Two issues were examined regarding the trigeminal system in larval lampreys: (1) for normal animals, double labeling was used to confirm that the trigeminal system has a topological organization; (2) following trigeminal nerve root transections, double labeling was used to test whether the topological organization of the trigeminal system is restored. First, for normal animals, Alexa 488 dextran amine applied to the medial oral hood (anterior head) labeled trigeminal motoneurons (MNs) in the ventromedial part of the trigeminal motor nuclei (nVm) and axons of trigeminal sensory neurons (SNs) in

Wire knife-cuts lesioning the descending trigeminal tract and trigeminal sensory nuclear complex at the level of subnucleus interpolaris significantly elevated response latencies to noxious thermal stimuli applied to one perioral locus of facial skin. Group analyses of four other ipsilateral sites did not reveal significant effects. Medial cuts, extensively damaging the sensory nuclear complex as well as the tract, were more likely to produce significant elevations than were lateral cuts. These results suggest that tractotomy does not result in complete facial analgesia in the rat, and that th

This is the first report to be published on olfactory evoked potentials in patients with well-defined lesions of the central nervous system and the trigeminal nerve. Absence of olfactory evoked potentials is seen in post-central and parietotemporal lesions. The first peak of the so-called olfactory evoked twin potential is absent in lesions of the basal nuclei and sectioning of the trigeminal or ophthalmic nerve, whereas there is no second peak in subcortico-frontal and cortico-temporal lesions. Tumours of the corpus callosum and sectioning of the maxillary and mandibular nerves do not disturb

Mice were inoculated with herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 by gently scraping the skin of the nose with a fine needle. About 80% of the animals developed latent inapparent HSV infections in trigeminal ganglia. Virus was demonstrable for at least 6 months post inoculation (p.i.) by cocultivation of ganglionic tissue with GMK cells. Histologically, trigeminal ganglia revealed infiltrations of inflammatory cells even 6 months p.i. In addition, lesions occurred in the brainstem corresponding to the entry of trigeminal roots, trigeminal tracts and nuclei. Inflammatory cell infiltration, disruption

1. The intracranial and intraorbital course of the optic nerve is described concisely, the intracanicular one in full details. Apart from the wide and small sections of the optic canal, its axis opposite to the cranial planes, the coating of the canal and the adjacency to the paranasal sinuses and arteries are exactly described. 2. At the trigeminal nerve the trigeminal ganglion, its roots and also the mandibular nerve have great importance in the practical medicine considering thermo-coagulation or surgery of the trigeminal nerve. This segments and also the adjacency of the fifth nerve to the

As little information is available on the chemistry of synaptic transmission in trigeminal brain stem nuclei, an iontophoretic study was done on the effects of glutamate and substance P on single neurons in trigeminal nuclei oralis and caudalis in cats anesthetized with chloralose and paralyzed. The neurons were additionally studied for their responses to natural noxious and innocuous cutaneous and intraoral stimuli as well as to bipolar stimulation of the ipsilateral and contralateral canine tooth pulps, the exposed infraorbital and superior laryngeal nerves and forepaw. Glutamate excited all

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was used to identify parts of the presumptive neural pathway for gill cover erection, a behavioral display pattern performed by Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) during aggressive interactions. Motor, motor integration and sensory areas were identified in the medulla and mesencephalon. Motor neurons of the dilator operculi muscle, the effector muscle for gill cover erection, are located in the lateral and medial parts of the caudal trigeminal motor nucleus. Iontophoretic injections of HRP into the lateral trigeminal motor nucleus resulted in labeled cell bodi

According to a current theory about the pathogenesis of Bell's palsy, the motorfibers of the facial nerve are affected by a viral neuropathy, transmitted to the facial nerve via the axons of the chorda tympani nerve. We have used horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to test to what extent and under what conditions uptake and transport of macromolecules can take place from the tongue. When HRP was applied directly onto the mucosa, no labeling was observed. However, when applied to localized superficial lesions of the epithelium or injected into the tongue, HRP is transported retrogradely to the genicul

Our knowledge of the avian sensory trigeminal system has been largely restricted to the principal trigeminal nucleus (PrV) and its ascending projections to the forebrain. Studies addressing the cytoarchitecture and organization of afferent input to the sensory trigeminal complex, which includes both the PrV and the nuclei of the descending trigeminal tract (nTTD), have only been performed in pigeons and ducks. Here we extend such an analysis to a songbird, the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). We describe the cytoarchitecture of the sensory trigeminal complex, the patterns of calbindin-like a

