Composite resin has become established not only as a material for restoring carious teeth, but also as a means of veneering discoloured or misshapen teeth. This case report describes how composite resin was used to improve the appearance of a tooth which had become unsightly as the result of a combination of gingival recession and attrition. This was done by veneering both the root surface and the cervical area of the crown.

PURPOSE: The etiopathology of noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) is multifactorial and still not fully understood. Tooth wear is defined as loss of dental hard tissue by a chemical or mechanical process that does not involve bacteria. This form of tooth surface loss includes attrition, abrasion, erosion, and abfraction. Noncarious cervical lesions represent loss of tooth structure at the cementoenamel junction. The purpose of this clinical study of NCCL was to analyze the etiology in relation to age and to identify the most important risk factors associated with cervical lesions, as well as pa

Tooth wear occurs during normal mastication. Pathologic wear, including abrasion and erosion, may also take place. Formation of reactionary and reparative dentin and obturation of dentinal tubules are biologic responses that compensate for the loss of tissue. Physical trauma to teeth will affect the blood supply to the pulp. Extensive physical trauma may result in the formation of mineralized, often bonelike tissue in the pulp chamber. Minor trauma, such as that associated with orthodontic tooth movement, may exert transient effects on the pulp or it may result in permanent structural changes.

This study was designed to determine the respective roles of occlusal attrition and subsequent tooth egression, and bacterial plaque accumulation on bone loss (or radicular denudation) during hamster periodontitis. Seventy young male animals were separated into 7 groups. Occlusal attrition was compared on 3 different diets (standard in pellet form, standard in powder form, and Keyes 2000 in powder form), thought to have different abrasiveness. The role of bacterial plaque wad evidenced by inhibiting it with Penicillin V in animals fed the same 3 diets. Compared to animals killed at the beginni

The teeth of five adult captive brown bears (Ursus arctos ssp.) were examined and radiographed for occlusion, loss of teeth, dental plaque and calculus, and attrition under general anesthesia. Deposits of dental calculus were found in various locations with an overall prevalence of 8% to 15% of all tooth surfaces. In all five animals, severe enamel and dentinal attrition defects were observed in canine teeth with exposed pulp. Cage-chewing behavior is probably the main cause for the dental attrition. The composition of the food and feeding management are most likely responsible for the lack of

Kallikrein-related peptidase 4 (KLK4) is a secreted serine protease that degrades residual enamel proteins to facilitate their removal by ameloblasts, which increases mineralization and hardens the enamel. Mutations in human KLK4 cause hypomaturation amelogenesis imperfecta. Enamel formed by Klk4 null mice is normal in thickness and prism structure, but the enamel layer retains proteins, is hypomineralized, and undergoes rapid attrition following tooth eruption. We searched multiple databases, retrieved Klk4 and Klk5 from various mammalian genomes, and identified Klk4 in 46 boreoeutherian geno

Dentin dysplasia type Ⅱ (DD-Ⅱ) is a subtype of hereditary dentin disorders. The dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) gene has been revealed to be the causative gene, whose mutations could affect the normal tooth development process. The lesions involve both deciduous and permanent dentition, mainly manifested as tooth discoloration, attrition and even the subsequent malocclusion. If not treated in time, it will significantly affect the physical and psychological health of patients. The disease is difficult to be diagnosed in clinic accurately as its low incidence and hidden manifestations. The pr

Linear enamel hypoplasia is a developmental disturbance of enamel resulting in clinically visible horizontal defects in enamel that are present on eruption of the tooth. Nondevelopmental lesions of the hard tissues of the tooth, including carious, abrasion, erosion, attrition, and abfraction lesions, require varying amounts of time after tooth eruption to develop. Because linear enamel hypoplasia lesions are present on eruption and are exposed to the factors responsible for abrasion, erosion, and abfraction, nondevelopmental lesions could occur within them in any combination. This report descr

BACKGROUND: The 2003 Children's Dental Health Survey is the fourth of the 10-yearly surveys of children's oral health.
AIM: To report the prevalence of three non-carious tooth conditions in children in the UK.
METHOD: A representative sample of children five, eight, 12 and 15 years of age were examined by calibrated examiners in schools across the UK. The dental examination included accidental damage to incisors, tooth surface loss (TSL) and enamel opacities (age 12 only). A postal questionnaire sought parental and child views on marks on teeth which could not be removed by brushing.

