In response to changing climatic conditions, people are increasingly likely to migrate. However, individual-level survey data reveal that people mainly state economic, social, or political reasons as the main drivers for their relocation decision-not environmental motives or climate change specifically. To shed light on this discrepancy, we distinguish between sudden-onset (e.g., floods and storms) and slow-onset (e.g., droughts and salinity) climatic changes and argue that the salience of environmental conditions in individuals' migration decisions is shaped by the type of climate event exper

We describe a case of imported ocular dirofilariasis in Australia, linked to the Hong Kong genotype of Dirofilaria sp., in a migrant from Sri Lanka. Surgical extraction and mitochondrial sequences analyses confirmed this filarioid nematode as the causative agent and a Dirofilaria sp. not previously reported in Australia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This review aims to estimate the prevalence of undernutrition among migrants, refugees, internally displaced children, and children of migrated parents living in lower-middle-income countries.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Science-Direct, CINAHL-Plus, & Google Scholar were searched for peer-reviewed evidence published between January 2010 to March 2023. Two researchers independently examined the studies and retrieved the data. The internal and external validity of the studies was assessed using the NIH quality assessment tool, and a checklist adapted from Downs & Black, Bracht

PURPOSE: Rooted in a trans-territorial framework, the present study was designed to provide new evidence regarding the patterns of communication among Hurricane Maria survivors who migrated to the U.S. in the aftermath of the storm.
METHODS: A total of 319 Hurricane Maria survivor adults ages 18 and older were recruited into the Adelante Boricua study between August 2020 and October 2021. Most participants had relocated to the U.S. between 2017 and 2018. We used latent profile analysis and multinomial regression to examine the relationship of technology-based communication with depressive sym

The British colony of South Australia, established in 1836, offered a fresh start to migrants hoping for a better life. A cohort of settlers buried in a section of St Mary's Anglican Church Cemetery (1847-1927) allocated for government funded burials was investigated to determine their health, with a focus on skeletal manifestations associated with metabolic deficiencies. Findings of St Mary's sample were compared with those published for contemporary skeletal samples from two British cemeteries, St Martin's, Birmingham, and St Peter's, Wolverhampton, to explore similarities and differences. The cost-effectiveness of migrant tuberculosis prevention programs is highly relevant to many countries with low tuberculosis incidence as they attempt to eliminate the disease. Dale et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2022;191(2):255-270) evaluated strategies for tuberculosis infection screening and treatment among new migrants to Australia. Screening for infection before migration, and then administering preventive treatment after arrival, was more cost-effective than performing both screening and treatment after arrival. From the Australian health payer perspective, the improved cost-effectiveness of p

The glaring lack of formal and informal caregivers in Germany has not only become apparent in hospitals and nursing homes but also in home care arrangements. One tension is particularly pertinent in such arrangements: a 'family-oriented' logic of the long-term care insurance and the individual wishes of those in need of care meet the actual possibilities of family carers. This care gap has been compensated for by 24-hour care workers, so-called 'live-ins', from Eastern Europe for some years. This contribution maps the 'live-ins' situation comprehensively from an ethical perspective. Based on d

BACKGROUND: Migrant populations are at an increased risk of exposure to malaria due to their nature of work and seasonal migration. This study aimed to compare malaria prevention behaviours and care-seeking practices among worksite migrant workers and villagers in the malaria-at-risk areas of Eastern Myanmar close to the China border.
METHODS: A mixed method study was conducted in March 2019. The malaria-at-risk worksites in the four targeted townships, and villages located the nearest to these worksites were approached. Key stakeholders, such as worksite managers and village leaders, were in

BACKGROUND: Mobile and migrant populations (MMPs) pose a unique challenge to disease elimination campaigns as they are often hard to survey and reach with treatment. While some elimination efforts have had success reaching MMPs, other campaigns are struggling to do so, which may be affecting progress towards disease control and elimination. Therefore, this paper reviews the literature on elimination campaigns targeting MMPs across a selection of elimination diseases-neglected tropical diseases, malaria, trypanosomiasis, polio, smallpox, and rinderpest.

BACKGROUND: Migration is an established risk factor for developing a psychotic disorder in countries with a long history of migration. Less is known for countries with only a recent history of migration. This study aimed to determine the risk for developing a psychotic disorder in migrants to the Republic of Ireland.
METHODS: We included all presentations of first-episode psychosis over 8.5 years to the DETECT Early Intervention for psychosis service in the Republic of Ireland (573 individuals aged 18-65, of whom 22% were first-generation migrants). Psychotic disorder diagnosis relied on SCID

Globally, the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) falls disproportionately on underserved populations. Migrants and refugees are particularly vulnerable due to economic instability and systemic poverty. Despite the myriad of health risks faced by migrants and refugees, access to appropriate healthcare is hindered by structural, cultural and socioeconomic barriers. We conducted a systematic review and meta-ethnography to obtain critical insight into how the interplay of social capital and structural factors (eg, state policies and socioeconomic disadvantage) influences the prevention and

During the past decade, global human movement created a virtually "borderless world". Consequently, the developed world is facing "forgotten" and now imported infectious diseases. Many infections are observed upon travel and migration, and the clinical spectrum is diverse, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe septic shock. The severity of infection depends on the etiology and timeliness of diagnosis. While assessing the etiology of severe infection in travelers and migrants, it is important to acquire a detailed clinical history; geography, dates of travel, places visited, type of tra

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) Action Plan for Refugee and Migrant Health highlights the need for strengthened migration health governance and data-informed policies. A major barrier in Europe has been the lack of systematically collected and comparable cancer data stratified by migration background.
METHODS: This study assesses the availability of routine data to map and examines differences of cancer risk among those with a migration background in Europe. The cancer types selected (breast, colorectal, cervical, stomach, liver, and lung) are either infection-related or amena

We aimed to estimate the prevalence of clinical and modifiable sociodemographic characteristics of individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds who died by suicide and, where possible, compare them to the majority population. Databases were searched for studies published between 01/01/2000-19/12/2023. Absolute and relative prevalence estimates of characteristics were reported by minority group (Indigenous; migrant; other ethnic minority) then stratified by continent and, where applicable, migrant sub-type and ethnicity. A narrative synthesis was conducted with moderate-high quality studies. We

BACKGROUND: Knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours towards smoking have been extensively researched across diverse populations with migration experience. The objective of this scoping review was to understand the extent, type, and geographical distribution of the published literature on smoking among people with migration experience across the globe.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review using the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. Supported by two information specialists, we performed a comprehensive literature search (from 2012- 17 January 2024) in five databases, without language or geogr

The migration phenomenon is increasingly common worldwide. It is essential for radiologists to be aware of the endemic diseases of the migrant's country as well as the characteristics of the journey to be able to understand and interpret radiological findings when admitted to our centre. This article aims to use imaging from our centre to describe the most common pathologies that migrant patients present with after long journeys by boat.
