Mixed infection, Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi, in a wild boar hunted in the Province of Cáceres (Spain).

The etiological agents of human trichinellosis are distributed worldwide in domestic and wild animals. In Spain, two morphologically indistinguishable Trichinella species have been described--Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi--that are perpetuated in both domestic and sylvatic cycles. The present work reports a double natural infection involving these species in a wild boar killed by hunters in the Province of Cáceres, Spain. After artificial digestion of the boar's muscles, nine larvae/g were collected. These were characterized by multiplex-PCR and Western-blotting using the Trichi

Prevalence of Trichinella spp. in North Spain wild fauna and new variety of Trichinella britovi identification.

Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella britovi live in apparent sympatry among wild fauna of the Iberian Peninsula. In the present study 105 Trichinella isolates from wild mammals were typed by inter-sequence simple repeat PCR (ISSR-PCR). All isolates identified as T. spiralis were indistinguishable from the ISS48 reference strain. Among those belonging to T. britovi, four variations were clearly distinguishable; two of them, ISS11 C-76 and ISS86 MON, had been previously detected while the ISS2 reference strain and Trichinella Rioja 3, (MVUL/SP/02/R3) had not been reported before. The newly dist

[Comparison of numbers of active lymphocytes B in spleen of mice infected with Trichinella pseudospiralis or Trichinella spiralis].

The experiments were performed on BALB/c mice (male, 20 g body weight). The mice were infected 23 days before the experiment by peroral application of about 100 Trichinella larves. Control group consisted of not infected mice. The number of lymphocytes B producing antibodies was determined according to Cunningham and Szenberg. Five days before performance of the test, all mice were immunized by peritoneal application of sheep erythrocyte suspension. After that the mice were sacrificed, spleen was isolated and cellular suspension was prepared which was then introduced to the chamber in presence

Differentiation of Trichinella spiralis spiralis and Trichinella spiralis nativa based on resistance to low temperature refrigeration.

A refrigeration technique to differentiate the subspecies, Trichinella spiralis spiralis and T. spiralis nativa is described. Trichinella spiralis spiralis trichinae in musculature do not survive 48 hours post-refrigeration at -32 degrees C while T. spiralis nativa will survive 72 hours and longer at the same temperature.

Early Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella nativa infections induce similar gene expression profiles in rat jejunal mucosa.

Trichinella spiralis causes a significantly higher parasite burden in rat muscle than Trichinella nativa. To assess whether the difference in infectivity is due to the early intestinal response, we analyzed gene expression changes in the rat jejunum during Trichinella infection with a whole-genome microarray. The rats were euthanized on day five of infection, and their jejunal mucosa was sampled for microarray analysis. In addition, intestinal histology and hematology were examined. Against our expectations, the gene expression changes were similar in both T.nativa- and T. spiralis-infected gr

[The effect of an invasion by Trichinella spiralis and Trichinella pseudospiralis on the ultrastructure of skeletal muscle tissue in the white mouse].

The ultrastructure of striated muscular tissue was studied in experiments with three groups of white mice: those infected with T. spiralis, T. pseudospiralis, and in those uninfected (controls). There was a heterogeneity of changes in the striated muscular tissue during 35-day infection. Deep damages to the contractile, trophic, energetic, supporting, and membranous apparatuses of muscle fibers are responsible for subcellular structural changes. At the same time compensatory and adaptative processes that reflect the hyperfunction of musculoskeletal tissue develop. Generally, T. spiralis causes

Immunity to Trichinella spiralis muscle infection.

Trichinella spiralis larvae establish chronic infections in skeletal muscles of immunocompetent hosts. Muscle infection is crucial to transmission and survival of the parasite in nature. Chronic infections by this highly immunogenic parasite are associated with modulation or escape from potentially destructive immune responses. This review summarizes our current knowledge of immunity to muscle infection with T. spiralis.

Molecular identification of Korean Trichinella isolates.

