There is a high incidence of tooth injury or loss due to endotracheal intubation or extubation. Tooth injury may be costly or even life threatening. In particular, tooth aspiration may cause airway obstruction, aspiration pneumonitis, or lung collapse, but tooth aspiration after tracheal extubation is rarely reported and easily overlooked. A missing tooth after extubation can be more dangerous. However, there are no practical guidelines and standard intervention strategies to deal with a loose or missing tooth. This article presents the case of a 67-year-old man who underwent laparoscopic cole

Dentoalveolar injuries are an important and common component of craniomaxillofacial trauma. The dentition serves as a vertical buttress of the face and fractures to this area may result in malalignment of facial subunits. Furthermore, the dentition is succedaneous with 3 phases-primary dentition, mixed dentition, and permanent dentition-mandating different treatment protocols. This article is written for nondental providers to diagnose and treat dentoalveolar injuries.

Diagnosis of dental accidents is based on patient history, clinical examination and imaging. A completely avulsed tooth should immediately be reimplanted, and a dislodged tooth urgently repositioned to the original position. Avulsed primary teeth will never be reimplanted, and primary teeth of children under three years are not repositioned. Furthermore, fractures of the alveolar process and various soft tissue injuries but not dental fractures require urgent treatment. All dental accident patients should be referred to dental consultation for further examinations and treatment.

Traumatic dental injury can result in avulsion of anterior teeth. In young patients, it is a challenge to the dental professional because after replantation, late complications such as ankylosis require tooth extraction. Although prosthetic and orthodontic treatment, and implant placement have been described as the options for intervention, autogenous tooth transplantation could be an effective procedure in growing patients if there is a suitable donor tooth available. This case presents the treatment of a patient who suffered a traumatic injury at 9 years old with avulsion of tooth 21, which

Eph receptors belong to a subfamily of receptor tyrosine kinases that are activated by membrane-spanning ligands called ephrins. Previously, we demonstrated that the ephrinB1-EphB2 interaction regulates odontogenic/osteogenic differentiation from dental pulp cells (DPCs) in vitro. The goal of this study was to identify the molecular mechanisms regulated by the EphB2/ephrinB1 system that govern tertiary dentin formation in vitro and in vivo. During tooth development, ephrinB1, and EphB2 were expressed in preodontoblast and odontoblasts at postnatal day 4. EphrinB1 was continuously expressed in

Traumatic intrusion is a luxation type of injury where the tooth is displaced along the axis of the tooth, into the alveolus. This injury is regarded as serious because of the tissue damage that it causes. The traumatic movement is associated with severe damage to the periodontal ligament, pulpal tissue, root and alveolar socket. Despite its severity, the rare occurrence of this injury in permanent teeth has resulted in limited studies of immature and mature permanent incisors. The purpose of this paper is to review this luxation injury of permanent immature incisors, and to describe its diagn

Tooth exarticulation or avulsion refers to the complete displacement of the tooth out of its socket. It is a complex injury, requiring immediate intervention for optimal results. Literature indicates that prolonged dry time and improper handling may be associated with increased risk of failure. Immediate replantation of the tooth allows for immediate restoration of esthetics and phonetics. This case report presents the management of an avulsed mature tooth in a young boy, with a two-year follow-up, which had been preserved in milk after around 15-20 minutes of injury and transplanted after two

Injury to the permanent central incisors due to trauma in the maxillofacial region, though common, may result in an uncommon sequel. We report a case of traumatic injury in a 5-year-old child with displacement of the tooth bud into the nasal floor. The identification of ectopic tooth buds poses little diagnostic challenge due to the available imaging facilities, however, in the present case the ectopic bud remained unnoticed and resulted in ectopic eruption of the tooth in the nasal cavity 1 year later. This report highlights a rare case of nasal eruption of a permanent tooth and places stress

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate tooth-bearing alveolar segment salvage after maxillofacial trauma and identify surgical-pathway determinants of late infective-inflammatory segment failure that can be addressed during acute facial fracture care.
METHODS: A tooth-unit cohort nested within 246 patients treated from January 2021 to March 2026 for maxillofacial injury was analyzed from the perspective of facial trauma triage, tooth-bearing alveolar segment stabilization, and postoperative surveillance. Candidate determinants included delay to definitive segment stabilization, mature root apex, alveolar fra

