The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of pathologic migration of anterior teeth in patients with moderate to severe periodontitis. The correlation between pathologic migration of anterior teeth and attachment loss (AL) was investigated, and an attempt was made to identify the most common early form of pathologic migration. Prevalence of tooth migration was studied in a group of 343 patients with moderate to severe periodontitis before treatment. The presence of pathologic migration was determined from the chief complaint and patient awareness o tooth movement in the last 5

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of vibration frequency of a deciduous tooth due to physiological root resorption. The author developed an analysis system for tooth vibration by applying an impact-hammer to the tooth. Peak frequency (Hz) of the tooth stimulated by the impact-hammer was observed by the analysis system. The following results were obtained: 1) Peak frequency of the tooth vibration shifted to a lower range according to the root resorption both in vitro (simulation model) and in vivo (15 children) and a high positive correlation was found between the peak fr

BACKGROUND: There have been passing references in history that excessive occlusal forces might be a causative factor in gingival recession. The purpose of the present cross-sectional study was to explore the role of trauma from occlusion on the development of gingival recession.
METHODS: Three hundred patients reporting to the department of Periodontics were screened for the presence of gingival recession in the lower incisors. A single trained examiner carried out clinical examination for signs of trauma from occlusion, such as fremitus test, presence of wear facets and mobility. The data we

The aim of this study is to report a rare case of bilateral cemental tear in a completely calcified tooth with successful dental management. A 60-year-old male reported with pain in the upper right central incisor. Radiographic examination revealed complete calcific obliteration of the root canal, inflammatory root resorption of apical third, and bilateral cemental tear and traumatic occlusion. Tooth mobility was within physiologic limits and 3-mm probing depth. Endodontic treatment of the tooth was carried out with intracanal calcium hydroxide therapy. The tooth was relieved of traumatic occl

The aims of the present study were to analyze (i) which tissue changes may occur in the zone of co-destruction to better understand why trauma from occlusion may induce additional attachment loss, and (ii) whether changes occur in the periodontal ligament tissue when an inflammatory lesion (ICT) approaches the periodontal ligament space. 16, 1-year-old beagle dogs, were selected and divided into 2 groups, group A and group B, consisting of 6 and 10 dogs, respectively. In group A, on day 0, a bucco-lingual jiggling type movement was induced resulting in increasing tooth mobility at P3 (test too

Bruxism is one of the most prevalent, complex, and destructive dental functional disorders. It is difficult to identify, especially in its early stages, because most patients are unaware of the habit. Although many factors contribute to the etiology of the disorder, there is little valid and reliable clinical research to assure a correct diagnosis. The effects of bruxism are multiple and diverse and include temporomandibular joint pain and dysfunction, head and neck pain, tooth wear, mobility, erosion, abrasion, loss of and damage to supporting structures, muscle pain and spasm, disturbance of

BACKGROUND: Crown-root and cervical root fractures constitute a restorative challenge due to sub-gingival position of the fracture margin. Surgical tooth extrusion is one of the treatment options. There is uncertainty regarding the prognosis of such treatment modality.
OBJECTIVE: To assess adverse events of surgical tooth extrusion in the treatment for crown-root and cervical root fractures in permanent teeth.
METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched through 15th of June 2012. Search was limited to English and Arabic languages. Reference list of relevant studies were hand-se

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a progressive, painful disease, affecting incisors, canines, and cheek teeth. Examination findings include gingival inflammation, gingival recession and/or hyperplasia, subgingival swelling, bulbous enlargement of teeth, associated periodontal disease, pathologic tooth fracture, and/or tooth mobility and loss. Current hypotheses include biomechanical stresses and secondary bacterial involvement. Early recognition allows case management, but it is a progressive disease. Owner education is crucial; horses with complete or multi

Osteosarcoma of the jaws accounts for 6-13% of all osteosarcomata. If not diagnosed early, it spreads extensively through the jaw and contiguous soft tissues into the nasal cavity, the maxillary sinus, the orbit and the infratemporal fossa, and may invade the oral soft tissues. A clinical finding of tooth displacement and tooth mobility associated with radiolucency/radiopacity should alert the practitioner to the possibility of osteosarcoma or some other malignancy.

