The ecology of Colorado tick fever in Rocky Mountain National Park in 1974. II. Infection in small mammals.

Field studies of Colorado tick fever (CTF) in small mammals in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) in 1974 established that Eutamias minimus and Spermophilus lateralis were the most important hosts for CTF virus and were the source of virus for immature stages of the tick vector, Dermacentor andersoni. Other species (Peromyscus maniculatus, Spermophilus richardsonii, Eutamias umbrinus) are secondary hosts. The intensity of viral activity in rodents varied greatly from locality to locality. Highest rodent infection rates were found to occur in the Moraine Park area of RMNP. Lowest infection rat

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in zoo and domestic animals in Jiangxi Province, China.

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic protozoan parasite that infects a wide range of warm-blooded animals throughout the world. In the present study, antibodies to T. gondii were determined using a commercial indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test in wild animals in a zoo. Three of 11 giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis) (27%), 1 of 5 wolves (Canis lupus laniger) (20%), 1 of 6 hippopotamuses (Hippopotamus amphibious) (17%), and 2 of 9 tundra swans (Cygnus columbianus) (22%) were found to be positive. No antibodies were detected in leopards (Panthera pardus), wild geese (Anser cygnoides), and Eastern gre

Hepatic alveolar echinococcosis simulating metastatic malignancy.

Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by infection with tiny tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus. Echinococcosis is classified as either cystic echinococcosis or alveolar echinococcosis. The common form is a zoonosis from goats and sheep that tends to cause liver lesions. The larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis causes alveolar echinococcosis/alveolar hydatid disease. It is a zoonosis with field mice and tundra voles as intermediate and wild carnivores like foxes and wolves as definitive hosts. This zoonosis is highly uncommon compared to the other form known as cystic echinococc

Multiple Global Change Stressors Boost Soil Greenhouse Gas Emissions Worldwide.

Soil carbon greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are integral to climate security worldwide. Global change is known to impact soil GHG emissions; yet, the contribution of an increasing number of global change factors (GCFs) to the rates of carbon GHG emissions remains virtually unknown, challenging our capacity to forecast the trajectory of climate change. Here, we synthesize 1803 observations on soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes across 21 types of GCFs spanning a wide range of ecosystems (i.e., forests, grasslands, farmland, wetlands, tundras, and deserts) and found that an increasing number of GCFs will res

Additions to the aphid fauna of Wrangel Island due to climate change withbr />redescription of the oviparous female of Pterocomma groenlandicum Hille Ris Lambers, 1952 (Hemiptera, Aphidoidea).

The article contains new data on the Aphidoidea of Wrangel Island collected in 2015. Previously, at least four species were known. Two of them, Aphis polaris Stekolshchikov et Khruleva, 2014 and Metopolophium sabihae Prior, 1976, were regularly observed on the island in the 1980s and 1990s. Pterocomma groenlandicum Hille Ris Lambers, 1952 and Myzus (Nectarosiphon) polaris Hille Ris Lambers, 1952, were first collected in 2006. In 2015 three more species were found: Brachycaudus (Mordvilkomemor) rumexicolens (Patch, 1917), Cavariella aegopodii (Scopoli, 1763), and Pemphigus saliciradicis (Börner

[Spatial and temporal variations of the chromosomal inversion frequencies across the range of malaria mosquito Anopheles messeae Fall. (Culicidae) during the 40-year monitoring period].

The analysis of personal and published data on the frequency dynamics of chromosomal inversions within the range of Anopheles messeae obtained during the period from 1974 through 2014 is presented. The results showed that, in general, across the species range, during the 40 years of genetic monitoring, there was a steady (stationary) clinal distribution of inversions in the first decade (1974–1985). Then, over the period of five years (1986–1990), there was a considerable change in the inversion frequencies in favor of southwestern chromosomal variants (particularly strongly fixed in the Tomsk

The NASA ABoVE Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor full waveform LiDAR airborne surveys.

Arctic and boreal regions are experiencing rapid environmental changes that include thawing permafrost and increasing disturbances. The NASA Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) sought to better understand these changes through field, airborne, and remote sensing measurements. One key airborne instrument was the Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS), a wide-swath imaging laser altimeter system. LVIS conducted 32 flights during June-August periods of 2017 and 2019, capturing data across more than 91,000 km² of diverse Arctic and boreal ecosystems. The surface topography and vegetati

Filarial nematode (order: Spirurida) surveillance in urban habitats, in the city of Pécs (Hungary).