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to identify the incidence of oral, jaw, and neck injury secondary to endotracheal intubation in young children.
METHODS: This prospective observational study was conducted in the pediatric intensive care unit at a level 1 trauma center. From October 1998 to January 1999 and November 2007 to April 2008, all intubated patients younger than 3 years with no prior oral procedures were examined within 24 hours of intubation. A standardized form was used to record injuries. Separately, medical records were reviewed for prior injuries. Chi-square/Fisher exa

The aims of the study were to determine the main aetiological factors involved in injuries to anterior teeth and to identify factors influencing the attendance for emergency care. This information is essential, first, for planning dental health education programmes aimed at reducing the incidence of dental trauma and, second, to devise strategies for its effective treatment. Of 2022 schoolchildren examined for evidence of dental trauma, 696 (34%) had experienced injury and were interviewed regarding this injury. Of these, 403 knew about their damaged front tooth, but only 330 recollected the i

Tooth resorption is a common sequela following injuries to or irritation of the periodontal ligament and/or tooth pulp. The course of tooth resorption involves an elaborate interaction among inflammatory cells, resorbing cells, and hard tissue structures. The key cells involved in resorption are of the classic type, which include osteoblasts and odontoclasts. Types of tooth resorption include internal resorption and external resorption. There are two types of internal resorption: root canal (internal) replacement resorption and internal inflammatory resorption. External resorption can be class

Trigeminal neuropathy secondary to orthodontic tooth movement is reported as a rare occurrence. Risk assessment is possible to prevent or immediately treat these injuries and clinicians should be aware of the risk factors. Increasingly, orthodontics is provided by non-specialists and orthodontic therapists. This paper presents cases and a review of orthodontic-related nerve injuries, where early diagnosis of orthodontic nerve injuries was misdiagnosed, preventing early or immediate treatment that would have likely optimised neural recovery and prevented permanent sensory neuropathic pain in th

Facial bone and especially mandibular fractures are injuries in which first aid and management of late complications require dental professionals, and consequently all dentists should be familiar with the modern principles of their treatment. Tooth involvement is common in mandibular and maxillary fractures and can require more treatment than does the jaw fracture. Nonsurgical treatment of bone fractures involves immobilization, which for the facial bones is achieved with maxillomandibular fixation (MMF) using dental fixed arch bars. Hence, associated tooth injuries are difficult or impossible

Of the six recognized types of tooth luxation injuries, intrusion generally carries the most guarded long-term prognosis due to the high risk of complications, including root resorption, ankylosis, marginal bone loss, and pulp canal obliteration or necrosis. The degree of traumatic intrusion and stage of root development affects the outcome and treatment planning. This report describes the clinical history, oral and radiographic examination findings, and rationale for surgical extraction in 2 dogs and 1 cat with traumatic intrusion of a maxillary canine tooth.

Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) are injuries affecting the teeth, periodontium, and surrounding soft tissues. A significant percentage of candidates for orthodontic treatment suffer from previous TDIs to their permanent incisors that mostly remained untreated. Orthodontic treatment of such teeth might be associated with an increased risk of further pulpal and periodontal consequences, especially in teeth with a previous onset of root resorption that has occurred following the trauma. Orthodontic treatment planning can also be challenging for previously endodontically treated teeth. Clinicians

Dental intrusions are a severe type of injury because they impact the neurovascular supply of the tooth as well as the supporting tissues which predispose the tooth to necrosis and root resorption. Management of these injuries requires repositioning of the teeth under close monitoring to avoid complications. The management becomes more comprehensive when an intrusion is combined with other injuries, such as a crown-root fracture. This case report represents a 4-year follow-up of a child who suffered from a concomitant injury of intrusion and complicated crown-root fracture to the maxillary imm

Studies have shown that some children and adolescents are affected only once with dental trauma, while others seem to be accident-prone and suffer from multiple dental trauma episodes. Less is known about treatment consequences related to repeated traumatic dental injuries to the same tooth and treatment guidelines are not well established. Complicated crown fractures and crown-root fractures pose difficulties for dentists to establish adequate treatment plans because these fractures require multidisciplinary knowledge and approach for a correct case planning and prognosis. The objective of th

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders. Seizures that occur during attacks may lead to head injuries. It is crucial to establish proper prophylactic management against trauma occurrence, as nowadays prevention is not sufficient.
AIM: Assessment of the frequency of head and intraoral trauma during epileptic seizures and to evaluate factors that may predispose to injuries.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The questionnaire was carried out among 106 patients with epilepsy. Survey conducted questions regarding development of the disease and occurrence of orodental and head