This study presents quantitative data on the rates of anterior tooth wear in a Pleistocene human population. The data were obtained for the hominin sample of the Sima de los Huesos site in Atapuerca, Spain. The fossil record belongs to a minimum of 28 individuals of the same biological population, assigned to the species Homo heidelbergensis. We have estimated the original and the preserved crown height of the mandibular incisors (I1 and I2) of 11 individuals, whose age at death can be ascertained from the mineralization stage and tooth eruption. Results provide a range of 0.276-0.348 and 0.28

A family is reported with dentinal dysplasia type I affecting both dentitions. Presenting features included unusual mobility of the teeth, followed by early exfoliation; normal clinical shape of the crowns of the teeth, but with an amber color without any sign of attrition or abnormal loss of enamel. Radiographic findings showed pulp-chamber and root-canal obliteration, poor root formation, radiolucent linear appearance of the pulp chamber parallel to the cementoenamel junction and frequent periapical radiolucencies. Histological studies have reported large masses of calcified tubular dentin,

OBJECTIVES: Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), particularly neck and low back pain, constitute a major public health issue worldwide with a heavy morbidity and economic impact. However, the relationships between the stomatognathic system and MSDs are subjected to debate, data sorely lacking. The study objective was to investigate the association between bruxism (BR) and MSDs. Secondary objective includes the study of the association between tooth wear (TW) and MSDs.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study on 425 participants frequenting a university dental clinic. The presence of MSDs was eva

Four cases-of congenital dysfunction of the major salivary glands as well as of Prader-Willi, congenital rubella, and Sjögren's syndromes-were identified in a series of 500 patients referred for excessive tooth wear. Although there was evidence of consumption of highly acidic drinks, some occlusal parafunction, and unacceptable toothbrushing habits, salivary dysfunction was the salient factor predisposing a patient to tooth wear in these syndromal cases. The 500 subjects have been characterized either as having medical conditions and medications that predispose them to xerostomia or lifestyles

Intrinsic tooth discoloration may occur as an adverse effect of fluoride and tetracyclines. Extrinsic tooth discoloration may occur as superficial staining or as discoloration of the superficial pellicle and/or biofilm due to chlorhexidine, liquid iron salts, essential oils, some antibiotics and stannous fluoride. Inhibition of orthodontic tooth movement has been reported due to the use of prostaglandin synthetase inhibitors. If medications or over-the-counter drugs induce hyposalivation or contain much sucrose, caries may develop. Erosion may occur if the acidity of medications or over-the-co

The effects of unilateral extraction of the upper incisor (one tooth) on facial growth of young rats were studied. The remaining upper incisor showed deviation towards the opposite side, and there was regular dental wear of all the incisors. The effects were evident only in the mid-facial area. Cephalometric measurements showed significant shortening with deviation of the incisor bone on the extraction side. There was no significant disturbance of the growth of the rest of the maxilla and mandible. These results indicate that upper incisor extractions have a localized influence, leading to imp

The determination of a horse's age by its dentition is a technique that has been employed by horse owners and professionals since at least 600 BC. While aging teeth based on incisor wear patterns is common, wear patterns in the cheek teeth may also be useful. As horses continue to live longer, we routinely examine horses into their 20's and 30's, and it is becoming more common to observe aging changes in the cheek teeth. To our knowledge, this study is the first to use easily obtained clinical observation of the expiration of cheek teeth infundibula to age horses of advanced ages (16 to 35 yea

Skulls from 91 California mountain lions (Puma concolor couguar) were examined macroscopically and radiographically. The majority of the skulls were from young adult animals (57.1%). The skull specimens were from 42 male (46.1%) and 34 female (37.4%) animals, while the gender was unknown for the remainder. The majority (94.5%) of teeth were present for examination. Only 11 teeth were identified as absent congenitally; five of these teeth were maxillary first molar teeth and three were maxillary second premolar teeth. Abnormal tooth morphology was identified in 3.5% of teeth. The most common ab

Diet analysis and advice for patients with tooth wear is potentially the most logical intervention to arrest attrition, erosion and abrasion. It is saliva that protects the teeth against corrosion by the acids which soften enamel and make it susceptible to wear. Thus the lifestyles and diet of patients at risk need to be analysed for sources of acid and reasons for lost salivary protection. Medical conditions which put patients at risk of tooth wear are principally: asthma, bulimia nervosa, caffeine addiction, diabetes mellitus, exercise dehydration, functional depression, gastroesophageal ref
