Bayesian Additive Regression Trees for Modeling Multiple Exposures With Measurement Error.

We develop a Bayesian Additive Regression Trees with Measurement Error (BART-ME) model for flexibly estimating exposure-response functions when multiple covariates are measured with classical error. Unlike existing approaches, BART-ME accommodates nonlinearities, interactions, correlated exposures, and correlated measurement errors, while exploiting replicate measurements to estimate the error variance-covariance structure. Posterior inference is obtained via a Metropolis-within-Gibbs algorithm, yielding estimates of exposure-response functions, variable importance, and measurement reliability

Spatial overlap of palm trees and triatomine distribution areas in Brazil.

Trypanosoma cruzi transmission occurs in the sylvatic environment, requiring a profound understanding of the interaction between triatomines and their natural ecotopes. This study investigated the spatial association between four triatomine species (Rhodnius robustus, Rhodnius pictipes, Rhodnius neglectus, Rhodnius nasutus) and palm trees (Arecaceae) in Brazil. We employed analyses of ecological niche overlap (Schoener's D Index), spatial correlation (Spearman), and an assessment of vector presence across palm richness strata. Two distinct ecological profiles were identified. R. robustus and R.

Multifactor analysis of cost of injury using classification and regression trees.

OBJECTIVES: In this study we have two objectives: 1. To establish a dominant cost of injury structure. We perform an analysis of full medical cost for crash injuries including hospital charges and professional fees, to determine a cost structure model that can be extrapolated to higher level datasets. 2. To build multifactor models for cost of injury based on Classification and Regression Trees (CART) machine learning technique. This type of analytical tool gives us many advantages compared to other methods. METHODS: We use two sources of data: the Maryland statewide hospital population data

larch: mapping the parsimony-optimal landscape of trees for directed exploration.

Phylogenetic inference algorithms for large data sets typically return a single tree. However, there are often many optimal trees, especially when sequence data is closely related. We develop a compact representation of large collections of maximally parsimonious histories-trees with mutations mapped onto tree edges. Our C++ implementation, larch, leverages this representation for a highly parallel search algorithm. The storage component uses our history DAG structure to compactly represent large families of optimal trees. The search algorithm integrates this storage with matOptimize for rapid

Mechanical fatigue in trees mitigated by annual growth: A theoretical model.

Mechanical forces applied over a period of time tend to cause fatigue failure in natural organisms and in engineering structures. Here, the theoretical approach known as Continuum Damage Mechanics is applied to study fatigue damage development in trees. It is found that growth in the form of an annual ring of new material is a very effective strategy to limit fatigue damage, due to the fact that, over time, each ring moves inside the trunk, reducing stress. If (as is generally assumed) the tree grows so as to keep the bending stress on its trunk constant, then fatigue failure will be effective

The Role of the Xylem in Oxytetracycline Translocation within Citrus Trees.

Antibiotics have been successfully used to control plant diseases for more than fifty years. Recently, oxytetracycline and streptomycin have been approved for the treatment of Huanglongbing, which is threatening the citrus industry in many regions. Because the efficiency of antibiotics in planta is highly affected by their movement and distribution, understanding the mechanism of antibiotics' uptake and distribution could lead to a better control of plant pathogens. Herein, we investigated the movement of oxytetracycline within citrus plants. Oxytetracycline was applied by root drenching to bo

A new Calliprora species mining lead trees in Florida (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae).

Calliprora leucaenae sp. nov. is described infesting foliage of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. in Florida, USA. The larvae are blotch-miners and leaf-tiers and are capable of heavy damage to host plants. Photographs of the adult, wing venation, male and female genitalia and illustrations of the larval and pupal chaetotaxy are provided. Calliprora Meyrick is transferred to Thiotrichinae, as the species in the genus exhibit typical characters of the subfamily such as the presence of anellus lobes, a large sternum VIII, and a reduced male tergum VIII. Comparative diagnoses of the morphology

Baclofen and gastroesophageal reflux disease: seeing the forest through the trees.

Baclofen has been shown to decrease reflux events and increase lower esophageal sphincter pressure, yet has never established a clear role in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Lei and colleagues have shown in a recent elegant study that baclofen reduces the frequency and initiation of secondary peristalsis and heightens esophageal sensitivity to capsaicin-mediated stimulation. These findings may help explain both the benefit of baclofen in conditions such as rumination and supragastric belching, as well as the apparent lack of benefit of baclofen and other GABAB agonists

Phytoforensics: Trees as bioindicators of potential indoor exposure via vapor intrusion.

