Neoplasms are only sporadically reported in New World primates and rarely in owl monkeys (Aotus spp.), specifically. Previous reports of neoplasms in owl monkeys are primarily restricted to lymphoma induced by Herpesvirus saimiri infection, although other tumors in the central nervous, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, and endocrine systems have been sporadically reported. Herein, we describe 3 previously unreported neoplasms in owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae) including a pericardial mesothelioma in a 6-year-old male, a nephroblastoma in a 2-year-old male, and a cervical neoplasm with characteris

Gynaecological malignancies contribute significantly to cancer burden and have a higher rate of mortality and morbidity. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the pattern of gynaecological malignancies identified between January, 2000 and December, 2011, at the Centre for Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy (CENAR). At CENAR 5,072 female patients were registered with different malignancies, of which 632 cases were gynaecological malignancies. Ovarian cancer (47%) was the most common gynaecological malignancy, followed by cervical cancer (29%), uterine cancer (14%), vulvar and vagi

We tested 417 cases of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded normal or hyperplastic gynecologic tissues as well as neoplasms involving the gynecologic tract with a monoclonal antibody against CD10 (clone 56C6), with special emphasis on epithelial and epithelial-like structures and tumors. CD10 was always expressed in mesonephric remnants (mesonephric remnants of the uterine cervix, epoophoron, rete ovarii) and tumors (mesonephric adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix, tumors of wolffian origin of the broad ligament and ovary). CD10 was also positive in the syncytiotrophoblast, cytotrophoblast, and

The clinical and pathologic features of proliferations and tumors of intermediate trophoblast of the placental site are reviewed. These lesions include the exaggerated placental site reaction, which is a florid form of the process that occurs normally at the placental site; a hitherto undescribed variant of this lesion, which we have designated placental site nodule, and the neoplasm of intermediate trophoblast that has been termed placental site trophoblastic tumor. Problems encountered in distinguishing these lesions from one another and from nontrophoblastic lesions, particularly in endomet

Persistent trophoblast after ectopic pregnancy has been demonstrated at the surgical site or as peritoneal implants. A 37-year-old woman (G5P2) experienced persistently low levels of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) after surgical treatment for an interstitial pregnancy. Evaluation for persistent trophoblast, gestational trophoblastic neoplasm and heterophilic antibodies was negative. After 15 months without resolution, she elected for hysterectomy. We found four smooth, freely floating avascular cysts intraoperatively; pathological evaluation identified the cysts as trophoblastic tissu

INTRODUCTION: Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) encompasses a constellation of rare to common gynecologic conditions stemming from aberrant gestations with distinct genetic backgrounds and variable degrees of trophoblast proliferation of either neoplastic or non-neoplastic nature. GTD is categorized into hydatidiform moles and gestational trophoblastic neoplasms, and their clinical outcomes vary widely across different subtypes. Prompt and accurate diagnosis plays a pivotal role in the effective management and prognostication of patients. Short tandem repeats (STRs) are repetitive DNA se

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) a rare form of gestational trophoblastic disease, originates from intermediate trophoblastic cells and presents with nonspecific symptoms, complicating diagnosis. PSTT primarily affects women of childbearing age, but occurrences in perimenopausal women are exceptionally rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 54-year-old perimenopausal woman presenting with a two-month history of abnormal uterine bleeding. Clinical and imaging evaluations revealed an enlarged uterus and an intracavitary mass. Elevated β-hCG levels pro

UNLABELLED: Placental site nodules (PSNs) and epithelioid trophoblastic tumors (ETTs) respectively represent non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions of chorionic-type intermediate trophoblasts (ITs). Many patients with a PSN have a history of a cesarean section (CS) or therapeutic abortion. Recent evidence shows that a PSN may progress to an ETT. Herein, we describe a coexisting ETT and placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) intimately associated with PSNs in the post-cesarean lower uterine segment of a 41-year-old woman. The patient presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding 1 year after a ces

HLA expression by the trophoblast in invasive hydatidiform mole was analysed by immunoperoxidase staining. In the invading villi of an invasive mole, villous trophoblast, both syncytiotrophoblast and cytotrophoblast, failed to show a positive reaction for HLA-A, -B and -C and HLA-DR. By contrast, extravillous trophoblast showed an intense reaction for HLA-A, -B and -C. The distribution of HLA antigens in the invading villi was the same as in the non-invading villi, and the antigens were also indistinguishable from those noted in non-invasive hydatidiform moles. The histopathology of invasive m

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to evaluate the significance of persistent low-level human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) titers (usually <50 IU/L) in the absence of clinical evidence of pregnancy or gestational trophoblastic disease.
STUDY DESIGN: The USA hCG Reference Service consulted on 114 cases with persistent low levels of hCG; 51 had false-positive hCG results. The remaining 63 cases had real hCG results and are presented here.
RESULTS: Antecedent gestational events included hydatidiform mole (27), pregnancy (35), and gestational trophoblastic neoplasm (1). Forty of the 63 (64%) c

