BACKGROUND: The distribution of lesions from dental erosion due to intrinsic acid regurgitation and vomiting may be different from patterns of dental erosion due to extrinsic acids. To date studies have failed to validate this assumption. This study described the sites and nature of lesions from dental erosion in cases of intrinsic acid regurgitation, and compared them with the distribution of lesions occurring in age and sex matched controls, whose lesions are due to extrinsic acids.
METHODS: The University of Queensland tooth wear clinic patients were screened to select 30 cases, 21 self-id

Third molars are often removed in order to prevent complications and various other problems associated with impacted third molars and their removal. Abortion of mandibular third molars is a procedure carried out at an early age in those subjects where there is insufficient room for the eruption of the third molars. On the other hand one can also decide to remove the second molars and to annexate orthodontically the third molars in the arch.

Tooth wear is becoming more common in both adults and children. The triad of attrition, abrasion and erosion has been known for many years, but the contribution of erosion (irreversible loss of dental hard tissue due to a chemical process not involving bacteria, or the loss of tooth surface not directly associated with mechanical or traumatic factors or caries) to excessive loss of tooth tissue is now being emphasized. The authors of this paper examine the problem and suggest ways of overcoming it.

Non-carious tooth tissue loss due to abrasion, attrition, abfraction and erosion has become a significant problem, occurring in up to 80 percent of children and in up to 43 percent of adults. Dental erosion is now recognised as an important cause of tooth tissue loss in both children and adults. It is caused by the presence of intrinsic or extrinsic acid of non-bacterial origin in the mouth. Intrinsic sources of acid include vomiting, regurgitation, gastro-oesophageal reflux or rumination. Extrinsic sources of acid are most commonly dietary acids. Medications, a patient's lifestyle choices and

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common chronic disease of the gastrointestinal tract and is a problem in developed countries. In particular, clinicians are interested in the extraesophageal manifestations of this disease, and recently, dentists have been studying the erosion of hard dental tissues. This article provides a literature review of scientific papers published over the past 8 years that provide evidence-based experimental and clinical data on the most recent issues related to the prevention of hard dental tissue erosion in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. Dental erosion is characterized by progressively destroyed teeth, which has no relation to bacteria but to chemicals. Some internal factors, such as gastroesophageal reflux induced by bulimia, anorexia, gastrointestinal diseases, or drugs, and external factors, such as diet, drugs, and occupational acid exposure, are considered promotive factors for this disease. This article presents a patient suffering from severe dental erosion in the whole dentition, especially in the maxillary teeth, due to gastroesophageal reflux induced by glucocorticoid therapy for optic neuritis. This article discusse

This study investigated formation of protective deposits on the enamel surface after application of several anti-erosive toothpastes with different active ingredients. NaF-containing Sensodyne Pronamel, SnCl2 /F-based Elmex Erosion Protection and calcium phosphate-based BioRepair Plus Sensitivity Control, SensiShield and Enamel Care toothpastes with claimed anti-erosive properties were tested. Artificial saliva and Elmex Erosion Protection mouth rinse served as control groups. The toothpastes were applied 30 times by a toothbrush for 2 min per day, mouth rinse for 30 s on polished enamel of th

BACKGROUND: Dental erosion manifests as cupped lesions on cusp apices and in fissures of teeth in patients from southeast Queensland referred with excessive tooth wear. When found in young adults, these lesions may indicate early onset of active dental erosion. If the numbers and extent of cupped lesions increase with age, erosion may be a slow cumulative process.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study recorded the presence or absence and the relative sizes of cupped lesions from all cusps and occlusal fissures on premolar and permanent molar teeth from study models by image analysis. Type-speci

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to highlight the usefulness of the clinical examination of the oral cavity for the diagnostic suspicion of anorexia (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), being of main interest to the paediatric dentist and paediatrician due to the early onset of symptoms in Eating Disorders (EDs).
METHOD: A systematic search, applying PICO question, was carried out in biomedical and other electronic databases from 2005 to 2020. Both case reports and case series of patients under 65 years of age with AN and BN were included. Data were extracted and statistically analysed.

In published studies, it has been suggested that dental wear is associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This systematic review was carried out to evaluate the association of GERD, dental erosion, and halitosis and to compare the indices adopted in epidemiological surveys. The Medline database (until October, 2011) was searched systematically to identify studies evaluating the prevalence of oral alterations, such as dental erosion and halitosis, in patients with GERD symptoms. Two reviewers analyzed all reports and the selected studies were evaluated according to the quality of

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this in vitro study was to assess the efficiency of incorporating Biosilicate particles (30 and 50 mg) into an experimental orodispersible film and its efficacy in the remineralization process of bovine dental enamel under cariogenic and erosive challenges.
METHODS: Ninety-nine intact incisors, devoid of cracks or fractures, yielding 198 samples (6 × 6 × 2 mm) via vestibular sectioning using a low-speed diamond disc under water cooling. After flattening the enamel surface with 600, 1200, and 2000 grit sandpaper, the samples were divided into two groups based on th

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of dental erosive wear among five-year-olds in Bergen, Norway, and to investigate associations between background factors and the condition.
METHODS: A total of 387 children received a dental examination in five Public Dental Service clinics in Bergen, Norway. The parents responded to items about the children's dental hygiene and drinking habits, type of beverage container, diet, and other habits, and about their own age, educational level and country of origin. We explored background variables for possible associations with the outcome status as worst af

Both eating disorders and dental erosion are increasingly affecting adolescents and young adults. Thus, our systematic review was designed to answer the question: "Is there a relationship between dental erosion and eating disorders?" Following the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 31 studies were included in this systematic review (according to the PRISMA statement guidelines). Based on the meta-analysis, 54.4% of patients with bulimia nervosa and 26.7% with anorexia nervosa experienced tooth erosion. For the whole group of 1699 patients with eating disorders, erosive lesions were observed in

BACKGROUND: Dental erosion is the loss of dental hard tissues through the acid dissolution of tooth minerals. One of the major factors that cause erosion is the consumption of acidic food and drinks. This study investigated and compared the effect of vitamin waters, herbal beverages, carbonated soft drinks, and fruit juices on the loss of human dental hard tissue.
METHODS: Human tooth samples were immersed in various drinks: vitamin waters, herbal beverages, carbonated soft drinks, and fruit juices. The pH value of each drink was measured using a pH meter. The weight of each sample was determ

Defects near gingiva--a common pathology of dental hard tissue, which adversely affects the health of marginal periodontium. Subgingival tooth cavity is the retention factor for parodontopatogenic microorganisms. Chronic inflammation in the marginal periodontium in response to microbial invasion may lead to local periodontitis (periodontal pocket/gingival recession). Treatment of defects near gingiva should include the removal of the main etiological factors of disease: supraocclusion, bad habits, normalization of individual oral hygiene. Substitution therapy is the defect filling. The most su

It is well known that acid regurgitated from the stomach into the mouth will erode teeth. Conditions such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa, chronic alcoholism and gastric disturbances cause palatal dental erosion. The common factor in these conditions is the role played by the stomach and oesophagus in the acid movement. Acid moving through the lower oesophageal sphincter into the oesophagus is described as gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR). In some patients the acid movement becomes chronic, painful and requires treatment and is termed gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). It is felt by many
