Orthodontic treatment recommendation and expected adverse reactions in patients with a history of dental trauma: A survey among general dentists, paediatric dentists, and orthodontic specialists.

BACKGROUND: Trauma-induced adverse reactions may trigger complications when moving teeth orthodontically. AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of dental practitioners about this topic. DESIGN: A questionnaire survey was organized among general dentists, paediatric dentists, and orthodontists in Flanders (Belgium). Three clinical cases describing trauma-induced tooth damage (tooth ankylosis, apical root resorption, and pulp/root canal obliteration) were presented, followed by a set of questions. RESULTS: The questionnaire was completed by 121 general dentists (GD), 47

An ectopic maxillary second molar.

A rarely encountered ectopic and dilacerate maxillary second molar is described. The tooth was found to attached to the medial wall of the maxillary sinus. Its location is thought to be due to ankylosis consequent to injury sustained during infancy.

Permanent First Molar Eruption Failure in Children: clinical management of three clinical scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Eruption failure in the mixed dentition presents many challenges, but eruption disorders in a child patient offer solutions that are not possible in adult patients. The opportunity to remedy the occlusal outcomes for eruption problems in the mixed dentition depends on the type of problem; we consider three major categories of eruption problems and corresponding management strategies. The distinction between a mechanical failure of eruption (MFE), ankylosis of a single tooth, or Primary Failure of Eruption (PFE) due to a genetic defect that alters dental eruption is key to the poten

Restorative management of severely ankylosed primary molars.

Severe dentoalveolar ankylosis is an etiological factor for malocclusion. When infraocclusion occurs early, it progresses with time, leading to severe consequences in young children because of compensatory supra-eruption of the antagonist tooth and mesialization of adjacent teeth. Early diagnosis allows for interception of the problem and may prevent orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this manuscript is to report two cases of infraocclusion of primary mandibular second molars that were diagnosed early and were treated with composite resin crowns. The use of indirect composite restorations f

Retention of a maxillary primary canine: fifty years above and beyond the call of duty.

A case is reported of a retained maxillary primary canine that functioned effectively over fifty years. At the time of exfoliation the tooth was still of normal length and was lost not because of ankylosis and root resorption, but because of periodontal disease. Excellent histological preservation of the specimen at the time of exfoliation, together with a very complete clinical history, permitted the development of a detailed description of a tooth and its dying pulp while under function over a long period of time.

Periodontal plastic surgery for the management of an ankylosed permanent maxillary lateral incisor: A clinical report with 5-year follow-up.

Anterior maxillary tooth ankylosis disturbs the development of the alveolar bone process, leading to discrepancies between the cervical gingival margin and incisal edge position of the affected tooth, and therefore, the esthetics is compromised. Proposed treatments in adults and growing patients have been used successfully, but they have disadvantages and are contraindicated in some circumstances. This article proposes an alternative treatment for an ankylosed permanent maxillary anterior tooth with a slow replacement resorption rate in an adult patient, for whom a combination of a periodontal

Autogenous free tooth transplantation by the two-stage operation technique. An analysis of treatment factors.

Teeth were autogenously transplanted by the 2-stage technique in adult patients and examined up to 5 years after surgery for the prevalence of, and correlation between, tooth graft loss, root resorption, ankylosis, periodontal attachment loss, tooth mobility, and pain. The influence on the dependent variables of independent variables related to the patient, the donor tooth, the recipient site, and the transplantation procedure was examined. Pain was correlated to transplanted teeth, later extracted, and teeth with periodontal attachment loss. The expected correlation of root resorption to peri

Delayed replantation of an avulsed tooth after 5 hours of storage in saliva: a case report.

This article reports a clinical case of a 8-year-old boy, who underwent an avulsion of the upper left central incisor. The avulsed tooth was kept in the oral cavity in direct contact with saliva for 5 h from the moment of trauma until its replantation. Treatment guidelines for avulsed mature permanent teeth were followed. The clinical and radiographic findings after 2 years revealed absence of root resorption, ankylosis or mobility of the replanted tooth.

Structure, attachment, replacement and growth of teeth in bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix (Linnaeus, 1776), a teleost with deeply socketed teeth.

Tooth replacement poses many questions about development, pattern formation, tooth attachment mechanisms, functional morphology and the evolution of vertebrate dentitions. Although most vertebrate species have polyphyodont dentitions, detailed knowledge of tooth structure and replacement is poor for most groups, particularly actinopterygians. We examined the oral dentition of the bluefish, Pomatomus saltatrix, a pelagic and coastal marine predator, using a sample of 50 individuals. The oral teeth are located on the dentary and premaxillary bones, and we scored each tooth locus in the dentary a

Root resorption and ankylosis associated with guided tissue regeneration.

