BACKGROUND: The link between tooth loss and cognitive impairment has become increasingly significant. Recent findings suggest that mitochondrial alteration in hippocampal neurons may mediate this relationship.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the mediating role of mitochondria in the relationship between tooth loss and cognitive function in Wistar rats.
METHOD: Male Wistar rats (n = 20, 12 weeks old) were randomly divided into tooth extraction (TE) and sham groups. The model was established through upper molar extraction and sham operation respectively. Cognitive evaluations were perfo

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases are a significant global public health challenge. Current evidence indicates that several chronic conditions are individually associated with tooth loss. People are living with more than one chronic condition, known as multimorbidity (MM). Considering the common risk factors for oral and chronic diseases, this study aimed to evaluate the association between MM and tooth loss in the Chilean population.
METHODS: Cross-sectional study with secondary data from the latest Chilean National Health Survey (ENS 2016-17). The number of remaining teeth was classified into four

BACKGROUND: Denture use may contribute to maintaining cognitive function by addressing the masticatory difficulties caused by tooth loss. However, reports on the association between tooth loss and cognitive impairment have been inconsistent. The impact of changes in tooth number and denture use on the development of cognitive impairment in older adults remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate these impacts among community-dwelling older adults.
METHODS: This 7-year longitudinal prospective cohort study included 64 520 community-dwelling Taiwanese older adults aged ≥65 years without cogni

In population-based longitudinal studies, bias caused by nonresponse among eligible participants and attrition during follow-up thwarts conclusions. As this issue is not commonly addressed in dental studies, it is the aim of this study to examine the consequences of attrition with respect to tooth loss and mortality in a 10-y follow-up study. From the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-0), a biological age (BA) score was constructed from 10 systemic biomarkers and related to one's actual chronological age (CA). The 3,417 dentate participants were stratified according to their BA-CA scores into

DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the risk and variables of tooth loss for teeth adjacent to dental implants compared to teeth nonadjacent to implants. The study followed the STROBE guidelines and was approved by the Institutional Review Board.
COHORT SELECTION: The study included patients treated with dental implants at UCSF School of Dentistry between 2000 and 2020. The inclusion criteria for teeth adjacent to implants required the implant to support a fixed prosthesis and a follow-up period of at least 12 months. Nonadjacent teeth also required a follow-up period

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to observe the dental condition in a group of elderly patients over a period of 10 years in order to clarify important risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants were elderly patients (in their eighties) who took panoramic radiographs between 2015 and 2016, and for whom panoramic radiographs taken around 10 year earlier were also available. The number of remaining and lost teeth, the Eichner Index, the presence or absence of molar occlusion, the respective condition of dental pulp, dental crowns, alveolar bone resorption, as well as periapical lesi

With high numbers of unidentified skeletonised remains recovered annually in South Africa and an increased number of edentate individuals being reported, the question arises as to whether tooth loss would result in craniofacial changes which might alter the accuracy of osteological analyses. Forty-five fixed landmarks together with sliding semilandmarks were collected from 229 white South African crania and were used to capture curve data pertaining to the basicranium, alveoli, zygomatic arches, nasal aperture and orbits. Geometric morphometric methods were employed to assess the effects of to

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Tooth loss (TL), one of the most visible results of the evolution of periodontitis, causes physiological and psychological impacts on a patient's life. This prospective study aimed to evaluate the incidence, underlying reasons and influence of risk predictors for the occurrence of TL in a program of periodontal maintenance therapy (PMT) over 5 years.
METHODS: The sample comprised 212 individuals diagnosed with chronic moderate-severe periodontitis, who had finished active periodontal treatment, were incorporated in a PMT program. Individuals were divided in to two gr

AIM: The aim of this study was to identify the causes and patterns of tooth loss among Nigerian adults.
BACKGROUND: Tooth loss continues to be a major problem in clinical dentistry and has received significant attention in everyday dental practice. In Nigeria there is a discernible lack of current data that would explain the reasons and patterns of tooth loss from its different geopolitical zones.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: The reasons for tooth extractions during a period of 12 months were obtained from the hospital records of teaching and specialist hospitals in Nigeria's six geopolitical zone

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Males carry a disproportionate burden of cardiovascular disease. Because males also bear a higher burden of periodontal disease, we investigated the existence of gender differences in the postulated relationship between periodontal infections, tooth loss, and subclinical atherosclerosis.
METHODS: A total of 1710 randomly enrolled participants between the ages of 45 and 75 with no history of myocardial infarction or stroke received a clinical periodontal examination, carotid scan using high-resolution B-mode ultrasound, and extensive measurements for conventional cardio

Diets high in fermentable carbohydrates are known to be highly cariogenic, particularly when contained in very sticky food such as dates. This medium allows food to remain in contact with the teeth, thereby resisting the normal flushing action of the saliva. When comprising a large portion of the diet, food such as this can lead to high caries incidence and accelerated tooth loss. This appears to be the situation found in a skeletal series from the late Iron Age in the Sultanate of Oman (100 BC-AD 893). Dental remains from 37 individuals were used in this study. Antemortem tooth loss (AMTL), c

This study describes the incidence of tooth loss over a 10-year period in a population of rural Chinese, initially aged between 20 and 80 years. Among the 587 persons who participated in a baseline examination in 1984, 440 persons were available for a follow-up study in 1994. A total of 31 persons, mainly aged 50+ years at baseline, had become completely edentulous. Between 45% and 96% of the persons lost at least one tooth, and the average number of teeth lost ranged between 1.0 and 7.2. The distribution of the number of teeth lost was skew, indicating that a minor group of subjects had a sub

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impacts of diabetes and smoking on the risk of tooth loss in adults and the elderly. Dental receipts and specific health checkup data were used to assess increase in tooth extraction among people with a high blood glucose level or a smoking habit. The data were obtained from a database maintained by DeSC Healthcare Corporation, which supports the integrity of data held by health insurers. Dental receipts and specific health checkup data from 2018 to 2021 were used to obtain information on fasting blood glucose levels, smoking habits, and tooth e

OBJECTIVE: Periodontal disease is caused by subgingival bacteria that adversely affect the host immune system and create and maintain unmitigated inflammation in gingival and periodontal tissues. The condition is also linked to systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Periodontitis elevates the bacterial load and spreads systemic inflammation through infection and inflammation. The main radiographic sign of periodontitis is marginal bone loss. Risk factors, including medications, smoking, age, and sex, are known to influence periodontal health. However, th
