UNLABELLED: Our aim was to describe the referred pain patterns and size of areas of trigger points (TrPs) in the masticatory and neck-shoulder muscles of women with myofascial temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Twenty-five women with myofascial TMD and 25 healthy matched women participated. Bilateral temporalis, deep masseter, superficial masseter, sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezius and suboccipital muscles were examined for TrPs by an assessor blinded to the subjects' condition. TrPs were identified with manual palpation and categorized into active and latent according to proposed criteria.

BACKGROUND: Plantar heel pain (plantar fasciitis) is one of the most common musculoskeletal pathologies of the foot. Plantar heel pain can be managed with dry needling and/or injection of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) however the evidence for its effectiveness is uncertain. Therefore, we aimed to systematically review the current evidence for the effectiveness of dry needling and/or injections of MTrPs associated with plantar heel pain.
METHODS: We searched specific electronic databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, AMED, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus and AMI) in April 2010 to identify randomised and non-rando

OBJECTIVE: Referred pain and pain characteristics evoked from the extensor carpi radialis brevis, extensor carpi radialis longus, extensor digitorum communis, and brachioradialis muscles was investigated in 20 patients with lateral epicondylalgia (LE) and 20-matched controls.
METHODS: Both groups were examined for the presence of myofascial trigger points (TrPs) in a blinded fashion. The quality and location of the evoked referred pain, and the pressure pain threshold (PPT) at the lateral epicondyle on the right upper extremity (symptomatic side in patients, and dominant-side on controls) wer

To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of myofascial trigger point acupuncture combined with gabapentinoids compared with gabapentinoid therapy alone in patients with postherpetic neuralgia, and to identify clinical factors influencing treatment response. A total of 494 patients with postherpetic neuralgia were randomly assigned to receive either gabapentinoids alone (control group, n = 247) or combined myofascial trigger point acupuncture and gabapentinoids (experimental group, n = 247). Pain intensity was assessed using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) at baseline, week 3, and week 6, and chan

Background/Objectives: Muscle tissues are a common source of symptoms related to low back pain (LBP), with myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) being a significant contributor. Since previous meta-analyses support interventions targeting MTrPs for reducing pain and improving functional disability in patients with LBP, this review aimed to synthesize current knowledge on the prevalence of MTrPs in LBP patients. Methods: To conduct this systematic review, data were collected from PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science. Published articles at any time up to February 2025 that comprised descriptive, obs

Trigger point dry needling (TrpDN) has emerged as a promising intervention for the treatment of myofascial pain. This involves insertion of a sterile filament needle directly into the trigger point (Trp), with the aim of eliciting a local twitch response (LTR). This sudden, involuntary contraction of the muscle fibers confirms the breakdown and success of TrpDN intervention. Not all LTRs are perceptible through visual observation or tactile sensation during the intervention. In search of noticeable LTR, clinicians perform Hong's technique (back-and-forth movements of needle in muscle). This re

BACKGROUND: Myofascial trigger points (TrPs) are hypersensitive points located in a tight band of muscle that, when palpated, produce not only local pain but also referred (distant) pain. The role of TrPs in patients with cervical dystonia (CD) has not been investigated.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the presence of TrPs in patients with isolated idiopathic CD and their association with pain.
METHODS: Thirty-one patients (74.2% women; age: 61.2 years, SD: 10.1 years) participated. TrPs were explored in the sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezius, splenius capitis, levator scapulae, anterior scalene, s

ObjectiveIt has been established that chronic neck pain following whiplash is associated with the phenomenon of central sensitization, in which injured and uninjured parts of the body exhibit lowered pain thresholds due to an alteration in central pain processing. it has furthermore been hypothesized that peripheral sources of nociception in the muscles may perpetuate central sensitization in chronic whiplash. the hypothesis explored in the present study was whether myofascial trigger points serve as a modulator of central sensitization in subjects with chronic neck pain.DesignControlled case

OBJECTIVES: Myofascial pain syndromes due to trigger points (TrPs) are clinical entities, but more evidence is needed to evaluate TrP palpation. Chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) is the most prevalent chronic headache with high socioeconomic costs. The primary aim was to study whether TrP palpation can distinguish patients with headache patients from healthy controls.
DESIGN: Double-blinded, controlled design.
PATIENTS: Twenty patients with the diagnosis of CTTH, and 20 healthy age-matched and sex-matched control participants.
RESULTS: TrP palpation revealed more TrPs in patients (N=17)

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a very common condition, with an estimated lifetime prevalence of 85% in the general population. MPS is commonly underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to the lack of standardized diagnostic criteria and the symptoms' overlap with those of other musculoskeletal pain conditions. The most notable and bothersome feature of MPS is the presence of myofascial trigger points (MTrPs), hypersensitive areas of muscle commonly characterized as knots, nodules, or bumps that cause strain and pain with and oftentimes without stimulation. A low-risk, low-cost procedure, trigger

Torsade de pointes is a polymorphic form of ventricular tachycardia associated with prolongation of the QT interval, which may be either congenital or acquired. Etiologies for the acquired forms include drug effects, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, hypocalcemia, starvation, sick sinus syndrome, and atrioventricular block. We present a 76-year-old man with acute on chronic renal failure, hypocalcemia, on ciprofloxacin, and a prolonged QT interval with torsade de pointes triggered by hemodialysis. The QT prolongation was corrected by treating the hypocalcemia. Hypocalcemia and ciprofloxacin are kno

Trigger-point injection therapy is a common procedure in primary care medicine and emergency medicine and is generally considered safe. A 28-year-old woman experienced respiratory depression and hemiplegia after the injection of a superficial trapezius trigger point. The patient required emergency tracheal intubation for ventilatory support. Computed tomography of her head revealed pneumocephalus. She recovered fully over the course of 24 hours. Intrathecal injection during a trigger-point injection is a previously unreported complication of trigger-point injection therapy.

Myofascial pain syndromes, stemming from trigger points within the muscles, represent a prevalent cause of localized or generalized pain in clinical practice. They have a high incidence rate and currently lack specific curative methods. Trigger point injection therapy is the most popular clinical approach, focusing primarily on these trigger points. Injectable drugs like glucose, normal saline, local anesthetics, botulinum toxin type A, steroid preparations, and platelet-rich plasma are available for this purpose. This treatment is advantageous due to its low cost and minimally invasive nature
