Complete hydatidiform mole (CHM), a condition related to abnormal gestation, occurs predominantly in the young reproductive age group and has a high prevalence rate in the Trivandrum region, occurring in 1.2% of deliveries. Transforming growth factor alpha (TGF-alpha) is an important growth regulatory molecule, the location and function of which at the human fetomaternal interface in CHM remains to be determined. The present study examined the presence of TGF-alpha in the normal and complete molar placenta and decidua throughout gestation. A total of 149 complete molar placental tissue samples

OBJECT: Prominent features of moyamoya disease are intimal thickening of the cerebral arterial trunks and abundant angiogenesis for collateral blood supplies, but its pathogenesis is still unknown. The aim of this study was to test the possibility that transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGFbeta1) may play a role in the pathogenesis of moyamoya disease.
METHODS: The authors used reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction to analyze the expression level of TGFbeta1 in smooth-muscle cells cultured from the superficial temporal arteries (STAs) and measured the serum level of TGFbeta1 by using

Hamsters infected with Leishmania donovani develop a disease similar to human kala-azar. They present hypergammaglobulinemia, and their T cells do not respond to parasite antigens. This unresponsiveness has been primarily ascribed to defects in antigen-presenting cells (APCs), because these cells are unable to stimulate proliferation of parasite-specific T cells from immunized animals. In this study, we show that APCs (adherent spleen cells) from L. donovani-infected hamsters produce high levels of the inhibitory cytokine transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta). Immunohistochemical studies

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the hypothesis that transforming growth factor beta2 (TGF-beta2) is involved in the cause of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR).
METHODS: We assayed TGF-beta2 levels in the vitreous of patients with PDR and other vitreoretinal disorders. Forty-nine vitreous specimens were obtained from eyes of patients with PDR undergoing vitrectomy, and 19 vitreous specimens from nondiabetic subjects served as controls. We assessed TGF-beta2 levels using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Both mature and total TGF-beta2 levels were quantified.
RESULTS: The mean (+/- SD) total

We used immunohistochemical techniques to study the distribution of transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-beta 1) and infiltrating lymphocytes and macrophages in human astrocytomas. Thirteen of 15 grade 4 astrocytomas (glioblastomas) showed staining with anti-TGF-beta 1 antibody, predominantly in proliferating endothelial complexes and surrounding small and medium-sized blood vessels. Brain tissue microscopically free of tumor cells (n = 8) and more differentiated astrocytomas of varying grade (1 to 3; n = 6) devoid of endothelial proliferation did not stain with anti-TGF-beta 1. Normal brain

The effect of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF beta) on bone in vivo was examined. Twelve daily injections of 1 microgram TGF beta directly onto the periostea of parietal bones of neonatal rats stimulated the formation of periosteal woven bone. The thickness of the treated parietal bones increased at least 2-fold in a dose-dependent manner. This TGF beta effect was localized at the sites of injection, and no change was observed in contralateral parietal bones and tibiae. The body weight in these growing rats was not affected by TGF beta 1. TGF beta 2 had effects similar to those of TGF bet

Using immunohistochemical methods, we have investigated the role of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) in the development of the mouse embryo. For detection of TGF-beta in 11-18-d-old embryos, we have used a polyclonal antibody specific for TGF-beta type 1 and the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique. Staining of TGF-beta is closely associated with mesenchyme per se or with tissues derived from mesenchyme, such as connective tissue, cartilage, and bone. TGF-beta is conspicuous in tissues derived from neural crest mesenchyme, such as the palate, larynx, facial mesenchyme, nasal sinuses,

Ischemic stroke is one of the most disabling and fatal diseases around the world. The damaged brain tissues will undergo excessive autophagy, vascular endothelial cells injury, blood-brain barrier (BBB) impairment and neuroinflammation after ischemic stroke. However, there is no unified viewpoint on the underlying mechanism of brain damage. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), as a multi-functional cytokine, plays a crucial role in the intricate pathological processes and helps maintain the physiological homeostasis of brain tissues through various signaling pathways after ischemic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a premalignant condition mainly caused by areca nut chewing and is characterized by progressive fibrosis of submucosal tissues and epithelial atrophy. Activation of transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) signaling is considered main causative event for increased collagen production and fibrosis. In this study, molecular pathogenesis of OSMF was investigated based on the expression of the TGF-β genes in OSMF tissues compared to normal controls.
METHODS: A total of 33 OSMF and 10 normal tissues were collected from patients and their clinic-epidemio

Transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) signaling regulates multifaceted reproductive processes. It has been shown that the type 1 receptor of TGFβ (TGFBR1) is indispensable for female reproductive tract development, implantation, placental development, and fertility. However, the role of TGFβ signaling in decidual development and function remains poorly defined. Our objective is to determine the impact of uterine-specific deletion of Tgfbr1 on decidual integrity, with a focus on the cellular and molecular properties of the decidua during development. Our results show that the developmental dyn

Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), a pleiotropic cytokine, regulates a diverse range of cellular responses, such as proliferation, differentiation, migration, and apoptosis. The TGF-β1, -β2, and -β3 isoforms are expressed by neurons and glial cells, and their receptors are expressed throughout the central nervous system. Several lines of evidence demonstrate that TGF-β signaling protects neurons from glutamate-mediated excitotoxicity, a putative mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Recent studies indicate t