Muscle larvae of Trichinella isolates from two outbreaks in Korea were analyzed by a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and multiple-PCR. All of the muscle larvae showed a band similar to that of T. spiralis larvae of the reference strain. The two Korean Trichinella isolates (isolate code ISS623 and ISS1078) might be classifiable to Trichinella spiralis.

Trichinella nativa in sylvatic wild boars.

Of 17 Trichinella isolates from domestic pigs and wild boars (Sus scrofa) in regions where Trichinella nativa is widespread among sylvatic animals, two wild boars from Estonia were found to be naturally infected with this Trichinella species. The other 15 animals were infected with Trichinella spiralis. Trichinella nativa is tolerant to freezing when in the muscles of carnivores. The biological characteristics and temperature tolerance of this species in swine need to be further investigated if pork is certified for consumption following freezing.

Trichinella spiralis: immunity, ecology, and evolution.

Parasites exploit the environment provided by their hosts in the same way that free-living animals exploit their physical and biotic environments. There is, however, 1 important difference: the host environment can respond adaptively to infection in ways that may be disadvantageous to the parasite. Immunity provides the most effective adaptive host response and exerts a major selective pressure in parasite evolution. Among parasites many ways of maintaining the ability to exploit the host in the face of adaptive responses have evolved; such responses additionally may promote survival by enhanc

Trichinella spiralis infection--United States, 1990.

Since 1947, when the Public Health Service began to record statistics on trichinosis, the number of cases reported by state health departments each year has declined: in the late 1940s, health departments reported an average of 400 cases and 10-15 deaths each year; from 1982 through 1986, the number declined to an average of 57 per year (Figure 1) and a total of three deaths (1,2). Although this trend reflects a decline in the number of cases related to commercially purchased pork, recent outbreaks of trichinosis in Iowa and Virginia emphasize the continuing need for education about the danger

Experimental Trichinella spiralis infection in sheep.

During susceptibility studies of non-specific hosts, three merino sheep were infected with 3000, 5000 or 7000 Trichinella spiralis larvae by gavage. Clinical, physiological and serological parameters were assessed during the experiment. On the 152nd day p.i., animals were necropsied and, using artificial digestion methods, numbers of Trichinella larvae in muscle tissues were determined. The most infected parts were masseters with 3122 larvae g-1 muscle, 5526 larvae g-1 muscle and 4058 larvae g-1 muscle and diaphragms with 2778 larvae g-1 muscle, 2725 larvae g-1 muscle and 2320 larvae g-1 muscl

[Demonstration of trichinella antibodies (author's transl)].

Serum samples of humans and animals with Trichinella infection of different duration and severity were analysed for Trichinella antibodies by four different serological methods. The indirect immunofluorescence test and the indirect haemagglutination test proved to be the most sensitive ones. Complement-fixation reaction gave the poorest results. In fresh Trichinella infections the heterologous antibody against cercaria of S. mansoni was more strongly developed than the homologous antibody which is effective in the microprecision test on Trichinella larvae. Although the animals deliberately inf

Trichinella spiralis: shaping the immune response.

The co-evolution of a wide range of helminth parasites and vertebrates represented a constant pressure on the host's immune system and a selective force for shaping the immune response. Modulation of the immune system by parasites is accomplished partly by dendritic cells. When exposed to helminth parasites or their products, dendritic cells do not become classically mature and are potent inducers of Th2 and regulatory responses. Treating animals with helminths (eggs, larvae, extracts) causes dampening or in some cases prevention of allergic or autoimmune diseases. Trichinella spiralis (T. spi

Sylvatic Trichinella spp. infection in Finland.

Although human infections caused by Trichinella sp. have not been reported in Finland for several decades and Trichinella sp. infection in pork has become virtually extinct in the last decade, sylvatic Trichinella spp. infection is still highly prevalent in Finland. Muscle digestion of 2,483 carnivorous wild animals from 9 host species during 1999-2005 showed 617 positive animals (24.8%). Molecular identification from 328 larval isolates revealed 4 different endemic Trichinella species, i.e., T. nativa, T. spiralis, T. britovi, and T. pseudospiralis. Seven percent of the infected animals carri
