AIM: To check the efficacy of decompression technique in children with dentigerous cysts.
BACKGROUND: Most commonly occurring odontogenic cysts in the oral cavity are radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts.1 According to Kramer, a cyst is defined as a pathological cavity having fluid, semi-fluid, or gaseous contents, which is not created by the accumulation of pus. A cyst which is lined by epithelium is known as a true cyst and that which is not lined by epithelium known as a pseudocyst.2 The dictionary meaning of dentigerous is "structures resembling teeth".3 A dentigerous cyst is found envel

BACKGROUND: Dentigerous cysts are benign, non-inflammatory odontogenic cysts that form over unerupted or partially erupted teeth. They are the second most common type of odontogenic cysts and can cause various complications if left untreated.
METHODS: We report a rare case of bilateral dentigerous cysts in the mandible of a 13-year-old boy. Radiographic examination revealed two cysts on each mandibular side, associated with developing third molars and unerupted permanent second premolars. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of dentigerous cysts.
RESULTS: The patient underwe

Tooth resorption can occur either physiologically or pathologically and can be classified as internal or external. The term "external invasive resorption" (EIR) has been used to describe lesions originating from any surface defect exposing dentin. The absence of bacterial contamination, an intact pulp space, and a lesion consisting mainly of fibrovascular tissue characterize EIR. This study presents three cases of invasive resorption in unerupted teeth, emphasizing the importance of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). In two cases, the primary defect localized on the enamel surface, while in

This study compares the image accuracy of computerized tomography (CT) with that of plain film radiography (PFR) in analyzing the 3-dimensional shape of impacted teeth suspected of being malformed. Eighteen patients with 22 malformed teeth were studied by PFR and CT. Crown shape, root shape, crown/root relationship, and tooth inclination and structure were assessed by PFR and CT. CT was found to be superior to PFR in showing the multiplanar shape of tooth crown and root, crown/root relationship, and tooth inclination (P <.001). No difference was found in the representation of tooth structures.

Pre-eruptive coronal resorption (PCR) is a rare phenomenon affecting unerupted permanent teeth. The aetiology of PCR is unknown and is often detected as an incidental finding. The prognosis of affected teeth can be extremely variable and may involve multidisciplinary management. The lower second permanent molars are commonly affected. The following is a description of three clinical cases of PCR affecting lower permanent molars in orthodontic patients.

Bibliography was researched in pursuit of an improved classification of retained canine teeth that may, ideally, prove to be simpler, easy to apply in any individual case, and uncomplicated to remember. Desirably, such classification would allow establishing the location of each retention in the maxilla, mandible, or both, and its relationship with adjacent structures. Additionally, a proposal was put forth for a retained canine teeth classification that may clearly and simply outline the retention, be easily understood and remembered, and may also apply to retained dentary organs with some si

Maxillary crowding may cause failure of eruption of the canine. The teeth so displaced are directed buccally or palatally. In both cases, surgical intervention is indicated after space has been made in the arch. Palatally displaced canines are treated by surgical excision of palatal mucosa to promote eruption. Wide excision is indicated to prevent the healing process from covering the exposed tooth crown. Because of the anatomy of the buccal mucosa, however, surgical excision of the crowns of buccally displaced canine frequently results in periodontal problems. An alternative technique is ther

Tooth ontogenesis, morphogenesis, and eruption are under a multifactorial (genetic, epigenetic, environmental) control. The aim of this study has been a genetic appraisal of tooth developmental characteristics by means of the prevalence and patterns of association of tooth anomalies in a large sample of hereditary syndromes. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A sample of 169 hereditary syndromes exhibiting tooth abnormalities was collected from the literature: original articles were controlled in order to achieve uniformity of judgement about the definition of the dental defects. Tooth anomalies were clas

There are unconfirmed, reported differences in fluoride concentration in the tooth surfaces of male and female children whose average age was 13.5 yr (range 11.5-15.7 yr) and whose teeth might therefore have been exposed for 2-3 yr after eruption to the oral environment. Thirty-two unerupted and 24 erupted mandibular first premolars were now examined. These had been extracted for orthodontic reasons from children aged from 9 to 10 yr. Samples were removed by acid etching from small areas of the enamel surface, and the fluoride and phosphorus concentrations determined with an electrode and by c

Background/Objectives: Pre-eruptive intracoronal resorption (PEIR) in impacted or unerupted teeth often remains undiagnosed. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of PEIR with the aid of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and propose a new three-dimensional (3D) classification for the analysis of the lesions. Methods: A total of 164 unerupted teeth diagnosed in CBCT scans, derived from an equivalent number of patients, were examined for the presence of PEIR, tooth type, angulation and position. A novel 3D classification system was proposed and all PEIR lesions were further

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypotheses that children with unilateral agenesis of the mandibular second premolar (MnP2) do not show (1) greater distal angulation of the unerupted antimere and (2) delayed tooth formation compared with children without agenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Panoramic radiographs of 38 patients with unilateral aplasia of MnP2 were retrospectively examined and compared to a non-agenesic control group of 82 patients. Ages ranged from 8 to 15 years. Contralateral mandibular deciduous second molars were present for all participants. Each unerupted MnP2 was traced, and its

Failure of eruption of primary teeth can be considered rare, especially in maxillary anterior teeth. The problem can be either mechanical obstruction of eruption or a failure of the eruption mechanism. This case report presents failure of eruption of the maxillary right deciduous central incisor in a 4-year-old girl. The unerupted primary tooth was removed surgically. The histological finding revealed fibroma with reactive giant cells. Periodic follow-up visits were advised to monitor the developing dentition and to ensure enough space for the permanent incisor.
