Alterations of tactile and anatomical spatial representations of the hand after stroke.

Stroke often causes long-term motor and somatosensory impairments. Motor planning and tactile perception rely on spatial body representations. However, the link between altered spatial body representations, motor deficit and tactile spatial coding remains unclear. This study investigates the relationship between motor deficits and alterations of anatomical (body) and tactile spatial representations of the hand in 20 post-stroke patients with upper limb hemiparesis. Anatomical and tactile spatial representations were assessed from 10 targets (nails and knuckles) respectively cued verbally by th

Tactile distance anisotropy on the tongue.

A large literature has described illusions of tactile distance perception. Across many body parts, there is an anisotropic bias for tactile distances to be perceived as larger when oriented across body part width than when oriented along body part length. This study investigated whether there is a similar bias on the tongue. A forced-choice judgment task was used in which participants judged which of two tactile distances felt larger either on the tongue or on the hand dorsum, a region for which anisotropy is well established. Anisotropy was measured using the method of constant stimuli. Clear

Interventions for perceptual disorders following stroke.

BACKGROUND: Perception is the ability to understand information from our senses. It allows us to experience and meaningfully interact with our environment. A stroke may impair perception in up to 70% of stroke survivors, leading to distress, increased dependence on others, and poorer quality of life. Interventions to address perceptual disorders may include assessment and screening, rehabilitation, non-invasive brain stimulation, pharmacological and surgical approaches. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of interventions aimed at perceptual disorders after stroke compared to no intervent

The role of the inferior frontal gyrus in vicarious social touch: A transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) study.

The neural mechanisms facilitating the experience of vicarious social touch are largely unknown. The right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) has been suggested as part of a simulation observation-execution neural network that plays a key role in the perception of tactile stimuli. Considering that vicarious social touch involves vicarious sharing of emotions, we hypothesized that emotional empathy, i.e., the ability to feel what another individual is feeling, modulates the neural responses to vicarious touch. To examine the role of the rIFG in vicarious touch and its modulation by levels of emotion

SORI: A softness-rendering interface to unravel the nature of softness perception.

Tactile perception of softness serves a critical role in the survival, well-being, and social interaction among various species, including humans. This perception informs activities from food selection in animals to medical palpation for disease detection in humans. Despite its fundamental importance, a comprehensive understanding of how softness is neurologically and cognitively processed remains elusive. Previous research has demonstrated that the somatosensory system leverages both cutaneous and kinesthetic cues for the sensation of softness. Factors such as contact area, depth, and force p

Resolution enhancement of tongue tactile image based on deconvolution neural network.

To reproduce the tactile perception of multiple contacts on the human tongue surface, it is necessary to use a pressure measurement device with high spatial resolution. However, reducing the size of the array sensing unit and optimizing the lead arrangement still pose challenges. This article describes a deconvolution neural network (DNN) for improving the resolution of tongue surface tactile imaging, which alleviates this tradeoff between tactile sensing performance and hardware simplicity. The model can work without high-resolution tactile imaging data of tongue surface: First, in the compre

Spatial perspective-taking abilities on ambiguous tactile stimuli: The case of children with autism spectrum disorder or developmental coordination disorder.

Spatial perspective-taking corresponds to the ability to adopt someone else's point of view. Abnormalities in visual perspective-taking have been reported in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and developmental coordination disorder (DCD), which are highly comorbid conditions. This study explored the developmental aspects of perspective-taking in the tactile modality in typically developing children and children with NDD. A total of 107 children, aged between 6 and 17 years, completed the study: 74 were typically developing (TD) and 33 had a neurodevelo

The neural networks of touch observation.

Studies have consistently demonstrated that the mere observation of touch engages our own somatosensory cortices. However, a systematic evaluation of the involved networks is missing. Here, we present results of a meta-analytic connectivity modeling (MACM) approach based on clusters revealed by activation likelihood estimation (ALE) combined with resting-state analysis to detect networks subserving our ability to empathize with tactile experiences of other people. ALE analysis revealed 8 clusters in frontal, temporal, and parietal brain areas, which behavioral domain profiles predominantly ref

Tactile localization of the breast, areola, and nipple.

Touch plays a key role in our perception of our body and shapes our interactions with the world, from the objects we manipulate to the people we touch. While the tactile sensibility of the hand has been extensively characterized, much less is known about touch on other parts of the body. Despite the important role of the breast in lactation, as well as in affective and sexual touch, relatively little is known about its sensory properties. To fill this gap, we investigated the ability of women to locate touches on the breast and compared it to that of the hand and back, body regions that span t

The High/Low Frequency Balance Drives Tactile Perception of Noisy Vibrations.

