Delayed treatment for decompression illness: factors associated with long treatment delays and treatment outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Effectiveness of delayed hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) for decompression illness (DCI) and factors affecting treatment delays have not been studied in large groups of patients. METHODS: This retrospective study included 546 DCI patients treated in Finland in the years 1999-2018 and investigated factors associated with recompression delay and outcome. Treatment outcome was defined as fully recovered or presence of residual symptoms on completion of HBOT. The symptoms, use of first aid oxygen, number of recompression treatments needed and characteristics of the study cohort w

Sex Differences in Stroke Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcome.

OBJECTIVE: This article examines how sex and gender differences affect stroke recognition, treatment, and outcomes and identifies strategies to advance equity across the stroke care continuum. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: Recent evidence highlights persistent sex-based and gender-based disparities in stroke care. Women are less likely to be identified by emergency services as having a stroke, largely because they have more frequent nonfocal presentations (eg, diffuse weakness, confusion). Standard prehospital tools often miss these signs. Although sex disparities in the administration of acute treatm

Prediction of treatment outcome in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the American Joint Committee on Cancer staging systems do not reliably predict outcomes in nasopharyngeal carcinoma as patients with similar tumour stages and treatments often experience divergent outcomes. This study aimed to develop prediction models for overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), locoregional control (LRC), and distant control (DC) based on routinely collected clinical parameters in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients treated with (chemo)radiation to support personalised treatment strategies. METHODS: Data from 956 patients treated with inte

Surgical treatment and outcome of spinal arteriovenous malformations.

AIM: A rare and diverse set of abnormalities formed by spinal blood arteries known as spinal arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) has a higher risk of hemorrhage and morbidity, causing the shunting of blood from veins with an aberrant capillary bed to arteries. Knowledge of the vascular anatomy of spinal AVMs and the spinal cord's vascular supply is crucial to its therapy. The aim of this study was to report a case of SAVM healing after surgical excision, highlighting the importance of surgical excision in treating these rare lesions. METHODS: A 56-year-old male with progressive bilateral lower

Respiratory consequences after COVID-19: outcome and treatment.

The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic represents the infection with the highest lethality, but also the one that has caused the most sequelae and multi-organ consequences, especially respiratory, in the last century. Several actions have been required in the field of respiratory and intensive care medicine to reduce mortality and chronicity. The consequences of COVID-19 are multiple and encompass different physical, emotional, organizing, and economic aspects, which will require a multidisciplinary, transversal, and collaborative approach. This review includes the observations and results of publ

Clinical characteristics and treatment outcome of Candida tracheobronchitis.

Although Candida species can cause invasive fungal diseases, such as disseminated infection and pneumonia, they rarely cause tracheobronchitis, which is often fatal. To identify the clinical characteristics of Candida tracheobronchitis, we retrospectively evaluated 8 patients who had pathologically proven Candida tracheobronchitis.Their median age was 64 (range: 51-70) years and 5 were females. Three patients had solid cancers and 5 had hematological malignancies. We classified tracheobronchitis into localized and diffuse types. Of the 8 patients, 5 had localized and 3 had diffuse tracheobronch

Treatment Outcome of Hydrocephalus Associated with Vestibular Schwannoma.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Managing hydrocephalus in patients with vestibular schwannoma (VS) is controversial. We evaluated the clinical factors associated with hydrocephalus. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2019, 562 patients with VS were treated at our institute. We applied endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV), external ventricular drainage (EVD), and ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts to patients with hydrocephalus. The relationships of patient, tumor, and surgical variables with the hydrocephalus outcome were assessed. RESULTS: Preoperative hydrocephalus (Evans ratio ≥0.3) was present in 128 pat

[Radial head fractures : Epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and outcome].

Radial head fractures account for the majority of bony injuries to the elbow. The usual clinical signs include hemarthrosis, pain and limitations in movement. The standard diagnostic tool is radiological imaging using X‑rays and for more complex fractures, computed tomography (CT). Concomitant ligamentous injuries occur more frequently than expected and must be reliably excluded. The classification is based on the modified Mason classification. Mason type I fractures are usually treated conservatively with immobilization and early functional aftercare. Mason type II fractures can be well-addre

Functional connectivity predictors of acute depression treatment outcome.

Few studies have examined functional connectivity (FC) patterns using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to predict outcomes in late-life depression. We hypothesized that FC within and between frontal and limbic regions would be associated with 12-week depression outcome in older depressed adults. Seventy-one subjects with major depression were enrolled in the study. A study geriatric psychiatrist performed a clinical interview and completed a Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). All study participants were free of medication at baseline and had a brain fMRI scan. Using

Displaced juvenile Tillaux fractures : Surgical treatment and outcome.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 15 % of all juvenile injuries of the long bones involve the epiphyseal growth plate, and 2.9 % of these are juvenile Tillaux fractures. The Tillaux fracture is of great importance because it involves a major weight-bearing articular surface. Treatment protocols in the literature are not uniform for this kind of fracture, and numerous case reports can be found describing various treatment methods. The aim of this study was to present the clinical outcome at long-term follow-up after treatment of displaced Tillaux fractures. METHODS: In all, 168 children and adolescent
