Oral health is vital to overall wellness, yet toothbrushes can harbor harmful microorganisms, especially in compromised individuals. Contamination occurs when microbes survive on surfaces such as "toilet plume" where bio-aerosols are released during flushing. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the microbial contamination of toothbrushes with and without lids, stored in different environments over a period of two months. Hence, we used data from equal student groups who used toothbrushes stored inside or outside bathrooms for this study. Samples from 36 used brushes were tested for Candida

Objectives Intracranial penetration by foreign bodies entering via the orbit represent an unusual form of traumatic brain injury. Nevertheless, much is at stake with high risk for cranial nerve and neurovascular injury. We present a case where the bristled end of a toothbrush entered the brain as a projectile via the superior orbital fissure and discuss considerations for surgical management. Setting A 35-year-old woman suffered a periorbital injury after her husband threw an electric toothbrush at a wall and the head of the toothbrush became a missile that projected through her superior orbit

A cross-functional team was assembled to take on the project of developing a toothbrush that could deliver a "whole mouth clean." As such, this brush needed to not only demonstrate superior plaque removal from teeth, it also needed to provide a means for safe cleaning of soft oral tissues. During use, the brush needed to be comfortable both in hand and in mouth, and it required contemporary esthetics to help drive consumer acceptance. This article will take the reader through the full development cycle of the new toothbrush, identifying the proposed benefit of each brush feature along the way.

AIM: This study aimed to assess the online advice and information about toothbrushing provided by professional dental care associations (PDCAs) in English-speaking countries.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: PDCAs are national organisations of dentists and dental hygienists. A cross-sectional internet search for information published until July 2021 was performed. First, it was assessed whether there was a PDCA in English-speaking countries. A distinction was made between dentist associations (DAs) and dental hygienist associations (DHAs). In case a website was available, it was assessed whether toothbr

DESIGN: The Brushing RemInder 4 Good oral HealTh (BRIGHT) multi-centre randomized controlled trial was based in state-funded secondary schools in England, Wales and Scotland. It had two arms, aiming to assess the clinical and cost effectiveness of a 50 min education session and twice daily brush reminder text messages on toothbrushing and caries rates, compared to the normal education curriculum and no SMS. Outcomes were assessed at intervals over 2.5 years and were assessor-blinded.
CASE SELECTION: Pupils aged 11-13 were recruited from participating schools, and in each school randomised via

OBJECTIVES: The objective was to better understand why toothbrushing often fails to achieve the desired state of plaque-free dentition, by systematically analyzing toothbrushing behavior in four age groups (12-year-olds, 20-year-olds, 35- to 44-year-olds, 65- to 74-year-olds).
METHOD AND MATERIALS: Analyzable video recordings of toothbrushing, as well as plaque scores assessed immediately after brushing, were available from 1,941 participants of the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6). All videos were analyzed in terms of tooth contact time (TCT), use of interdental cleaning aids, and type

BACKGROUND: Dental caries in preschool children remains a major dental public health problem and affects significant numbers of children in developed and developing countries. The incidence is increasing in developing countries, such as Sudan, because of lifestyle changes, absence of oral health-preventive services and inadequate access to oral health care.
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the prevalence of dental caries and toothbrushing habits among 3- to 5-year-old preschool children in Khartoum State, Sudan, and described the correlation between the mean decayed, missing and filled tooth (

OBJECTIVES: To assess the relationship between parental and family factors and children's toothbrushing frequency at different times of day.
METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire survey of predominantly low-socio-economic status parents of children aged 3-6 years (n = 296) in South Wales, UK. Data were collected on the child's weekly toothbrushing frequency (morning and evening), the parents' rationale for brushing their child's teeth in the morning and evening, the strength of a parent's habit for brushing a child's teeth in the morning and evening, and the extent to which the family's da

INTRODUCTION: Regular toothbrushing (TB) has been shown to be related with better oral health. Studies have shown that various sociodemographic and clinical factors were related with regular TB in general population with normal renal function. However, no study had analyzed the factors related with regular TB in hemodialysis (HD) patients.
METHODS: The laboratory parameters, depressive symptoms, health-related quality of life, sleep quality, and cognitive function were measured for all patients. Self-reported TB frequency was determined from all patients.
RESULTS: The frequency of patients T

This study examined the effect of follow-up intervention on periodontal health of workers on the basis of clinical assessment and a laboratory test. Toothbrushing instruction was given to 26 workers (41.4 +/- 7.8 yr of age). In the experimental group (EG), 13 workers received re-instruction and reminder messages after the initial intervention. The remaining 13 workers, who served as a control group (CG), underwent no follow-up. Brushing skill was assessed on the basis of plaque scores for the whole mouth (Plaque Control Record, PCR) and for eight representative teeth (Plaque Index, PLI). Perio

We describe a case of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelet count (HELLP syndrome) at 38 weeks' gestation. This condition was diagnosed when the patient presented with acute, persistent gum bleeding after toothbrushing. Her platelet count was 26,000/mm3. Bleeding gums have rarely led to the diagnosis of this syndrome; this case appears to be the most severe description of this clinical presentation following toothbrushing yet presented in the literature. Although the patient had been hospitalized 48 hours earlier with nonspecific viral-like symptoms, she was discharged after being

BACKGROUND: Oral hygiene is a crucial aspect of children's healthcare, and the effectiveness of plaque removal is one of the key indicators of good oral health. Traditional toothpaste and toothbrushes have been the cornerstone of oral hygiene practices; however, recent innovations like chewable toothpaste tablets offer a promising alternative. This study aims to compare the plaque removal efficacy and acceptance of a chewable toothpaste tablet with conventional toothpaste using both conventional and powered toothbrushes in children aged 8-12 years. By investigating the effectiveness, acceptabi

Background Contaminated toothbrushes can cause several oral and systemic illnesses. This study aimed to identify the most rapid, effective, and affordable method for toothbrush decontamination. In addition, the most prevalent bacterial species colonizing toothbrushes were determined. Methodology Toothbrushes were collected after two weeks of use by 55 volunteers. The bacterial count was measured before and after sterilization using 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate, 0.1% Listerine, 70% white alcohol, 10% povidone-iodine, 1% sodium hypochlorite, 2% glutaraldehyde, ultraviolet radiation, microwave ir

Toothbrushes are the most common cause of foreign body injury to the oral cavity in children, but complete impalement by a toothbrush is an extremely rare occurrence and has not been reported previously. This report describes a 28-month-old girl who fell from a 1m ledge while brushing her teeth. Her toothbrush penetrated the oral cavity and could not be removed, and so she was rushed to the hospital with the toothbrush in place. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed penetration of the toothbrush from the oral cavity into and through the right posterior neck at the level of the bifurcati

The act of brushing teeth induces salivary secretion. However, there is no evidence to show which particular regions of the teeth and oral cavity in brushing induces the most effective salivary secretion. We investigated the effects of tooth brushing in different oral regions on parotid salivary secretion in humans. Saliva was collected using a modified Lashley cup. Brushing of the gingival margin was performed according to the Bass method, which may stimulate periodontal mechanoreceptors. The occlusal surface of the molars, gingiva, tongue, and palatal rugae were also brushed with a toothbrus
