An agent-based model for predicting the prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi I and II in their host and vector populations.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the causative agent of Chagas disease, an endemic human parasitosis in Latin America. This protozoan is transmitted to human and other mammals by blood-feeding bugs belonging to the Triatominae subfamily. There are two strains (T. cruzi I and T. cruzi II) presenting different biological and ecological characteristics. An original agent-based model (ABM) was designed for predicting the prevalence (i.e., proportion of infected individuals in the total population at a given time) of T. cruzi I and II during single and mixed infections. The ABM was calibrated from experimental

Hospesneotomae n. gen. of the Triatomini tribe presents a turnaround in the taxonomy of the Triatoma protracta species complex.

The Triatominae are of relevant public health importance because they include hematophagous species which are proven or potential vectors of Chagas disease. Currently, eighteen genera are considered valid in this subfamily. Through a comprehensive and integrative study, the description of a new genus of Triatomine, the nineteenth of the subfamily, is presented. Were generated a robust phylogeny from data deposited in Genbank, created a table comparing two genera with Hospesneotomae, and prepared a dichotomous key for the genus and species. To this end, several systematic pieces of evidence abo

Low risk for locally acquired Chagas disease in California: A review of human cases and triatomine submissions, 2013-2023.

Chagas disease is caused by infection with the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which is carried in the guts of triatomine insects. Transmission typically occurs when infective trypomastigotes in triatomine feces encounter mucous membranes or bite wounds, though it is also possible by food-borne, transplant- and transfusion-mediated, and congenital routes. Most transmission occurs in rural and peri-urban parts of continental Latin America where triatomines often inhabit human dwellings. Triatomines infected with T. cruzi are also present across the southern United States, yet relatively f

Analysis of the maternal inheritance hypothesis of the exochorium in eggs from hybrids of Chagas disease vectors.

Morphological studies applied to the taxonomy of the Triatominae cover various structures (head, wing, thorax, genitalia, and eggs). Exochorial structures of hybrid eggs were characterized and compared with the parents, demonstrating that hybrids presented characteristics identical to the exochorial pattern observed in the females of the crosses, which resulted in the hypothesis that the pattern of triatomine eggs is possibly a characteristic inherited from females. Thus, we characterized the exochorium of the eggs of several triatomine hybrids and compared them with the parents, to assess the

Autochthonous Chagas disease in the southern United States: A case report of suspected residential and military exposures.

Chagas disease is a parasitic infection that can result in a progressive dilated cardiomyopathy. Here, we present the epidemiologic details of a suspected locally acquired transmission case originating from the southern United States. This is the first published report of Chagas disease in a young, healthy United States veteran with repeat triatomine exposures in Arizona. Military personnel and Arizona residents should be aware of their Chagas disease transmission risks.

Advances, pitfalls, and challenges in triatomine genomics.

Chagas' disease remains one of the most neglected vector-borne infections in the Americas, with transmission shaped by the extraordinary ecological and evolutionary diversity of triatomine bugs. Unlike mosquitoes and ticks, whose genomic resources now guide functional studies and control strategies, triatomines have long remained underexplored. Recent advances in long-read sequencing and chromosome-level assemblies are beginning to change this landscape, enabling investigation of key traits such as domiciliation, dispersal, feeding behavior, and insecticide resistance. Yet critical gaps persis

[Current situation with chagas disease vector control in the Americas].

This article identifies and describes various epidemiological aspects in the natural transmission of Chagas disease in the Americas. It also examines the relative importance of the principal vector species in the disease's transmission and the control levels that are feasible in each instance. Estimations of the population at risk, number of infected cases, and number of chronic cases are presented. Prospects for control are discussed on the basis of past results to predict the expected results with introduced species like Triatoma infestans in the Southern Cone and Rhodnius prolixus in Centra

Differentiation smelling footprints of the Chagas disease vector using an electronic nose based on artificial intelligence algorithms.

The present study aims to disclose the design of an electronic nose capable of learning and differentiating semiochemical signals from insects usable to identify species that transmit Chagas disease. The proposed device used different non-specific resistor gas sensors integrated into a system of artificial intelligence models. To validate the nose, we used eight insect species of the Triatominae subfamily and one population that was a natural carrier of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Also, the discriminatory capacity of distant species was tested with other insects like Aedes aegypti (arbovir

High-resolution melting (HRM) of the cytochrome B gene: a powerful approach to identify blood-meal sources in Chagas disease Vectors.

Methods to determine blood-meal sources of hematophagous Triatominae bugs (Chagas disease vectors) are serological or based on PCR employing species-specific primers or heteroduplex analysis, but these are expensive, inaccurate, or problematic when the insect has fed on more than one species. To solve those problems, we developed a technique based on HRM analysis of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome B (Cyt b). This technique recognized 14 species involved in several ecoepidemiological cycles of the transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi and it was suitable with DNA extracted from intestinal content

Phytophagous, blood-suckers or predators? Automated identification of Chagas disease vectors and similar bugs using convolutional neural network algorithms.

