The Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) has affected South American populations since ca. 200 years BCE. In Argentina, possible cases date from ca. 1000-1400 Common Era (CE). This paper describes the oldest (905-1030 CE) confirmed case of tuberculosis (TB) in a young adult male from Lomitas de Saujil (Tinogasta, Catamarca, Argentina). Osteolytic lesions on the bodies of the lower spine were macroscopically and radiographically identified. Bilateral new bone formation was seen on the visceral vertebral third of several ribs and in long bones, compatible with hypertrophic osteoarthropathy.

The coexistence of tuberculosis and other chronic diseases complicates disease management. Particularly, the lack of information on the difference in the prevalence of chronic diseases in tuberculosis based on age and gender can hinder the establishment of appropriate public health strategies. This study aimed to identify age- and gender-based differences in the prevalence of chronic diseases as comorbidities in patients with tuberculosis. An anonymized data source was established by linking the national health insurance claims data to the Korean national tuberculosis surveillance data from 20

We retrospectively evaluated the factors influencing the isolation of tubercle bacilli in 51 children under 14 years of age with pulmonary tuberculosis who were admitted to Yokohama City University Hospital from 1975 to 1998. Young children (0-6 years of age) with pulmonary tuberculosis were significantly less positive by smear and culture than elder children (7-14 years of age) with pulmonary tuberculosis. According to the Japanese Society for Tuberculosis classification of finding on chest X-ray film for pulmonary tuberculosis, the culture-positive patients with type II (cavitary lesions) we

BACKGROUND: The ability of medical residents training at U.S. urban medical centers to diagnose and manage tuberculosis cases has important public health implications. We assessed medical resident knowledge about tuberculosis diagnosis and early management based on American Thoracic Society guidelines.
METHODS: A 20-question tuberculosis knowledge survey was administered to 131 medical residents during a single routinely scheduled teaching conference at four different urban medical centers in Baltimore and Philadelphia. Survey questions were divided into 5 different subject categories. Data w

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2013eng
Latent tuberculosis infection is an important problem for solid organ transplant recipients because of the frequency of its occurrence and its potential for reactivation. Because of the high mortality rate associated with active tuberculosis infections in transplant recipients, guidelines from the American Thoracic Society recommend treatment for latent tuberculosis in this population. However, the choice of treatments is often difficult because liver transplant recipients may be more sensitive to isoniazid hepatotoxicity, and rifampin has significant drug interactions with the calcineurin inh

The use of cannabis is embedded within many societies, mostly used by the young and widely perceived to be safe. Increasing concern regarding the potential for cannabis to cause mental health effects has dominated cannabis research and the potential adverse respiratory effects have received relatively little attention. Studies on cannabis are challenging and subject to confounding by concomitant use of tobacco and other social factors, and while many of the studies referred to in this review are beset by the difficulties inherent in undertaking epidemiological research of the effects of cannab

The fight against tuberculosis in the German Democratic Republic was performed from the very beginning as a task of the state and the society; it was developed according to the progress of economic possibilities and the epidemiological situation. The contribution of the community and of the social-economic development on tuberculosis epidemiology has proved to be decisively important factors in tuberculosis control. The specific methods applied in tuberculosis control in the course of more than 30 years have changed in their importance effectiveness and efficiency with the reduction of the tub

The rapid and reliable detection of pathogenic microorganisms is an important issue for the safety and security of our society. Here we describe the use of a sensitive, inexpensive, amperometric, phage-based biosensor for the detection of extremely low concentrations of Bacillus cereus and Mycobacterium smegmatis as models for Bacillus anthracis (the causative agent of anthrax) and for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (the causative agent of tuberculosis), respectively. The detection procedure developed here enabled the determination of bacteria at a low concentration of 10 viable cells/mL within 8

In the second half of the last century and under the influence of the European civilization, Serbia abandoned the conservative and patriarchal way of life and began to introduce a new, contemporary political, cultural and social spirit into the country. The development of these civilizing features was under the influence of young intelectuals who, as former scholarship holders of the Serbian government, were educated in many European countries. Among them, there was a group of physicians who returned to the country after having completed their education. They were carriers and holders of the c

Increased frequency of multidrug resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis results from inappropriate treatment and lack of patient compliance. The Center for Disease Control/American Thoracic Society (CDC/ATS) guidelines issued for the management of newly diagnosed cases of tuberculosis (TB) will not be totally effective regardless of adherence to the guidelines and patient cooperation. The long interim period between the diagnosis of TB and confirmation of antibiotic susceptibility contributes to the infection rate. Consequently, the use of an adjuvant that is known to inhibit all enco

Tuberculosis and Coronaviral disease-19 had a global impact in 2020 and still predominating, both infectious diseases similar to the lethal pandemics spread in one route, likely airborne transmission, the infected person could spread to healthy people. However, tuberculosis slightly varies from COVID-19. Though the primordial disease of the tuberculosis epidemic has had a vast impact on this society, besides the COVID-19 pandemic with other co-morbidities, conditions faced numerous complications. This review exemplified the impact of two lethal diseases in changing patient care, diagnostic iss

In Japan, a person who is 29 or younger, contacted a tuberculosis patient recently and judged to have received infection is the object of the chemoprophylaxis by the public expenditure. On the other hand, in ATS/CDC, they call chemoprophylaxis as the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection, and if there is a strong possibility that a person may appear tuberculosis, they start chemoprophylaxis, regardless of age. We usually prescribe isoniazid for latent tubercular infection. The period of prescription is at least 6 months, which is effective, but 9 months is more desirable. Recently, in the

Millions of people worldwide have sickened and died from tuberculosis in recent centuries. Yet for most of human existence, the impact of tuberculosis on society is largely unknown. It is, indeed, unknowable without methods suitable for estimating disease prevalence in skeletal samples. Here such a procedure is applied to medieval and early modern Danish skeletons, and it shows how disease prevalence varied with differences in socioeconomic conditions. The approach is based on sensitivity and specificity estimates from modern skeletons. To augment our understanding of tuberculosis in Danish hi

Within a 2 month period 131 Ethiopian immigrants were admitted for treatment at a general hospital in Jerusalem. There were 52 patients with malaria, 13 with typhoid fever, 24 with pneumonia, seven with tuberculosis, nine with shigella and 11 with campylobacter. Over three-quarters of these patients were anaemic. In the majority of cases anaemia was normocytic and was most probably secondary to malaria and other intercurrent infections. The prevalence of diffuse non-toxic goitre was 7% in children and 19% in adults with a male to female ratio of 4:13. A positive rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test