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is an extremely rare gestational trophoblastic neoplasm typically presenting as solid nodular lesions. We report an unusual case of ETT in a postmenopausal woman in her 50s that occurred 20 years after her last pregnancy. The tumor presented as a 19-cm multilocular cystic mass protruding from the cervix and was suspected to be infected. Initial histopathological examination revealed a solid proliferation of epithelioid to spindle cells expressing cytokeratins and p40, leading to a provisional diagnosis of sarcomatoid carcinoma. Comprehensive genomic profil

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a rare neoplasm originating from intermediate trophoblastic cells at the site of placental implantation. Its diagnosis poses significant challenges, particularly in distinguishing it from other gestational trophoblastic tumors, such as epithelioid trophoblastic tumors, choriocarcinoma, and placental site nodules, as well as the benign exaggerated placental site. We present a case of a 29-year-old woman with persistent gestational trophoblastic disease following a complete hydatidiform mole. A detailed review of the differential diagnoses is provided

The endometrial cavity may demonstrate various imaging manifestations such as normal, reactive, inflammatory, and benign and malignant neoplasms. We evaluated usual and unusual magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the uterine endometrial cavity, and described the diagnostic clues to differential diagnoses. Surgically proven pathologies of the uterine endometrial cavity were evaluated retrospectively with pathologic correlation. The pathologies included benign endometrial neoplasms such as endometrial hyperplasia and polyp, malignant endometrial neoplasms such as endometrial carcinoma a

Cutaneous metastases are rarely the initial manifestation of a previously undiagnosed malignancy and keratoacanthoma-like lesions are a notoriously unusual presentation pattern of cutaneous dissemination of a primary tumor. Herein, we report a 40-year-old woman presenting to our dermatology department with multiple keratoacanthoma-like scalp nodules. Subsequent investigation determined it to be the first manifestation of a disseminated endometrial epithelioid trophoblastic tumor, eventually causing the patient's death. Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor, a rare form of gestational trophoblastic d

Cell proliferative activity and the overaccumulation of P53 suppressor gene were evaluated in 26 cases of gestational trophoblastic disease and five cases with normal placentae. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded histological sections were used for immunohistochemistry, utilizing the avidin-biotin-peroxidase technique and antibodies to PCNA (proliferative cell nuclear antigen) and to P53 (product of suppressor gene). Positive reactions for PCNA were graded from 1+ to 3+ (1(+)-less than 10% of cells; 2(+)-10-50%; 3(+)-more than 50%). Eight of 10 cases of choriocarcinoma (80%) showed moderate to

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of low molecular mass polypeptide-2 (LMP2) and protein phosphatase 1A (PPM1A) in gestational trophoblastic disease and elucidate their predictive value in malignant transformation of hydatidiform mole.
METHODS: The expressions of LMP2 and PPM1A protein in 196 complete hydatidiform moles (in which 28 cases with malignant transformation), 7 invasive moles, 5 choriocarcinomas and 20 normal chorionic villus were detected with the method of EnVision immunohistochemistry. Their clinicopathologic data were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: LMP2 and PPM1A pr

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Pathologists should consider the differential diagnoses of placental chorioangioma, which encompass chorangiosis, chorangiomatosis, chorangiocarcinoma, intervillous thrombus, and placental infarct.
ABSTRACT: Chorioangiomas are rare non-trophoblastic vascular neoplasms of the placenta, occurring in approximately 1% of pregnancies. Large chorioangiomas (>4 cm) are infrequent and associated with an increased risk of pregnancy complications. There are limited reports in the literature regarding uncomplicated cases of large placental chorioangiomas.

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a heterogeneous group of lesions that are characterized by the abnormal proliferation of the trophoblast. Morphology, behavior and clinical significance vary tremendously and range from benign, non-neoplastic lesions that cause sometimes dysfunctional uterine bleeding to aggressive, highly, malignant tumors. The recently updated 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) Classification of Female Genital Tumors divides GTD in molar pregnancies/ hydatidiform moles, gestational trophoblastic neoplasms, tumor-like lesions and abnormal (nonmolar) villous lesions

The tumor associated antigen RCAS1 (receptor-binding cancer antigen expressed on SiSo cells) expressed with high frequency in various cancer and trophoblast cells, inhibits growth of estrogen receptor-expressing cells and induces apoptosis. Because previous reports demonstrated RCAS1 presence only by non-quantitative immunocytochemistry methods, we decided to use a Western blotting with anti-RCAS1 monoclonal antibodies for estimation of the relative content of the tumor-associated antigen. One hundred tissue samples were assayed (neoplasms, chronic inflammatory diseases, healthy tissues, troph

Molar pregnancy is a gestational trophoblastic disease that belongs to the category of precancerous lesions. On the other end of the spectrum are gestational trophoblastic neoplasms such as invasive mole, choriocarcinoma, placental site trophoblastic tumor and epithelioid trophoblastic tumor, which are considered malignant tumors. Based on defined histopathological criteria, molar pregnancy is divided into partial and complete hydatidiform mole. Especially in the case of early complete mole, the diagnosis can be quite challenging and often necessitates additional molecular or immunohistochemic