Noisy vibrotactile signals transmitted during tactile explorations of an object provide precious information on the nature of its surface. Understanding the link between signal properties and how they are interpreted by the tactile sensory system remains challenging. In this paper, we investigated human perception of broadband, stationary vibrations recorded during exploration of textures and reproduced using a vibrotactile actuator. Since intensity is a well-established perceptual attribute, we here focused on the relevance of the spectral content. The stimuli were first equalized in perceive

Transfer of Tactile Learning to Untrained Body Parts: Emerging Cortical Mechanisms.

Pioneering investigations in the mid-19th century revealed that the perception of tactile cues presented to the surface of the skin improves with training, which is referred to as tactile learning. Surprisingly, tactile learning also occurs for body parts and skin locations that are not physically involved in the training. For example, after training of a finger, tactile learning transfers to adjacent untrained fingers. This suggests that the transfer of tactile learning follows a somatotopic pattern and involves brain regions such as the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), in which the trained

Temporal Electroencephalography Traits Dissociating Tactile Information and Cross-Modal Congruence Effects.

To explore whether temporal electroencephalography (EEG) traits can dissociate the physical properties of touching objects and the congruence effects of cross-modal stimuli, we applied a machine learning approach to two major temporal domain EEG traits, event-related potential (ERP) and somatosensory evoked potential (SEP), for each anatomical brain region. During a task in which participants had to identify one of two material surfaces as a tactile stimulus, a photo image that matched ('congruent') or mismatched ('incongruent') the material they were touching was given as a visual stimulus. Touched by loneliness-how loneliness impacts the response to observed human touch: a tDCS study.

Lonely people often crave connectedness. However, they may also experience their environment as threatening, entering a self-preserving state that perpetuates loneliness. Research shows conflicting evidence about their response to positive social cues, and little is known about their experience of observed human touch. The right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG) is part of an observation-execution network implicated in observed touch perception. Correlative studies also point to rIFG's involvement in loneliness. We examined the causal effect of rIFG anodal transcranial direct current stimulation o

Vicarious ratings of self vs. other-directed social touch in women with and recovered from Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is an eating pathology characterized by restricted eating, body image distortions and impaired socio-cognitive abilities. Altered responses to affective touch-a pleasant interoceptive stimulus hypothesised to involve activation of the C-Tactile (CT) system, may contribute to the aetiology and maintenance of this disorder. Here, we investigated whether third-party social touch vicarious ratings of different body sites at CT-optimal vs. non-CT optimal velocities differed in women with and recovered from AN (RAN) and healthy controls (HCs). Thirty-five HCs, 27 AN and 29 RAN

Channel-hopping during surface electrical neurostimulation elicits selective, comfortable, distally referred sensations.

Objective.Lack of sensation from a hand or prosthesis can result in substantial functional deficits. Surface electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerves is a promising non-invasive approach to restore lost sensory function. However, the utility of standard surface stimulation methods has been hampered by localized discomfort caused by unintended activation of afferents near the electrodes and limited ability to specifically target underlying neural tissue. The objectives of this work were to develop and evaluate a novel channel-hopping interleaved pulse scheduling (CHIPS) strategy for surf

Waiting longer, feeling fatter: Effects of response delay on tactile distance estimation and confidence in females with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) exhibit differences in the perceptual processing of their own bodies. However, some researchers suggest that these differences are better explained with reference to non-perceptual factors, such as demand characteristics or emotional responses to the task. In this study, we investigated whether overestimation of tactile distances in participants with AN results from differences in tactile processing or non-perceptual factors, by measuring the role of allowed response time in an adapted version of the tactile distance estima

Perception of partial slips under tangential loading of the fingertip.

During tactile exploration, partial slips occur systematically at the periphery of fingertip-object contact prior to full slip. Although the mechanics of partial slips are well characterized, the perception of such events is unclear. Here, we performed psychophysical experiments to assess partial slip detection ability on smooth transparent surfaces. In these experiments, the index fingertip of human subjects was stroked passively by a smooth, transparent glass plate while we imaged the contact slipping against the glass. We found that subjects were able to detect fingertip slip before full sl

Nonvisual multisensory impairment of body perception in anorexia nervosa: a systematic review of neuropsychological studies.

BACKGROUND: Body image distortion is a central symptom of Anorexia Nervosa (AN). Even if corporeal awareness is multisensory majority of AN studies mainly investigated visual misperception. We systematically reviewed AN studies that have investigated different nonvisual sensory inputs using an integrative multisensory approach to body perception. We also discussed the findings in the light of AN neuroimaging evidence. METHODS: PubMed and PsycINFO were searched until March, 2014. Auditory, tactile, and audiotactile information processing following visual deprivation.

We highlight the results of those studies that have investigated the plastic reorganization processes that occur within the human brain as a consequence of visual deprivation, as well as how these processes give rise to behaviorally observable changes in the perceptual processing of auditory and tactile information. We review the evidence showing that visual deprivation affects the establishment of the spatial coordinate systems involved in the processing of auditory and tactile inputs within the peripersonal space around an individual. In blind individuals, the absence of a conjoint activatio
