A trial use of some of Reitan's neuropsychological tests to assess mild organic complications in psychiatric patients.

Several testing procedures borrowed from Reitan's extensive investigations of impairment in brain function were employed in the present study (Tactual Performance Test, Trail Making Test, Seashore Rhythm Test, Speech Sounds Perception Test, Finger Oscillation Test). These tests were administer to three groups of Ss matched for age, education, and sex distribution. All Ss were 40 years of age or older. The groups were: hospitalized psychiatric patients suspected by their psychiatrists of some degree of organic impairment; hospitalized psychiatric patients not suspected of any organic impairment

Post-COVID-19 Neurocognitive Screening in Routine Pilot Aeromedical Evaluations.

INTRODUCTION: One crucial aspect of flight safety is being able to detect medical or neuropsychological conditions during aeromedical examinations. However, subtle but safety-significant post-COVID-19 neurocognitive impairments may go unreported or undetected. The Trail Making Test (TMT) and Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) can detect these impairments in domains essential to pilot performance, though further investigation is needed to assess their effectiveness and clinical utility in routine pilot aeromedical examinations. This short communication presents preliminary findings for using t

Factors associated with cognitive impairment in a cohort of older homeless adults: Results from the HOPE HOME study.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated cognitive function and factors associated with cognitive impairment in a cohort of older homeless adults. We hypothesized that substance use and a history of traumatic brain injury would be associated with cognitive impairment. METHODS: We recruited 350 homeless individuals aged ≥50 years using population-based sampling and conducted structured interviews and neuropsychological testing. We evaluated alcohol use with the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test, defining high-severity alcohol use as a total score ≥16 or ≥4 on the alcohol dependency sub-scale. We assess

High and Low Levels of an NTRK2-Driven Genetic Profile Affect Motor- and Cognition-Associated Frontal Gray Matter in Prodromal Huntington's Disease.

This study assessed how BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) and other genes involved in its signaling influence brain structure and clinical functioning in pre-diagnosis Huntington's disease (HD). Parallel independent component analysis (pICA), a multivariate method for identifying correlated patterns in multimodal datasets, was applied to gray matter concentration (GMC) and genomic data from a sizeable PREDICT-HD prodromal cohort (N = 715). pICA identified a genetic component highlighting NTRK2, which encodes BDNF's TrkB receptor, that correlated with a GMC component including supplement

Neuropsychological test performance of former American football players.

BACKGROUND: Patterns of cognitive impairment in former American football players are uncertain because objective neuropsychological data are lacking. This study characterized the neuropsychological test performance of former college and professional football players. METHODS: One hundred seventy male former football players (n=111 professional, n=59 college; 45-74 years) completed a neuropsychological test battery. Raw scores were converted to T-scores using age, sex, and education-adjusted normative data. A T-score ≤ 35 defined impairment. A domain was impaired if 2+ scores fell in the impai

Intervention for Cognitive Reserve Enhancement in Delaying the Onset of Alzheimer's Symptomatic Expression (INCREASE) Study: Results from a Randomized Controlled Study of Medication Therapy Management Targeting a Delay in Prodromal Dementia Symptom Progression.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive reserve has been hypothesized as a mechanism to explain differences in individual risk for symptomatic expression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Inappropriate medications may diminish cognitive reserve, precipitating the transition from preclinical AD (pAD) to a symptomatic state. To date, there is limited data on the potential impact of medication optimization as a potential tool for slowing the symptomatic expression of AD. OBJECTIVES: (1) To test the efficacy of a medication therapy management intervention designed to bolster cognitive reserve in community-dwelling olde

Aerosol delivery of trail pheromone disrupts the foraging of the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta.

BACKGROUND: The fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is one of the most aggressive and invasive species in the world. The trail pheromone Z,E-α-farnesene (91% purity) was prepared, and disruption of worker trail orientation was tested using an ethanol-based aerosol formulation presenting a single puff of this compound by airbrush and compressed air. Trail-following behaviour was recorded by overhead webcam and ants digitised before and after presentation of the aerosol treatment at four rates (1.6, 16, 160 and 1600 ng cm(-2)). RESULTS: Ants preferred 110 ng cm(-1) over 11, 1.1 and 0.11 ng cm(-1) for

Minimal Clinically Important Difference of Executive Function Performance in Older Adults Who Fall: A Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Executive function is responsive to exercise and predictive of subsequent falls. Minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) are critical for understanding whether observed changes are meaningful. However, MCIDs of many cognitive measures are not established. We aimed to determine MCIDs of the Digit Symbol Substitution Test ([DSST] processing speed measure), Stroop (inhibition measure), and Trail Making Test B-A (TMT; set-shifting measure), using anchor- and distribution-based approaches in older adults who have fallen and received the Otago Exercise Program (OEP) relative t

Relationship of executive function and educational status with functional balance in older adults.

BACKGROUND: The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) is frequently used to assess functional balance in older adults. The relationship of executive function and level of education with the BBS performance has not been described. The aim of this study was to determine whether (1) the performance on a task requiring executive function (part B of the Trail Making Test, TMT-B) influences results of motor and cognitive tests and (2) the number of years of formal education could be related to performance on BBS in older adults. We also explored whether there would be differences, based on performance on TMT-B (

Fluoxetine's effects on cognitive performance in patients with traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: There are preclinical data showing that fluoxetine stimulated expression of Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) and its specific tyrosine kinase receptor, and caused neuritic elongation and increased dendritic branching density of CA3 hippocampal pyramidal cell neurons in rodents. The latter effect of fluoxetine has been referred to as neuronal remodeling. In view of this preclinical data, we wondered if specific cognitive measures could serve as novel therapeutic targets for fluoxetine in head-injured patients. Theoretically, fluoxetine-induced "neuronal remodeling" might impr

Effect of Acupuncture on Cognitive Function and Quality of Life in Patients With Idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia.

To estimate the effect of acupuncture on idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (ITN), we recruited 116 patients with ITN from December 2016 to April 2018 and further divided into them into two groups: acupuncture intervention group (n = 62) and sham control group (n = 54). Clinical pain, cognitive function, and quality of life (QoL) assessed with the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) were evaluated at the initial time of treatment, at the end of treatment, and 6 weeks after the treatment. Pain intensity, headache, and generalized body pain showed significant decrease both at the end of treatm

Enhancing the Clinical Utility of DriveSafe DriveAware for People with Huntington's Disease.

DriveSafe DriveAware (DSDA) is a cognitive screening tool assessing driving safety. Previously, we found DSDA categorised some HD participants as 'likely to pass' on-road assessments, despite displaying cognitive impairments in domains known to impact driving. As processing speed is affected early in HD, we examined whether DSDA completion time could provide supplementary cognitive information to support clinical decision-making. The HD group completed subtests significantly slower than controls, and completion times correlated with cognitive functions essential for driving. Considering DSDA c

Long-term cognitive outcome in dural arteriovenous fistula after embolization therapy.

Patients with dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) suffer from cognitive impairments that go often unrecognized. This study aimed to explore the severity of cognitive impairment as well as specific cognitive domains affected in DAVF patients and to track its evolution over long-term follow-up after embolization. Consecutive DAVF patients (and an equal number of healthy controls) were prospectively enrolled and underwent a comprehensive baseline neuropsychological (NP) assessment. These patients were re-evaluated postembolization at a short-term follow-up of 1 month and long-term follow-up of 8-