Correct identification of blood-sucking bugs, such as triatomines, is important because they are vectors of Chagas' disease. Identifying these insects is often difficult for non-specialists. Deep learning is emerging as a solution for automated identification. This study evaluates the performance of three convolutional neural networks (CNNs) - AlexNet, MobileNetV2 and ResNet-50 - to identify bugs categorized by their feeding habits: 'blood-suckers', 'phytophagous' and 'predators'. A dataset of 707 dorsal view pictures was divided into training, validation, and test subsets (70 %, 10 %, and 20

Landscape modeling as a surveillance strategy for Trypanosoma cruzi vectors in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi in nature is closely linked to the ecology of its vectors, the triatomine insects. Although the geographic distribution of these species is relatively well-known, understanding the characteristics that define their ecological niche and how human interventions alter these conditions remains limited. Rapid and intense environmental changes, driven by activities such as agricultural expansion, raise important questions about how vector ecology is being transformed and the new implications for Chagas disease transmission risk. METHODS: This study

Live triatomine bug, vector of Trypanosoma cruzi , found engorged in Lisbon hotel room: A first for Portugal and for Europe.

Triatomine bugs are blood feeding insects that transmit the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. The bugs are found primarily in the Americas with a few species in Asia and Africa. Here, we report the first case of a live triatomine bug in Europe, found in a Lisbon hotel room. In August 2025 the hotel room occupants discovered a triatomine bug perched on the headboard of their bed. Upon capture, bright red blood emerged from the bug; the occupants suspected that it had bitten them during the night. The bug was identified morphologically as triatomine species Hospesneo

Reduced Biodiversity is Linked to Higher Triatomine Occupancy: Chagas Disease Implications.

The hypothetical link between a reduction in biodiversity and increased zoonotic diseases remains debatable. We tested this by utilising remote vegetation density and protected areas (PAs) as proxies for biodiversity and examined their relationship with triatomine richness and occupancy. Triatomine bugs serve as the primary vector for Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. Although no link was found between triatomine species richness and vegetation, triatomine occupancy was lower within PAs than outside. Consequently, our findings suggest that reduced biodiversity may lead

Genetic Identification of Brazilian Mammalian Hosts of Trypanosoma cruzi: Improving Blood Meal Source Discrimination in Vector-Borne Transmission.

The detection of food sources of blood-sucking vectors is essential for a better understanding of the hosts, reservoirs, and other fauna that participate in the transmission web of hemoparasites. The molecular identification of triatomine blood meal sources (BMSs) has been shown to be highly sensitive and taxonomically specific when compared to the immunological method. The application of molecular cloning makes it possible to identify multiple BMS species and/or different individuals/haplotypes of the same vertebrate species in a single triatomine specimen. In Brazil, the molecular detection

Trypanosoma cruzi: comparative studies of infectivity of parasites ingested by Triatoma infestans and those present in their feces.

Artificial feeding of the insects with whole blood containing trypomastigotes resulted in triatome infection; the parasites were present in the host feces after 15--30 days and, when inoculated into mice, elicited parasitemia in 100% of the cases and deaths in 20--70%. This mortality indicates a reduction of the original infective capacity of the bloodstream form, which kills 100% of the mice even when inoculated with a single trypomastigote. When triatomes were fed whole normal mouse blood containing culture forms of low infective capacity (TulL), mice inoculated with feces containing the pro

Naturally occurring trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease) in dogs.

Nine fatal cases of canine American trypanosomiasis (Chagas' disease) were encountered from November, 1972, through November, 1975. Of the 9 cases, 7 occurred in dogs from 5 central Texas counties, and all but one case was diagnosed during the months of September, October, or November. The source of infection was discovered in only one case--that being a doghouse heavily infested with Triatoma lectularius occulta. Each of 6 bugs collected had infective forms of the protozoan, Trypanosoma cruzi. Trypanosomiasis usually is not considered in the differential clinical diagnosis of cardiac dysfunct

Phylogenetic description of Trypanosoma cruzi isolates from Dipetalogaster maxima: Occurrence of TcI, TcIV, and TcIV-USA.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the parasite responsible for Chagas disease. The parasite has been classified into six taxonomic assemblages: TcI-TcVI and TcBat (aka Discrete Typing Units or Near-Clades). No studies have focused on describing the genetic diversity of T. cruzi in the northwestern region of Mexico. Within the Baja California peninsula lives Dipetalogaster maxima, the largest vector species for CD. The study aimed to describe the genetic diversity of T. cruzi within D. maxima. A total of three Discrete Typing Units (DTUs) were found (TcI, TcIV, and TcIV-USA). TcI was the predominant DTU fou

Oral transmission of Chagas disease.

Chagas disease is now an active disease in the urban centers of countries of nonendemicity and endemicity because of congenital and blood and/or organ transplantation transmissions and the reactivation of the chronic disease in smaller scale than vectorial transmission, reported as controlled in countries of endemicity. Oral transmission of Chagas disease has emerged in unpredictable situations in the Amazon region and, more rarely, in areas of nonendemicity where the domiciliary triatomine cycle was under control because of exposition of the food to infected triatomine and contaminated secret

Community participation in Chagas disease vector surveillance: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Vector control has substantially reduced Chagas disease (ChD) incidence. However, transmission by household-reinfesting triatomines persists, suggesting that entomological surveillance should play a crucial role in the long-term interruption of transmission. Yet, infestation foci become smaller and harder to detect as vector control proceeds, and highly sensitive surveillance methods are needed. Community participation (CP) and vector-detection devices (VDDs) are both thought to enhance surveillance, but this remains to be thoroughly assessed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We se
