Root resorption is a common side effect of orthodontic treatment. In the current study, lithium chloride (LiCl), a Wnt signaling activator, was examined to determine its effect on root resorption. In total, 10 Sprague Dawley rats were randomly allocated into the experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). Each group consisted of five subjects. By using closed nickel-titanium coil springs, a 50-g force was applied between the upper incisors and the maxillary right first molars in order to mimic orthodontic biomechanics in the EG and CG for 14 days. During the 14 days, the EG rats were gavag

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term effect of fangchinoline, an antiinflammatory drug widely used in Asia, on root resorption that is associated with orthodontic tooth movement.
METHODS: Twenty-four Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 groups. Mesial forces of 0, 50, or 100 g were applied to the maxillary first molar of the rats in each group for 14 days by activating nickel-titanium closed-coil springs. One-half of the rats receiving each of these treatments also received injections of 200 µL fangchinoline every 2 days. Finally, movement of the maxillary first molars was measured using

A various amount of alveolar ridge resorption is likely to occur after tooth extraction, making it difficult to restore the missing teeth with either endosseous dental implants or prosthodontics approaches. It is commonly thought that the bone resorption is due to the absence of the mechanical stimulation from the occlusal force. However, regulation of the bone mass is a complex homeostatic system involved in hormonal, paracrine/autocrine, mechanical and neuronal nature. Studies have shown that the central and peripheral nervous system play an important role in bone remodeling. The hypothalamu

INTRODUCTION: The tension-compression theory of bone mechanotransduction is ubiquitous in orthodontics. However, partly due to deficiencies in the characterization of the mechanical environment, there is no consensus on the mechanisms that link stimuli to root resorption and bone response. In this study, we analyzed the predominant directions of tension and compression in the alveolar structures.
METHODS: An idealized tooth model was constructed with computer-aided design for finite element stress analysis. The principal stress magnitudes and directions were calculated in tipping and translat

Cathepsin K is a cysteine proteinase, which is abundantly and selectively expressed in osteoclasts. It is believed to play an important role in the proteolysis of bone resorption by osteoclasts. The objectives of this study were to investigate the association of cathepsin K in the physiological root resorption of deciduous teeth and to identify the cathepsin K-producing cells in deciduous root resorption. RT-PCR and Northern blot analysis of the total RNAs extracted from bovine active and resting root-resorbing tissues, which lie between the root of deciduous tooth and its permanent successor,

Pregnancy epulis is a common and benign vascular tumor that reaches 5% of pregnant women; it respects adjacent structures, such as bone, teeth, and sinus mucosa. This paper reports a rare case of extensive pregnancy epulis with alveolar bone lysis, tooth displacement, and sinusal floor lysis. A 23-year-old pregnant woman with 23 weeks of amenorrhea was referred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with a large maxillary mass and spontaneous bleeding, causing difficulty in speaking and swallowing. Due to the rapid development, the stage of pregnancy, and the need for a sure diagn

Tooth roots embedded in the alveolar bone do not typically undergo resorption while the bone continues remodeling in its physiological state. In this study, we analyzed genetically modified mice with the functional inactivation of nucleotide pyrophosphatase 1 (Npp1), encoded by ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase 1 (Enpp1). This mutation leads to the formation of ectopic cervical cementum vulnerable to external tooth root resorption. Cementoblasts with the inactivation of Enpp1 extensively expressed non-collagenous matrix proteins enriched with bone sialoprotein (Bsp), dentin matr

BACKGROUND/AIM: Replantation of avulsed teeth may lead to root resorption. Bisphosphonates (BPs), a class of drugs of used to treat resorptive diseases of the bone such as osteoporosis and Paget's disease, have been observed to exert an antiresorptive effect on periodontal bone as well. The antiresorptive properties of BPs could prove them useful in preventing root resorption of replanted avulsed teeth. The aim of this systematic review was to analyze and summarize the currently available literature concerning the use of BPs in preventing root resorption of avulsed teeth.

Some degree of external root resorption is a frequent, unpredictable, and unavoidable consequence of orthodontic tooth movement mediated by odontoclasts/cementoclasts originating from circulating precursor cells in the periodontal ligament. Its pathogenesis involves mechanical forces initiating complex interactions between signalling pathways activated by various biological agents. Resorption of cementum is regulated by mechanisms similar to those controlling osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption. Following root resorption there is repair by cellular cementum, but factors mediating the transi

OBJECTIVES: Interleukin-4 (IL-4) is a recognized immunomodulatory cytokine that regulates bone homeostasis. However, the influence of IL-4 on orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) and subsequent root resorption is still unknown. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of IL-4 on tooth movement and its associated root resorption in a mouse model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The maxillary first molars of four male mice for each experimental group were subjected to mesial force by a nickel titanium coil spring for 12 days. Control mice were not given appliances and injections. V

Root resorption is an adverse outcome of orthodontic tooth movement. However, there have been no available approaches for the protection and repair of root resorption. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) on root resorption during experimental tooth movement and the effects of LIPUS in the RANKL/OPG mechanism in osteoblasts and cementoblasts in vitro. Twenty four Wistar strain male rats of 12-week-old were used in this study. The upper first molars were subjected to experimental movement in the mesial direction for 1-3weeks. Through the e

Intrusive luxation is one of the most severe types of dental trauma. The risk of development of inflammatory or replacement root resorption is high if not timely managed. Endodontic intervention is required soon after the occurrence of trauma, in an attempt to prevent or delay inflammatory root resorption. This case report emphasized timely referral for endodontic management of intruded tooth to prevent inflammatory root resorption.

The purpose of this study was to assess the rate of root resorption in relation to different magnitudes of continuous force during experimental tooth movement using nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy wire. Four force magnitudes of 0.8, 1.6, 4, and 8 g were applied to the upper first molars of 75 male Wistar rats (300-320 g, 10-week-old) for 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days and compared with a control group without an orthodontic appliance. Light microscopic images of the compressed periodontal ligament (PDL) were processed by computer, and the ratio of the root resorption lacuna length to root surface leng

Matrix metalloproteinases are involved in the regulation of bone remodeling. The hypothesis that matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors may be useful for experimentally limiting orthodontic tooth movement, a process involving perturbations of normal bone remodeling, was tested. General matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors limited the resorption of bone slices by mouse marrow cultures stimulated by calcitriol, parathyroid hormone, and basic-fibroblast growth factor. Pre-coating dentin slices with short arginine-glycine aspartic acid (RGD) peptides, but not arginine-glycine-glutamic acid (RGE) contr

Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) has been described as a bone remodeling process mediated by the expression of various inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). Necroptosis is a form of regulated cell death that is mainly induced by TNF-α, leading to the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that cause inflammation. However, the role of osteocyte necroptosis in regulating osteoclastogenesis during OTM remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of osteocyte necroptosis on osteoclastogenesis in a mouse model of OTM. In wild-type mice, osteocyte

Our understanding of the initiation and cellular mechanisms underlying endochondral resorption of Meckel's cartilage (MC) remains limited. Several studies have shown that the resorption site of MC and the mandibular incisor tooth germ are located close to each other. However, whether incisor tooth germ development is involved in MC resorption remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to elucidate the spatio-temporal interaction between the initiation site of MC resorption and the development of incisor tooth germs in an embryonic mouse model. To this effect, we developed a histology-based three
