Perioesthetic approach to the diagnosis and treatment of carious and noncarious cervical lesions: Part I.

Several factors can contribute to the development of noncarious cervical lesions. Therefore, these lesions can be described and classified according to their primary etiology. Traditionally, most dentists have treated noncarious cervical lesions only with restorative methods, for example, composite resin restorations. However, in many cases, a periodontal or a combined restorative/periodontal approach provides a better esthetic and functional result. In part I of this two-part report, we provide a review of noncarious cervical lesions and a series of clinical case reports showing surgical tech

The role of functional occlusal relationships in temporomandibular disorders: a review.

This review highlights the consensus existing in past research on the role of functional occlusal factors in the pathophysiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The functional occlusal relationships considered are balancing and working occlusal contacts, length and symmetry of retruded contact position-intercuspal position (RCP-ICP) slides, occlusal guidance patterns, parafunction, and dental attrition. Controlled studies fail to demonstrate any association between occlusal interferences and TMD signs or symptoms. Temporomandibular joint condylar autorepositioning secondary to intracapsu

Effect of Wnt10a/β-catenin signaling pathway on promoting the repair of different types of dentin-pulp injury.

How to repair dentin-pulp injury effectively has always been a clinical problem, and the comparative study of repair process between different injuries is unknown. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) often are selected as seed cells for the study of dentin-pulp injury repair due to excellent advantages in odontogenesis and pulp differentiation. Although many previous researches have indicated that the Wnt protein and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway were crucial for dental growth, development, and injury repair, the specific mechanism remained unknown. In this study, different dentine-pulp injury mo

Permanent bruxism as a manifestation of the oculo-facial syndrome related to systemic Whipple's disease.

We report here a new case of oculomasticatory syndrome related to systemic Whipple's disease. The patient presented typical ophthalmoparesis associated with ocular myorhythmia consisting of 1 Hz convergent oscillations of both eyes. The masticatory involvement was remarkable and consisted of a permanent bruxism leading to severe tooth abrasions. Possible pathophysiology of such a disorder is discussed.

A technique to identify and reconstruct the cementoenamel junction level using combined periodontal and restorative treatment of gingival recession. A prospective clinical study.

Gingival recession is often associated with abrasion in the cervical area with an unidentifiable cementoenamel junction (CEJ). This condition complicates the diagnosis and treatment of gingival recession. The aim of this study was to propose a technique to identify the CEJ level for planning periodontal and restorative treatment of the recession. The CEJ of a contralateral homologous tooth or adjacent teeth was used to replicate the lost CEJ at the treated tooth. Reconstruction of the CEJ using composite resin and a coronally advanced flap, with or without a connective tissue graft, was perfor

Root growth compensates for molar wear in adult goats (Capra aegagrus hircus).

One reason for the mammalian clade's success is the evolutionary diversity of their teeth. In herbivores, this is represented by high-crowned teeth evolved to compensate for wear caused by dietary abrasives like phytoliths and grit. Exactly how dietary abrasives wear teeth is still not understood completely. We fed four different pelleted diets of increasing abrasiveness (L: Lucerne; G: grass; GR: grass and rice husks; GRS: grass, rice husks, and sand) to four groups of a total of 28 adult goats, all with completely erupted third molars, over a six-month period. Tooth morphology was captured b

[Analysis of etiological factors involved in noncarious cervical lesions].

PURPOSE: The etiopathology of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) is multifactorial and still not fully understood. Tooth wear is defined as loss of dental hard tissue by a chemical or mechanical process that does not involve bacteria. This form of tooth surface loss includes attrition, abrasion, erosion, and abfraction. Noncarious cervical lesions represent loss of tooth structure at the cementoenamel junction. The purpose of this clinical study of NCCL was to analyze the etiology in relation to age and to identify the most important risk factors associated with cervical lesions, as well as pa

Oral myiasis in a captive hippopotamus.

Causes of dental infections can be related to failed dental eruption, malocclusion, abrasion, fractures with or without exposure of the dental pulp, and periodontal disease. Reports of oral myiasis in megavertebrates in captivity are infrequent, perhaps due to the difficulty in observing the oral cavity in such species. This report describes a case of oral myiasis in an adult male hippopotamus in the gingival area and alveolar mucosa of the left mandibular canine tooth.

Dentine hypersensitivity: a review of its aetiology, pathogenesis and management.

