A 38-year-old man presented at the first-aid department complaining of fever, general malaise and a painful left groin. The complaints had started shortly after an active holiday in Finland. Physical examination showed enlarged left sided inguinal lymph nodes and a marked eschar on the left lower leg. In terms of differential diagnosis a Rickettsia or a tularemia infection were considered. The pathogen for tularemia, Francisella tularensis subspecies holarctica, was isolated in wound discharge from the patient. Serology also indicated infection with F. tularensis. The patient was treated at ho

OBJECTIVE: This study had for aim to determine whether the epidemiologic features of animal and human tularemia observed in France could explain its re-emergence since 1993.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was made of outbreaks in animals and human cases and contamination.
RESULTS: Twenty to sixty animal outbreaks were recorded every year but the number of cases was under-estimated. This indicates an increase in animal cases. Human cases or contaminations were associated with areas where animal cases had been recorded, except for a few cases more difficult to explain. Several fa

Tularemia as a potential biological weapon is of great concern because F. tularensis is a hardy organism that can be spread with a small inoculum. In addition, tularemia can be contracted through nature, predominately in rural areas. This disease can be spread by a wide variety of animals and can range from skin lesions to multi-organ involvement. The severity varies with amount of inocula, the virulence of the bacterium, and the port of entry. Exposure to aerosolized forms of F. tularensis, the major concern with bioterroism, can rapidly lead to respiratory failure and death. Untreated, other

Tularemia is an arthropod-borne infectious disease caused by Francisella tularensis, a gram-negative microorganism that normally resides in a wide range of wild and domestic animals. The disease is characterized by a sudden onset with high fever, headache, malaise, chills, myalgia, and arthralgia. A short time after exposure, an inflamed and ulcerated lesion rapidly appears at the site of entry. A regional lymphadenopathy follows the cutaneous presentation. Cultures from the lesions or blood generally give negative results. Histopathologic examination reveals either a nonspecific inflammatory

An endemic area of tularemia and field fever was submitted to a complex surveillance over a period of more than 10 years. In 1977 an epizootic outbreak of tularemia appeared in all four localities studied. The infection rate in small mammals exceeded 10%. F. tularensis was isolated also from different species of ectoparasites. During 1978 the epizootic stopped in 3 foci, but continued to spread in one. Rodenticides (zinc phosphide) were therefore applied in this focus twice annually for 2 1/2 years. Since 1978, tularemia infections disappeared in small mammals as well as in man. The applicatio

OBJECTIVE: To learn the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of veterinarians and technicians in Kansas regarding the occupational risk of tularemia, personal protection, patient diagnosis and management, zoonotic risk communication, and public health reporting.
METHODS: Kansas veterinarians and technicians serving cats and dogs completed an online survey between June and September 2024.
RESULTS: The survey was completed by 109 veterinarians and 19 technicians. Forty-three percent (47 of 109) of veterinarians reported diagnosing tularemia in cats and 13% (14 of 109) in dogs. Seven percent (8

Tularemia is a zoonotic infection caused by Francisella tularensis (F. tularensis). Although tularemia has historically been considered rare in Denmark, increasing numbers of diagnosed cases and recent seroepidemiological data suggest that the infection is increasingly recognized and may be more widespread than previously appreciated. This paper describes two pediatric cases presenting with persistent fever, punched-out inoculation ulcer (eschar) and local (inguinal)lymphadenitis, initially misdiagnosed as a common bacterial soft tissue infection. Both cases highlight delayed diagnosis, lack o

This report highlights an uncommon presentation of tularemia in a high-risk pediatric patient to increase awareness and broaden the differential diagnosis among clinicians. A previously healthy eight-year-old female presented to the emergency department multiple times within two weeks with nonspecific flu-like symptoms, worsening purulent conjunctival injection, fever, and left-sided facial swelling. She was initially diagnosed with several conditions, including corneal abrasion, preseptal cellulitis, and dacryocystitis, and was treated with antibiotics without symptom resolution. Upon admissi

Francisella tularensis is a facultative intracellular bacterial pathogen that affects both humans and animals. It was developed into a biological warfare weapon as a result. In this article, the current status of tularemia vaccine development is presented. A live-attenuated vaccine that was designed over 50 years ago using the less virulent F. tularensis subspecies holarctica is the only prophylactic currently available, but it has not been approved for use in humans or animals. Other promising live, killed, and subunit vaccine candidates have recently been developed and tested in animal model

Tularemia is a zoonotic disease caused by Francisella tularensis, a highly virulent gram-negative coccobacillus. Oropharyngeal tularemia, one of the clinical subtypes, is the most common clinical form of the disease in Eastern Europe, including Turkey. This clinical form affects mostly the head and neck region and the most common complaints of patients are mass in the neck, sore throat, and fever. This form of tularemia may be confused with tonsillitis, pharyngitis, or cervical lymphadenitis caused by other microbial agents due to the nonspecific clinical and laboratory features. In this study

Tetracyclines for tularemia have been associated with higher failure rates. There were 48 cases of tularemia at the University of Missouri between 1988 and 2015. We retrospectively analyzed 17 patients with tularemia who were successfully treated with tetracyclines, and 9 of these patients also underwent aspiration or incision and drainage.

Tularemia, also known as "rabbit fever," is a zoonosis caused by the facultative intracellular, gram-negative bacterium Francisella tularensis. Infection occurs through contact with infected animals (often hares), arthropod vectors (such as ticks or deer flies), inhalation of contaminated dust or through contaminated food and water. In this review, we would like to provide an overview of the current epidemiological situation in Germany using published studies and case reports, an analysis of recent surveillance data and our own experience from the laboratory diagnostics, and investigation of c

A pregnant woman who had oropharyngeal tularemia underwent treatment with azithromycin and lymph node resection and recovered without obstetrical complication or infection in the child. Azithromycin represents a first-line treatment option for tularemia during pregnancy in regions where the infecting strains of Francisella tularensis have no natural resistance to macrolides.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 3-year-old female squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus sciureus) was examined because of sudden onset of lethargy and fever.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: On initial examination, the monkey was weak and febrile and had petechiae on both thoracic limbs. Following collection, blood samples were slow to clot. During the next week, the monkey developed anemia and thrombocytopenia; Francisella tularensis was isolated from blood samples.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: Treatment with gentamicin resulted in the monkey's gradual return to health, but inguinal lymphadenopathy developed after drug admini

The subjects of the study were snowy owl castings (611 samples), polar fox litters (148 samples), and water samples of outdoor tundra water reservoirs. Tularemia antigen was sought in the castings and litters by the antibody neutralization test. The water was examined by bioassays. Tularemia antigen was annually detected in the study samples. Epizootically active autonomous natural foci of tundra-type tularemia were ascertained to continue to exist on the Wrangel island. The major vectors of the causative agent of tularemia were two types of lemmings (Siberian lemming and Vinogradov's one). Th

Tularemia is an infectious disease that continues to occur sporadically and in epidemics in the United States. It is characterized as an acute febrile illness with constitutional symptoms associated with skin, glandular, respiratory, or gastrointestinal involvement. Tularemia usually can be treated effectively with streptomycin. Relapse most often occurs when patients are treated with bacteriostatic agents such as chloramphenicol or tetracycline. We present a case of ulceroglandular tularemia distinguished by its relapse after initial streptomycin/doxycycline therapy and subsequent slow respon