Human exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via vapor intrusion (VI) is an emerging public health concern with notable detrimental impacts on public health. Phytoforensics, plant sampling to semi-quantitatively delineate subsurface contamination, provides a potential non-invasive screening approach to detect VI potential, and plant sampling is effective and also time- and cost-efficient. Existing VI assessment methods are time- and resource-intensive, invasive, and require access into residential and commercial buildings to drill holes through basement slabs to install sampling ports o

Bacterial landscape of human skin: seeing the forest for the trees.

Skin harbours large communities of colonizing bacteria. The same bacterial species can exist in different physiological states: viable, dormant, non-viable. Each physiological state can have a different impact on skin health and disease. Various analytical methodologies target different physiological states of bacteria, and this must be borne in mind while interpreting microbiological tests and drawing conclusions about possible cause-effect relationships.

Volatilization of trichloroethylene from trees and soil: measurement and scaling approaches.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) volatilization from leaves, trunk, and soil was measured to assess the significance of these pathways from phytoremediation sites at Travis and Fairchild Air Force Bases. Measurements were scaled temporally and spatially to estimate the annual volatilization of TCE at the Travis (0.82 ± 0.51 kg/yr) and Fairchild sites (0.014 ± 0.008 kg/yr). Volatilization was primarily through the leaf (0.34 ± 0.16 kg/yr at Travis and 0.01 ± 0.06 kg/yr at Fairchild) and soil (0.48 ± 0.36 kg/yr at Travis, 0.003 ± 0.002 kg/yr at Fairchild) pathways. The larger volatilization estimate at T

The investigation of irrigation with wastewater on trees (Populus deltoids L.).

The urban green space and environment should be considered to be among the most fundamental elements of the sustainability of natural and human life in the new citizenship. To investigate the effect of irrigation on northern Mashad municipal effluent treatment plant effluent on the chemical properties of soil and accumulation of nutrient in poplar trees, a study was carried out using a random-systematic pattern. To investigate soil as well as accumulation of nutrients and cadmium in leaves, samples of soil (0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm) and leaves were taken from each plot in four replications. Th

Water, heat, and airborne pollutants effects on transpiration of urban trees.

Transpiration rates of six urban tree species in Beijing evaluated by thermal dissipation method for one year were correlated to environmental variables in heat, water, and pollutant groups. To sort out colinearity of the explanatory variables, their individual and joint contributions to variance of tree transpiration were determined by the variation and hierarchical partitioning methods. Majority of the variance in transpiration rates was associated with joint effects of variables in heat and water groups and variance due to individual effects of explanatory group were in comparison small. USE OF NATIVE PLANTS FOR REMEDIATION OF TRICHLOROETHYLENE: II. CONIFEROUS TREES.

The phytoremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) from contaminated groundwater has been extensively studied using the hybrid poplar tree (Populus spp.). Several metabolites of TCE have been identified in the tissue of poplar including trichloroethanol (TCEOH) and dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA). In addition to the use of hybrid poplar for the phytoremediation of TCE, it is important to screen native tree species that could be successful candidates for field use. This study involves a greenhouse-based comparison of four different native southeastern conifers to a hybri

USE OF NATIVE PLANTS FOR REMEDIATION OF TRICHLOROETHYLENE: I. DECIDUOUS TREES.

Phytoremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) can be accomplished using fast-growing, deep-rooting trees. The most commonly used tree for phytoremediation of TCE has been the hybrid poplar. This study looks at native southeastern trees of the United States as alternatives to the use of hybrid poplar. The use of native trees for phytoremediation allows for simultaneous restoration of contaminated sites. A 2-mo, greenhouse-based study was conducted to determine if sycamore (Plantanus L.), eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides), sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.), and willow (Salix sachalinensis

First Incidence of Plum Pox Virus on Apricot Trees in China.

Plum pox disease, caused by Plum pox virus (PPV), is the most severe virus disease of plums, apricots, and peaches. The disease causes heavy losses for fruit growers and the international trade of propagation materials and fresh fruits. PPV was first reported in Bulgaria in 1917 (1). It is now widespread in Europe and has been reported from Cyprus, Syria, Egypt, India, Kazakhstan, Chile, the United States, and Canada. Leaves on symptomatic apricot trees (Prunus armeniaca cvs. Hong Mei and Bai Mei and a selected genotype) in the Hunan Province of China showed typical yellow rings and diffused c
