomime in acute stroke patients: distinct streams for praxis.

Apraxia is a cognitive disorder of skilled movements that characteristically affects the ability to imitate meaningless gestures, or to pantomime the use of tools. Despite substantial research, the neural underpinnings of imitation and pantomime have remained debated. An influential model states that higher motor functions are supported by different processing streams. A dorso-dorsal stream may mediate movements based on physical object properties, like reaching or grasping, whereas skilled tool use or pantomime rely on action representations stored within a ventro-dorsal stream. However, give

Dynamic size-change of peri-hand space through tool-use: spatial extension or shift of the multi-sensory area.

Several studies in humans and non-human primates have shown that tool-use can expand near peripersonal space (Farnè & Làdavas, 2000; Iriki, Tanaka, & Iwamura, 1996). In humans, the extension of the near peripersonal space is revealed by an increase in the severity of cross-modal extinction caused by visual stimulation at the distal edge of a rake after its use as a reaching tool. The crucial question addressed here concerns whether the dynamic re-sizing of the peri-hand space in humans constitutes a real spatial expansion of visual-tactile peri-hand area along the tool axis. Alternatively, it

Bisecting lines with different tools in right brain damaged patients: the role of action programming and sensory feedback in modulating spatial remapping.

In a first experiment we studied, through a line bisection task, (a) the frequency of the selective disruption of far or near space representations in a group of 28 right brain-damaged patients and (b) the effect of tool use on line bisection error in far and near space in order to clarify whether the kind of action performed by the subject influences the extension of space representation, as suggested by previous studies. In a second experiment, carried out on two neglect patients, we asked whether the representation of "near" and "far" space depends on the sensory feedback during the executi

The impact of dysexecutive syndrome on use of tools and technical devices.

We present two studies aimed at elucidating why patients with dysexecutive syndrome encounter difficulties with the use of tools and technical devices. Two different groups of patients with dysexecutive syndrome took part in them. Their results were compared with those of two groups of normal controls and in the first study also with those of patients with posterior left or right brain lesions. The first study contrasted single step with multi-step actions and explored the role of novelty and consecutive demands on problem solving. Dysexecutive patients encountered problems only with the multi

Using, knowing, owning artifacts: What hoarding behavior and apraxia tell us about human-object relations.

Humans have developed exceptional capacities for tool use, such that everyday interactions with the physical world largely involve manufactured objects (i.e., artifacts). Although research on apraxia has elucidated the cognitive mechanisms underlying tool use, human-object relations extend beyond their functional use to include socio-emotional dimensions that remain comparatively understudied. This critical review addresses two syndromes traditionally studied in separate fields that, when considered together, provide insights into the nature of human-object relations. Apraxia is marked by impa

On the Neurocognitive Co-Evolution of Tool Behavior and Language: Insights from the Massive Redeployment Framework.

Understanding the link between brain evolution and the evolution of distinctive features of modern human cognition is a fundamental challenge. A still unresolved question concerns the co-evolution of tool behavior (i.e., tool use or tool making) and language. The shared neurocognitive processes hypothesis suggests that the emergence of the combinatorial component of language skills within the frontal lobe/Broca's area made possible the complexification of tool-making skills. The importance of the frontal lobe/Broca's area in tool behavior is somewhat surprising with regard to the literature on

Predictors of Providers' Intention to Use a Military-Adapted Assessment Tool for Adjustment Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Adjustment disorder is the most prevalent mental health diagnosis in the U.S. military, significantly impacting readiness. There has been a longstanding lack of diagnostic clarity for adjustment disorder; however, recent shifts in diagnostic classification have led to new adjustment disorder assessment tools like the ADNM-20-MIL, designed for military use. The perceived impact and acceptability of such a tool has yet to be assessed in those providing healthcare to U.S. service members. This study used the theory of planned behavior to examine predictors of U.S. military healthcar
