Extracts of Fusarium poae (NRRL 3287) grown either on sterile corn at 8 C or in Richards solution at room temperature were shown to have emetic activity in pigeons at nonlethal concentration under conditions of oral and intravenous administration. The causative agent was found to be T-2 toxin (3-hydroxy-4,15-diacetoxy-8-[3-methylbutyryloxy]-12,13-epoxy-Delta(9)-trichothecene). Oral and intravenous mean toxic dose values for this compound were found to be 0.72 and 0.15 mg/kg, respectively, as compared with an oral mean lethal dose of 2.75 mg/kg. The fact that T-2 toxin causes emesis at nonletha

Mycotoxicoses are usually a consideration in large animal species but can affect companion animals as well. Due to increasing interest and the ease of using rabbits as laboratory models, a growing number of published experimental studies discuss the effects of various mycotoxins on this species. However, the available evidence is fragmented and heterogeneous, and has not recently been collated in a review, to my knowledge. Although mycotoxicoses in rabbits are typically subclinical, clinical signs can include weight loss, anorexia, gastrointestinal disorders, stunted growth, reproductive abnor

Milk thistle-based dietary supplements have become increasingly popular. The extract from milk thistle (Silybum marianum) is often used for the treatment of liver diseases because of the presence of its active component, silymarin. However, the co-occurrence of toxic mycotoxins in these preparations is quite frequent as well. The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in composition of liver lipidome and other clinical characteristics of experimental mice fed by a high-fat methionine-choline deficient diet inducing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The mice were exposed to (i)

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a major mycotoxin contaminating grain-based feed, poses a severe threat to intestinal health. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, as a probiotic, is increasingly recognized for its positive impact on various aspects of animal health. However, the mechanism by which Lactiplantibacillus plantarum LP15-1 alleviates DON-induced intestinal injury remains unclear. In this study, six-week-old male mice were divided into control, DON group (2 mg/kg/day), and LP + DON group (108 CFU/day LP15-1 and 2 mg/kg/day DON). The experiment consisted of a 14-day pre-treatment with LP15-1, followe

The deoxynivalenol (DON)-contaminated feeds can impair chicken gut barrier function, disturb the balance of the intestinal microbiota, decrease chicken growth performance and cause major economic loss. With the aim of investigating the ameliorating effects of baicalin on broiler intestinal barrier damage and gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by DON, a total of 150 Arbor Acres broilers are used in the present study. The morphological damage to the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum caused by DON is reversed by treatment with different doses of baicalin, and the expression of tight junction proteins (Z

BACKGROUND: In the livestock feed industry, feed and feed raw materials are extremely susceptible to mycotoxin contamination. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the main risk factors for mycotoxin contamination in broiler feed and feedstuff, however, there is still little knowledge about this. Hence, the purpose of this study was to explore the toxicity effect of DON on the intestinal barrier and the microecological balance of the biota in broiler chickens.
RESULTS: In our present study, we compared the pathological scores of the small intestines of broilers on the 5th, 7th, and 10th day, and cho

OBJECTIVE: Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin produced by fungi of Fusarium spp. It causes vomiting, but also exerts immunosuppressive effects that may be seen at local level e. g. the urogenital tract, in which case these effects are of relevance for fertility. The presented report describes a DON-associated pathomorphological picture of the urogenital tract in conjunction with the associated microbiological colonization.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 19 genital tracts (vagina, cervix, uterus, oviducts and ovaries) including the urinary bladder (n = 15) from reproductively failed gilts a

Fusarium is one of the most important genera of plant-pathogenic fungi in the world and arguably the world's most important mycotoxin-producing genus. Fusarium species produce a staggering array of toxic metabolites that contribute to plant disease and mycotoxicoses in humans and other animals. A thorough understanding of the mycotoxin potential of individual species is crucial for assessing the toxicological risks associated with Fusarium diseases. There are thousands of reports of mycotoxin production by various species, and there have been numerous attempts to summarize them. These efforts

Back tuina massage and oral administration of astragalus are two methods used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to improve immune function. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of tuina and orally administered astragalus on immunosuppressed rabbits using proteomics technology. Additionally, we investigate the potential mechanism of action of astragalus components on immunosuppression using an integration of network pharmacology and molecular docking technology. The findings suggested that cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression is primarily mediated through signaling pathways

