OBJECTIVES: Radical, full-thickness resection of the bladder wall and overlying bladder tumor is a management option in highly selected patients with muscle invasive bladder cancer. The consequences of iatrogenic ureteral injury in patients whose tumor involves the ureteral orifice and intramural ureter have not been reported. This report details an experience with 4 patients who underwent full-thickness resection of the hemi-trigone and distal ureter as treatment for muscle-invasive bladder tumors.
METHODS: Between August 1995 and February 1999, 4 patients with T2 transitional cell cancer in

Transurethral resection (TUR) is regarded as the treatment of choice for relief of outflow tract obstruction in the male, but bladder neck incision (BNI) is an acceptable alternative when the gland is small. Seven hundred cases of TUR/BNI have been reviewed (TUR = 388; BNI = 312). BNI was performed when the gland was less than 35 g and where there was no clinical suspicion of malignancy. The operative details of our single incision technique are given. While the patients in the BNI group were younger, catheter stay was shorter, there was less infection, a significantly reduced need for blood t

BACKGROUND: The role of repeat transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) for the management of nonmuscle invasive bladder carcinoma is debated, especially when initial resections include detrusor muscle. This study compares immediate second resection (additional deep biopsies in the same session) with standard restage TURBT performed 2-6 weeks post-initial TURBT to determine adequacy in detrusor muscle sampling and compare the disease rate at restage TURBT in both groups.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A randomized trial was conducted at a tertiary care hospital, including patients aged ≥18 yea

BACKGROUND: Catheter-related bladder discomfort occurs because of involuntary contractions of the bladder smooth muscle after urinary catheterization. Magnesium is associated with smooth muscle relaxation. This study hypothesized that among patients having transurethral resection of bladder tumor, magnesium will reduce the incidence of postoperative moderate-to-severe catheter-related bladder discomfort.
METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized study, patients were randomly allocated to the magnesium group (n = 60) or the control group (n = 60). In magnesium group, a 50 mg/kg loading dose of

BACKGROUND: We reviewed our experience with bladder conservative treatment for invasive bladder cancer in 20 patients to investigate which type of tumor was suitable for organ conservation.
METHODS: We performed radical transurethral resection with dissection to deep layer of the muscle plus intra-arterial chemoinfusion of the cis-platinum at a dose of 80-100 mg/body twice at least, and the recurrent tumor was treated by the same procedure. There were 13 cases of stage T2 and 7 cases of stage T3a. All patients were pathologically diagnosed transitional cell carcinoma with 9 cases of grade 2 a

RATIONALE: Disease recurrence and progression remain major challenges in the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Blue light-enhanced transurethral resection of bladder cancer (TURBT) is an approach to improve staging and achieve a complete resection of NMIBC. Since the first version of this review was published in 2021, new evidence on this topic has become available.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of blue light-enhanced TURBT compared to white light-based TURBT in the treatment of non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched several medical literat

INTRODUCTION: Bladder amyloidosis is a rare condition characterized by amyloid fibril deposition in the bladder, often mimicking bladder cancer. Diagnosis requires histological analysis of the examination, and treatment typically involves transurethral resection.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 80-year-old male presented with gross hematuria. Computed tomography suggested bladder cancer with pulmonary metastases. However, due to the extent of the bladder tumor, complete resection was not feasible, and only a limited transurethral resection was performed for diagnostic purposes. Pathological examination

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is crucial in the treatment of bladder tumors and when incorrectly performed can cause staging mistakes. To avoid these errors, a second resection is recommended in selected cases. The aim of this study is to evaluate the surgeon's ability to predict histologically complete primary resection of newly diagnosed bladder tumors avoiding the need for a second TURBT.
METHODS: This is a prospective, observational study involving 47 consecutive patients with newly diagnosed bladder tumors who had previously undergone prima

Bladder neck contracture is a common complication of the TURP. Traumatic inflictions may lead to the formation of scar tissue around the bladder neck which makes this tubular structure narrower than the normal. It causes urinary flow obstruction associated with pain, heaviness, hesitancy and incomplete bladder emptying. In Ayurveda, such features have been described under the context of Vatakundalika and Mutrotsanga under the chapter 58 named 'Mutraghata Pratishedha Adhyaya'of Uttar Tanta of Sushruta Samhita. Bladder neck resection surgery is considered as the surgical treatment in this case b

OBJECTIVE: To confirm frozen section (FS) method for muscularis propria (MP) sampling and to compare the FS method with the ReTUR section (RS) procedure to reduce needing for second resection that can cause waste of time for definitive treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
METHODS: A total of 27 patients who admitted to our clinic and was performed transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TUR-BT) due to bladder tumor and had an indication of ReTUR were evaluated prospectively in the study. During the first TUR-BT procedure (as permanent section), FS examination was also performed to t

INTRODUCTION: Despite today's standard procedure for staging and treating non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer by transurethral resection via a wire loop (TURBT), several other publications have dealt with a different concept of en bloc resection of bladder tumors using different energy sources.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: MEDLINE and the Cochrane central register were searched for the following terms: en bloc, mucosectomy, laser, resection, ablation, Neodym, Holmium, Thulium, transitional cell carcinoma.
RESULTS: Fourteen research articles dealing with en bloc resection of non-muscle-invasive bladd

INTRODUCTION: The safety of simultaneous transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) and bladder tumor removal in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and bladder cancer remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to find out how TUR-P affects the recurrence, progression, and prostatic urethral invasion in patients with NMIBC (non-muscle invasive bladder cancer) and BPH.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of bladder cancer patients treated between 2010 and 2023. Among them, 49 patients received either TUR-P alone or in conjunction with transurethral

OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the effect of transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P) in men with weak bladder contractility who were unresponsive to medical treatment.
METHODS: Among the patients who underwent TUR-P for lower urinary tract symptoms at our institution, we reviewed the records of consecutive 71 patients who had preoperative urodynamic evaluations. According to the bladder outlet obstruction index and the bladder contractility index, the patients were divided into 2 groups: group A (25 patients) with unobstructed and weak bladder contractility, and group B (46 patients) with o

PURPOSE: We report our experience with repeat transurethral resection (TUR) in a group of patients with superficial bladder tumors in whom complete resection in one session was impossible because of the extensive tumor burden.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Only the patients with such extensive (>10 g of resected tissue) tumors that we were unable to perform complete TUR initially were included in the present study. The patients underwent repeat TUR(s) 4 weeks after the previous one until complete resection of the tumor was achieved. After complete TUR, if the pathology examination confirmed superfici

INTRODUCTION: The availability of specialized HIV services is limited in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa where the need is the greatest. Where HIV services are available, people living with HIV (PLHIV) must overcome large geographic, economic and social barriers to access healthcare. The objective of this study was to understand the unique barriers PLHIV face when accessing healthcare compared with those not living with HIV in a rural area of sub-Saharan Africa with limited availability of healthcare infrastructure.
METHODS: We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study of 447 heads

We present a retrospective review of 30 patients who developed upper urinary tract tumors (UUTT) after having been diagnosed and treated for a bladder neoplasm. The mean patient age was 63 years (range 54-72). An average of 4.8 (range 1-10) transurethral resections (TUR) had been performed for bladder cancer prior to the appearance of UUTT. The length of time elapsed between the initial bladder TUR and the subsequent diagnosis of UUTT was variable, with increased incidence in the first 24-72 months (63.3% of the cases). In 21 cases (70%) the bladder tumor was multiple and in 28 (93.3%) the tum