Descending spinal projections were investigated in the turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans following injections of horseradish peroxidase and/or radioactive wheat germ agglutinin into the spinal cord at various levels. Using various planes of section the cells of origin in the brainstem, cerebellum, and diencephalon were characterized according to their size, dendritic tree, and precise location. Projections to levels as far caudal as the lumbar spinal cord were found to arise from medial and lateral rhombencephalic reticular fields, including the perihypoglossal complex, the nucleus raphe inferi

Imaging of the trigeminal nerve requires a thorough understanding of its anatomy and function, clinical symptoms related to malfunction, and its key pathologies. Because of the nerve's long course from the brainstem nuclei to the peripheral branches, MR imaging and CT studies have to cover a large anatomic area while providing high-resolution images. Although MR imaging has almost completely replaced CT as the diagnostic modality of choice for investigating trigeminal neuropathy, CT still plays a role in the assessment of skull base foramina and facial skeleton. In this article, the clinical,

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is characterized by intense and recurrent episodes of pain in the orofacial region, mainly affecting the second (V2) and third (V3) divisions of the trigeminal nerve. Recent studies suggest that TN may be associated with structural alterations in the limbic system, particularly the amygdala, a core region for the emotion-related network, involved in emotional aspects of pain and pain modulation. This study evaluated the volumetry of the amygdala and its nine nuclei in patients with TN compared to healthy controls. Structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) data were

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to localize the cell bodies of palisade endings that are associated with the myotendinous junctions of the extraocular muscles.
METHODS: Rhesus monkeys received tract-tracer injections (tetramethylrhodamine dextran [TMR-DA] or choleratoxin subunit B [CTB]) into the oculomotor and trochlear nuclei, which contain the motoneurons of extraocular muscles. All extraocular muscles were processed for the combined immunocytochemical detection of the tracer and SNAP-25 or synaptophysin for the visualization of the complete muscle innervation.
RESULTS: In all musc

Intra-axonal recording and horseradish peroxidase (HRP) injection techniques were employed to define the response properties of periodontal mechanoreceptive afferents originating from the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) and their morphological characteristics. The periodontal Vmes neurons were classified into two types: slowly adapting (SA) and fast adapting (FA) types. The central terminals of 7 SA and 4 FA afferents were recovered for detailed analyses. The whole profile of SA and FA neurons were unipolar in shape and their cell bodies were located in the dorsomedial parts of the Vme

Three aspects of trigeminal pain are considered: the peripheral mechanisms of pain from teeth and from the cornea, and the role of the trigeminal brainstem nuclei in pain. Pain is probably the only sensation that can be evoked by stimulation of dentin or dental pulp in man. Five nerve-endings enter dentinal tubules from the pulp but do not extend into the outer dentine, which is nevertheless sensitive. In teeth of limited growth in experimental animals, the dental pulp is supplied by A beta, A delta and C fibres and these are associated with two categories of receptor: one responds to cooling

The aim of this study was to investigate whether primary vestibular afferent fibers establish direct connections with the motor and sensory trigeminal system in the brainstem of the frog. The experiments were carried out on Rana esculenta. In anaesthetized animals the trigeminal and vestibular nerves were prepared, and their proximal stumps were labeled either with fluorescein binding dextran amine (trigeminal nerve) or tetramethylrhodamine dextran amine (vestibulocochlear nerve). With a confocal laser scanning microscope we could detect close connections between the vestibular fibers and bran

The trigeminocerebellar artery (TCA) is a unique branch of the basilar artery supplying both the trigeminal nerve root and the cerebellar hemisphere. In this study, we describe and demonstrate the microanatomy of the TCA in 45 brainstems and discuss the neurological, neuroradiological and neurosurgical significance. This is the largest series of cadavers in the literature. The close relationship of the TCA to the trigeminal nerve root may have clinical implications including for the etiology of trigeminal neuralgia, thus the neurosurgeon must be aware of the vasculature of the trigeminal nerve

We have discovered novel transport properties of cholera toxin subunit b beyond well-known anterograde and retrograde axonal transport. Injection of 1500 microg of CTb intraperitoneally or intravenously in young adult mice resulted in generalized enhanced labeling of motor nuclei at all levels of the brain stem and spinal cord (oculomotor, trochlear, abducens, facial, trigeminal, vagal, hypoglossal, cervical, and lumbar). There was also extensive labeling of trigeminal and spinal primary afferent fibers, bulk labeling of the area postrema, and finally numerous labeled neurons in the periventri