Fusarium species can produce mycotoxins, which can contaminate cereal-based food producing adverse effects for human and animal health. In recent years, the importance of Fusarium poae has increased within the Fusarium head blight complex. Fusarium poae is known to produce trichothecenes, especially nivalenol, a potent mycotoxin able to cause a variety of toxic effects. In this study, a specific primer pair was designed based on the tri7 gene to detect potential nivalenol-producing F. poae isolates. A total of 125 F. poae, four F. cerealis, two F. culmorum, one F. langsethiae, one F. sporotric

Mycotoxins are naturally occurring food toxins worldwide that can cause serious health effects. The measurement of mycotoxin biomarkers in biological fluids is needed to assess individuals' exposure. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of mycotoxins in the Qatari population. Serum samples from 412 adults and urinary samples from 559 adults were analyzed for the presence of mycotoxin biomarkers. Multimycotoxin approaches have been applied, using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry methods. Samples were further analyzed for the oxidative stress markers and compared with re

T-2 toxin, the most toxic of the trichothecenes, is widely found in grains and feeds, and its intake poses serious risks to the health of humans and animals. An important cytotoxicity mechanism of T-2 toxin is the production of excess free radicals, which in turn leads to oxidative stress. Betulinic acid (BA) has many biological activities, including antioxidant activity, which is a plant-derived pentacyclic triterpenoid. The protective effects and mechanisms of BA in blocking oxidative stress caused by acute exposure to T-2 toxin in the thymus of mice was studied. BA pretreatment reduced ROS

Pearl millet is an expanding crop in Brazil, used as a cover crop and destined for animal food. Fusarium species colonize the panicle and may cause head mold or compromise the safety of grains by producing mycotoxins. We collected samples of panicles from different producing regions of Brazil with and without signs of Fusarium infection to investigate which species are associated with panicles and their potential for producing mycotoxins. A total of 154 Fusarium isolates were obtained and assigned to three species complexes (SC) based on morphology. Fusarium incarnatum-equiseti SC was dominant

Deoxynivalenol (DON), a prevalent mycotoxin produced by Fusarium spp., represents a persistent threat to global food and feed safety. Two innovative strategies were developed herein for efficient DON detoxification. Coupling the genes encoding the aldo-keto reductase AKR13B2 and the pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent DON dehydrogenase DepA using a flexible linker enabled rational engineering of the bifunctional fusion enzyme BGA (AKR13B2-[GGGGS]2-DepA). This design facilitated proximity-enhanced sequential conversion of DON to 3-keto-DON and the markedly less toxic 3-epi-DON. BGA exhibited sig

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a prevalent foodborne mycotoxin, and its toxicity is closely associated with gut-liver axis dysfunction. However, the role of antibiotic-induced gut microbiome modulation in DON-induced intestinal and hepatic injury remains unclear. In this study, mice were exposed to DON with or without antibiotic (ABX) treatment for 4 weeks to investigate the contribution of gut microbiome to DON toxicity. DON exposure significantly impaired growth performance and induced hepatic injury, as evidenced by increased serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST),

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a foodborne mycotoxin produced by Fusarium molds that commonly infect cereal grains. It is a potent protein synthesis inhibitor that can significantly impact humans' gastrointestinal, immune, and nervous systems and can alter the microbiome landscape. Low-dose, chronic exposure to DON has been found to stimulate the immune system, inhibit protein synthesis, and cause appetite suppression, potentially leading to growth failure in children. At higher doses, DON has been shown to cause immune suppression, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, headache, diarrhea, gastroenteriti

Experiments were performed on pentobarbital-anesthetized cats to test the hypothesis that hypovolemia rather than cardiac failure is responsible for the acute lethal toxicity of the trichothecene mycotoxin, T-2 toxin (T2T). Measurements were made on mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), arterial pulse pressure (PP), and heart rate (HR) in eight otherwise untreated cats given T2T (2 mg/kg iv) and in three cats similarly injected with T2T but then transfused with plasma and blood. The transfusions to their available extent significantly delayed or counteracted the development of mycotoxic shock (i

Deoxynivalenol (DON) is a mycotoxin that contaminates approximately 60% of food worldwide and can impair reproduction. Although puberty represents a critical window of susceptibility to toxic insults, the effects of DON exposure during this period remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the effects of DON on testicular structure, oxidative status, inflammatory responses, and sperm parameters in prepubertal and adult mice. Sixty mice were assigned to either a control diet or a DON-contaminated diet (10 mg/kg feed) and evaluated under two experimental regimens defined by developmental sta