Dentine hypersensitivity (DH) is defined as pain arising from exposed dentine and represents a distinct clinical entity. Reported cases are increasing particularly among the younger age groups and are thought to be due to acidogenic diets, destructive habits, poor tooth brushing techniques, and the increased use of tooth whitening products. Dentine exposure may be due to a number of processes, both physical and chemical, that lead to either loss of enamel/ cementum or loss of gingival tissue. These causative factors seldom act in isolation and include erosion, abrasion, attrition, abfraction,

Wedged cervical lesions produced by toothbrushing.

PURPOSE: To compare the morphology of experimentally induced cervical toothbrush abrasion lesions to teeth demonstrating non-carious cervical lesions in vivo. METHODS: Eighteen premolars extracted for orthodontic reasons were each subjected to 80 hours (1.4 million strokes) of horizontal brushing in a custom fabricated toothbrushing machine. Toothpaste slurry was applied continuously and specimens were subjected to 300 gms of toothbrushing force. Denture base resin was used to simulate gingival recession of 1 mm and a sulcus width of 0.1 mm. Cervical abrasions were analyzed by optical and sca

Lustre changes on teeth. The use of laser light for reflexion measurements on the tooth surface--in vivo.

Lustre changes on teeth in vivo were studied with the use of equipment based on a helium-neon gas laser. Variations of the intensity of laser light reflected from the tooth surface were measured under different conditions of accumulation and removal of deposits, which were assumed to consist mainly of the pellicle. The possibility of using fluoride varnish as an artificial surface layer in this kind of investigation was also tested but rejected. Measurements were made after toothbrushing with water alone and with two toothpastes possessing different degrees of abrasivity. Teeth that had been l

Endodontic treatment in submerged roots: a case report.

Alveolar ridge resorption has long been considered an unavoidable consequence of tooth extraction. While the extent and pattern of resorption is variable among individuals, there is a progressive loss of ridge contour as a result of physiologic bone remodeling. Even today, with best modalities of tooth preservation, there is a group of elderly individuals who do not benefit from modern preventive practices and who now present a dilemma in terms of maintaining the masticatory apparatus necessary for nutrition. Even with excellent dental care, such patients experience abrasion of the natural toot

Zirconium particles in toothpaste: a novel approach to whitening and its impact on enamel wear.

BACKGROUND: Abrasive agents in toothpaste play a crucial role in plaque removal and stain reduction; however, excessive abrasivity may compromise enamel integrity. Zirconium oxide has recently been proposed as a polishing additive, but its optimal concentration remains unclear. This in vitro study aimed to identify the optimal concentration of zirconium oxide particles in toothpaste for effective cleaning through abrasion of natural dental tissues. The study evaluated enamel substance loss (wear) and surface alteration (roughness) across different zirconium oxide concentrations, highlighting b

Present and future technologies of tooth whitening.

Dental stains can be broadly classified as intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic stains are a result of defects in tooth development, fluorosis, or acquired through the use of tetracycline. Extrinsic stains are localized mainly in the pellicle and are generated by the reaction between sugars and amino acids or acquired from the retention of exogenous chromophores in the pellicle. Three clinical methods are currently used for measuring stain removal and tooth whitening in the development of new whitening technologies: Lobene Stain Index, Shade Guide Color Change, and Minolta ChromaMeter. Minor axial tooth movement in preparation for fixed prostheses.

In this first of two articles the theory and practice of creating occlusal clearance for restorative procedures without the removal of tooth tissue is discussed. Earlier techniques for producing minor axial tooth movement are reviewed, together with the relevant literature on continuous eruption and occlusal stability. The indications for axial tooth movement and alternative treatment options are also considered.

Role of attrition and occlusal contact in the physiology of the rat incisor: X. The part played by the periodontal ligament in the eruptive process.

Removal of the proliferating base of the rat incisor did not influence the rate of eruption which responded to changes in impediment to eruption in a fashion similar to that for control teeth. It is the peridontal ligament rather than the proliferating cells that is responsible for tooth eruption. The elements of the peridontal ligament apparently responsible for tooth movement are the mature fibroblasts.

Dental and Temporomandibular Joint Pathology of the California Mountain Lion (Puma concolor couguar).

Skulls from 91 California mountain lions (Puma concolor couguar) were examined macroscopically and radiographically. The majority of the skulls were from young adult animals (57.1%). The skull specimens were from 42 male (46.1%) and 34 female (37.4%) animals, while the gender was unknown for the remainder. The majority (94.5%) of teeth were present for examination. Only 11 teeth were identified as absent congenitally; five of these teeth were maxillary first molar teeth and three were maxillary second premolar teeth. Abnormal tooth morphology was identified in 3.5% of teeth. The most common ab