BACKGROUND: Root resorption and ankylosis have been reported rarely as sequelae to guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The authors describe a clinical case of root resorption following GTR that involved the use of a bioabsorbable membrane. CASE DESCRIPTION: Two years after GTR was performed on a Class II furcation defect, the clinical examination revealed root resorption reaching the pulp chamber. The furcation defect was filled with epithelium and connective tissue, which contained inflammatory infiltrate and fragments of the membrane. The authors also observed areas of the tooth that exhibite

Single-tooth osteotomy for intention replantation.

The conventional replantation technique has many drawbacks. The tooth may break during extraction; thus, teeth with diverged or curved roots are not good candidates for such a procedure. The occurrence of root ankylosis after replantation, with subsequent resorption, does not permit the replanted tooth to support any additional load, such as an orthodontic appliance or to be used as a bridge abutment. The procedure described here is designed to eliminate these drawbacks. The technique is based on leaving the delicate periodontal ligament fibers intact and transferring the wound created to the

Long-term results after intentional tooth reimplantation in monkeys.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate histologically the long-term response to intentional tooth reimplantation in six rhesus monkeys. The study revealed that cervical and apical root resorption is a universal complication after tooth reimplantation and that arrested areas of resorption will show repair by deposition of cementum. A highly cellular periodontal membrane usually will develop. Periodontal fibers will reattach to reparative bone and cementum but seldom regain functional orientation. Partial or complete ankylosis may result. A further complication is progressive undermining reso

Alveolar ridge preservation in a growing patient with decoronation: One-year follow-up.

Dentoalveolar ankylosis in growing patients is associated with continuing replacement root resorption, tooth infrapositioning, and the local arrest of alveolar bone growth. While extraction of ankylosed teeth might be associated with bone loss, decoronation of the offending tooth (removal of crown portion and instrumentation of pulp canal to stimulate bleeding) has been suggested as a more conservative approach of bone preservation until definitive implant placement is planned. This is a case presentation of a 14-year-old patient who presented with root resorption in relation to the left maxil

Management of ankylosed teeth using the decoronation technique: integrative literature review and case report.

INTRODUCTION: The decoronation technique has been described in literature since 1984 and, based on the available results, it can lead to considerable benefits for the repair and rehabilitation of ankylosed teeth. Based on these reports, one could expect that this procedure would be well known by the dental community. However, this fact does not seem to be true, and this procedure is not widely used. METHODS: The objective of this paper is to present appropriate literature that discusses decoronation and evaluate the perspectives of the procedure, both in relation to the technique and the long

[Primary failure of eruption: combined vision between paediatric dentist and orthodontist].

In their daily practice, orthodontists and pedo- dontists have a common aim which is to ensure a functional establishment of the permanent denture. Due to the increase of eruption defects/failures with no clear obstacles, the doctor may encounter some difficulties to elaborate a diagnosis or even feels helpless when in need to define and put in motion a correct therapeutic strategy. The primary failure of eruption (PFE) is an extensively studied disease that has to be distinguished from an ankylosis during the diagnosis to improve the patient care. A thorough research of scientific literature

Early hypercementosis and arrested dental eruption: heritable multiple ankylodontia.

This study describes arrested posterior permanent tooth eruption in association with hypercementosis, reduction of the periodontal ligamental space, and bony ankylosis. The severe dental malocclusion occurred in four members of the same family and it appears to have an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance.

Rescuing "hopeless" avulsed teeth using autologous platelet-rich fibrin following delayed reimplantation: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Tooth avulsion is one of the most severe types of dental trauma. Most avulsed teeth undergo long-term ankylosis and replacement resorption after delayed reimplantation and exhibit a poor prognosis. The aim of this work was to improve the success rate of avulsed teeth after delayed reimplantation using autologous platelet-rich fibrin (PRF). CASE SUMMARY: Case 1 was a 14-year-old boy who fell and knocked out his left upper central incisor 18 h prior to his arrival at the department. The diagnoses were avulsion of tooth 21, lateral luxation of tooth 11 and alveolar fracture of teeth

Severe re-impacted deciduous tooth in 25-years-old female with permanent dentition associated to high-risk oral-sinus communication surgery: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The total re-impaction of primary tooth is a very uncommon phenomenon and few cases have been reported in the literature. "Re-Impaction of deciduous tooth " is a rare phenomena involving more often mixed denture than permanent dentition. CASE PRESENTATION: A completely re-impacted deciduous tooth in an adult patient presented an occlusal tooth decay. The presence of the decay cavity indicated that this tooth had once been erupted. After the removal, the tooth anatomy confirmed that it was deciduous tooth. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: The etiologies remain diverse but the

Effect of donor-specific blood transfusions on allotransplanted teeth in a monkey model: Histoquantification of periodontal healing.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Pre-transplant blood transfusions have previously shown a positive effect on organ allograft survival in humans and various animal species. The aims of this study were, first, to evaluate the effect of pre-transplant donor-specific blood transfusions on periodontal healing of fully developed allotransplanted teeth in monkeys; and second, to investigate the immune response against donor antigens and to determine a possible correlation between alloimmune reactions and histopathological signs of rejection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) were divide