A case of multiple idiopathic apical root resorption in a 26-yr-old female patient is presented. A review of the literature revealed that extensive idiopathic root resorption is unusual. Neither local nor systemic etiological factors were found in our case. Examination of parents and siblings did not reveal a familiar tendency. Radiographs and clinical evaluation showed a very poor prognosis for most of the teeth present in the mouth of our patient.

An orthodontic magnetic extrusion technique is described for the management of an extensively damaged maxillary premolar. A cylindrical neodymium-iron-boron (Nd2Fe14B) magnet was attached to the remaining tooth structure, and a second magnet was placed on a resin-bonded partial denture. A 4.5-mm extrusion was obtained after 3 adjustments, and the tooth was prepared with a 3-mm buccal and 2-mm lingual ferrule by following a biologically oriented preparation technique and restored with a monolithic zirconia crown. Eighteen months after completing the treatment, no evidence of soft tissue dehisce

C-shaped roots with radicular grooves are uncommon in mandibular premolars. Bacteria residing in the radicular groove and associated accessory canals can contribute to persistent periradicular infections. Eradicating bacteria in these less accessible areas remains a significant challenge in endodontic procedures. This report describes the successful management of a left mandibular second premolar (#20) with a persistent lesion related to a lingual radicular groove through an intentional replantation procedure. A 31-year-old Chinese male complained of a gum swelling related to tooth #20 which w

The therapy of dilacerated permanent anterior teeth usually involves surgically removing the tooth. Subsequently, orthodontic methods for closing the space or keeping it open are preferred until the patient reaches an age when definitive implantological or prosthetic treatments may be used. Anterior tooth transplantation should be considered as an alternative to surgically extracting the tooth. This study describes a period of investigation covering 3 years during which neither replacement resorption nor inflammatory resorption was diagnosed in the five transplanted teeth. The clinical tooth m

Natal teeth are those present in the oral cavity at the child's birth. These teeth can cause ulcers on the ventral surface of the tongue, lip, and the mother's breast characterizing the Riga-Fede Disease. The treatment depends on the tooth's mobility and the risk of aspiration or swallowing; whether it is supernumerary or regular primary teeth; whether it is causing interference in breastfeeding; breast and oral soft tissue injuries; and the general state of child's health. A 1-month-old female infant was diagnosed with two natal teeth and an ulcerated lesion on the ventral surface of the tong

In the pathogenesis of chronic periodontitis, there are general systemic factors which play a major role, such as osteoporosis, with menopause as the most common etiological factor, and other pathological determining conditions for osteoporosis as well (ovary, thyroid and malignant tumors). The aim of the present study was to assess the correlations between periodontal indices and osteoporosis. The study was performed on 35 patients with periodontal disease aged between 45 and 79 years. These patients were divided into two groups: a study group with osteoporosis and periodontal disease (n=25)

Tooth autotransplantation is a procedure which provides the extraction of an erupted or impacted tooth and its repositioning to another site in the oral cavity. This Case Report describes a successful case of two autotransplantations of open-apex mandibular third molars in place of the hopeless first mandibular molars with the use of L-PRF in a growing patient. A 15-year-old male patient was referred to the Dental Clinic for the extractions of the two hopeless mandibular first molars. Autotransplantation was considered the best treatment option for both sites 36 and 46, because the presence of

Marginal and periapical periodontal diseases cause massive destruction of tooth tissues and surrounding tissues, such as alveolar bone and maxillary sinus floor, visible on radiographs. Lesions involving the apical and marginal periodontium are endo-perio (EPL) lesions. This study aimed to compare the treatment efficacy of endo-perio lesions using a standard treatment protocol and a standard diode laser-assisted treatment protocol. The 12 patients were divided into the study (a) and control (b) group. Periodontal indices, tooth vitality and mobility, occlusal status, and radiographic diagnosis

BACKGROUND: Reports of post herpetic maxillofacial complications have been very rarely documented in the literature that includes periapical lesions, calcified and devitalized pulps, resorption of roots, osteonecrosis, and spontaneous exfoliation of teeth. The atypical feature of the case of concern to the dental surgeon is the rare complication of spontaneous tooth exfoliation following herpes zoster.
CASE REPORT: This case reports a male patient of age 47 years who reported to the Department of Periodontology with the chief complaint of mobility in the left upper central incisor. Patient hi
