Dental traumatology : official publication of International Association for Dental Traumatology2014eng
OBJECTIVES: The main purpose was to determine the occurrence of pulp necrosis (PN) of teeth retained at the mandibular fracture site. An additional purpose was to investigate whether perioperative use of dexamethasone increases the risk of PN.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A follow-up study on 24 adult dentate patients with mandibular body, symphysis or parasymphysis fracture. These patients had been selected from a larger cohort who had participated in a randomized study of maxillofacial fractures and dexamethasone. All patients who were suspected of having a need for endodontic treatment were evalu

AIM: To discuss the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in the differential diagnosis of a case of labiomandibular paraesthesia caused by extrusion of endodontic sealer into the mandibular canal.
SUMMARY: A 59-year-old woman suffering from a paraesthesia on the left posterior mandible and numbness on the left side of the lower lip was referred to an endodontic specialist 1 month after multiple root canal treatments. A panoramic radiograph revealed the presence of extruded root filling material beyond the apex of the mesial root of the mandibular left second molar and also beyond the a

The periodontal ligament plays a central role in maintening and repairing the dentoalveolar complex. Unlike osseointegration around implants, the periodontal ligament functions as a dynamic, bone-remodelling system in which osteoclastic and osteoblastic processes are continuously coordinated. This enables it to actively maintain and regenerate bone, the periodontal space and soft tissues. Autotransplantation offers a unique clinical situation in which this biological potential is directly harnessed by transferring a vital periodontal ligament to a new location. In a donor tooth with an open ap

AIM: To describe a novel surgical method (crown rotation surgery) to manage inversely impacted central incisors with immature roots.
METHODOLOGY: Two young patients each presented with an inversely impacted maxillary central incisor. To protect the apical tissues, the two impacted incisors were rotated downwards to a relatively normal position without extraction from their bony sockets.
RESULTS: After crown rotation surgery, spontaneous eruption, continuous root development, and periodontal healing of the rotated incisors were observed. The pulp retained vitality and blood flow was normal. M

AIMS: To determine if the cementum on the maxillary right and left first premolars has identical physical properties.
METHODS: Ten normal maxillary first premolar teeth, extracted from five orthodontic patients with a mean age of 14.0 years, were used. The teeth had not been subjected to an orthodontic force. The hardness and elastic modulus of the cementum were measured on the buccal and lingual surfaces of the roots at three locations: cervical third, middle third and apical third.
RESULTS: There were no significant side-to-side differences in cementum hardness (Mean side-to-side differenc

Root fracture injuries affect 0.5-7% of permanent teeth. Although this type of injury is rarely seen in teeth with immature root formation, the prognosis is generally good depending on the site of the fracture. A case report of horizontal root fracture in maxillary central incisor of an 8-year and 3-month-old girl and its treatment was presented.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate possible apical root resorption following orthodontic retraction of the maxillary canine quantitatively and qualitatively.
METHODS: Twenty maxillary canines in 12 patients were retracted using a prefabricated orthodontic spring. Twenty non-treated mandibular canines from the same patients served as controls. Standardized radiographs were taken of all upper and lower canines before (T0) and after (T2) retraction. Root length and tooth length were measured on the radiographs at T0 and T2, and the root length/tooth length ratio was calculated. Ten orthodontists assessed b

The teeth are unique in that they provide a direct pathway for spread of infection into surrounding osseous and soft tissue structures. Periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss worldwide, referring to infection of the supporting structures of the tooth, principally the gingiva, periodontal ligament, cementum, and alveolar bone. Periapical disease refers to an infectious or inflammatory process centered at the root apex of the tooth, usually occurring when deep caries infect the pulp chamber and root canals. We review the pathogenesis, clinical features, and radiographic findi

Despite all the effort by dentists to provide high levels of dental care in clinical practice, there is always the possibility of accidents occurring. This report describes a referred case that presented with irreversible pulpitis in tooth #19. The situation developed after accidental resectioning of the distal root of tooth #19 during the surgical extraction of tooth #18 by another dentist. The resultant open apex in the distal root of tooth #19 was managed conservatively. A positive apical stop was prepared at the root end of the distal root and sterile calcium hydroxide powder was used to c

OBJECTIVE: Over the past 2 decades, several novel materials have been introduced into endodontic practice, specifically designed to be bioactive and biointeractive with apical bone tissues. However, despite their widespread adoption, there remains limited consensus on the biological consequences of accidental apical extrusion, particularly when premixed bioceramic sealers are used. This review aims to analyse both the immediate and long-term effects of apical extrusion of new bioactive root canal sealers compared to traditional bioinert obturation materials.
METHODS: Open search strategy was

Children are uniquely susceptible to craniofacial trauma. Injuries to the teeth occur often as a result of falls and sport activities. The pulp often gets infected after dental trauma resulting in to numerous complications. The authors present a case report of successful restoration of traumatized teeth with open apex which were weakened due to long standing infection and internal resorption. Initially antibiotic combination of 3- mix was used to disinfect the root canals. One tooth is treated with conventional endodontic treatment and the other tooth with open apex and perforation is managed

Autogenous tooth transplantation (ATT) using open-apex donor teeth may preserve pulp vitality, but atraumatic retrieval of impacted third molars is challenging. This case report describes an interdisciplinary workflow combining orthodontic donor activation with digitally guided, vitality-preserving ATT. A 27-year-old woman with an edentulous maxillary left first molar site (tooth #14) underwent ATT using an immature mandibular right third molar (tooth #32) as the donor. After 6 weeks of orthodontic traction, cone-beam computed tomography and intraoral scans were registered for virtual planning

AIM: To evaluate the occurrence of external apical root resorption (EARR) in the incisors after anterior retraction in corrective orthodontic treatment with first premolar extractions and whether it was related with the type of root apex movement and its inclination.
METHOD: The maxillary and mandibular incisors of 22 patients (12 to 25 years of age; 9 males and 13 females) were treated with fixed appliances and premolar extraction. EARR was defined as the difference in root length before and after incisal retraction on periapical radiographs. Distortion of radiographic images and changes due

Lead remains one of the most hazardous metals in our environment. The concentrations of lead in coronal dentine and enamel have previously been reported but limited information is available regarding lead levels in radicular dentine and cementum. This study reports the distribution of lead in 26 roots of 16 human maxillary primary teeth from seven individuals. In addition, calcium and phosphorous concentrations were also measured to detect any variations in the degree of mineralization in different regions of the roots. The mean lead concentration in these roots was 1.67 +/- 1.43 microg/g, whi

The exquisite preservation of maxillary and mandibular fragments of Seymouria has allowed us to examine for the first time in detail the dental anatomy and patterns of development in this stem amniote. The results obtained through histological examination show that Seymouria has pleurodont implantation with ankylosis of the tooth to the labial side of the jawbone. The dentary and maxillary teeth exhibit similar dental characteristics, such as the attachment bone (alveolar bone) and cementum rising above the jawbone on the base of the tooth, and smooth carinae extending lingually toward the too