As part of the seasonal mosquito control activities in the city of Pécs (Baranya County, Hungary), a total of 1123 adult female mosquitoes belonging to 18 species (including the invasive species Aedes koreicus) were collected from human-inhabited areas, using CO2-baited traps, during two consecutive years. To survey the presence and prevalence of filarial parasites in these mosquitoes, we performed a molecular survey for filarial DNA, attempted by PCR using generic primers (COI), and followed by DNA sequencing. Filaroid nematode DNA was detected in 4% of investigated mosquito pools. Out of 410

First survey of the occurrence of duck enteritis virus (DEV) in free-ranging Polish water birds.

Duck plague (DP) caused by anatid herpesvirus 1, also called duck enteritis virus (DEV), presents one of the most important concerns in mass waterfowl production. Apart from geese and ducks, free-ranging water birds are the most notorious infection carriers. The epidemiology of DEV in Western Europe remains unknown. Therefore, it was reasonable to conduct a study on its occurrence using modern but simple real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Analysis of 132 field isolates showed the presence of DEV in 96 birds (72.7 %), and it was found predominantly in wild ducks (Anas plat

Positive soil priming effects are the rule at a global scale.

Priming effects of soil organic matter decomposition are critical to determine carbon budget and turnover in soil. Yet, the overall direction and intensity of soil priming remains under debate. A second-order meta-analysis was performed with 9296-paired observations from 363 primary studies to determine the intensity and general direction of priming effects depending on the compound type, nutrient availability, and ecosystem type. We found that fresh carbon inputs induced positive priming effects (+37%) in 97% of paired observations. Labile compounds induced larger priming effects (+73%) than

Molecular detection of vector-borne pathogens from mosquitoes collected in two zoological gardens in Germany.

In Germany, knowledge of disease agents transmitted by arthropods in zoological gardens is scarce. In the framework of ecological studies, mosquitoes were therefore collected in German zoological gardens and examined for mosquito-borne pathogen DNA and RNA. In total, 3840 mosquitoes were screened for filarial nematodes and three groups of viruses (orthobunyaviruses, flaviviruses, alphaviruses) while 405 mosquitoes were tested for avian malaria parasites. In addition to the filarial nematode species Dirofilaria repens (n = 1) and Setaria tundra (n = 8), Sindbis virus (n = 1) and the haemosporid

Phenotype-limited distributions: short-billed birds move away during times that prey bury deeply.

In our seasonal world, animals face a variety of environmental conditions in the course of the year. To cope with such seasonality, animals may be phenotypically flexible, but some phenotypic traits are fixed. If fixed phenotypic traits are functionally linked to resource use, then animals should redistribute in response to seasonally changing resources, leading to a 'phenotype-limited' distribution. Here, we examine this possibility for a shorebird, the bar-tailed godwit (Limosa lapponica; a long-billed and sexually dimorphic shorebird), that has to reach buried prey with a probing bill of fi

Sulfur and chlorine compounds in water bodies of the Pymvashor subarctic hydrothermal system.

The results of the study of the behavior of redox-dependent sulfur and chlorine compounds in sediments of water bodies of the Pymvashor natural boundary (PNB) located in the Bolshezemelskaya Tundra (the Polar Cis-Ural Region, Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russian Federation) are presented. Currently, the Pymvashor is the only known location in Continental Europe where hydrothermal springs function in the polar territories. Data on the quantitative characteristics of the geochemical parameters of bacterial sulfate reduction (reduced sulfur compounds, reactive iron forms, and organic matter) in the s

Are Large-Scale Differences in Temperature and Reindeer Management Regime Affecting the Quality of Reindeer's Summer Forage?

The chemical balance between essential nutrients and defense compounds in plants determines the quality of the forage available to herbivores and can be modified by both environmental conditions and herbivores themselves. We investigated whether climate and herbivory affect nutrient and defense compound concentrations across plant functional groups. Concentrations of nutrients-nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)-and defense compounds-silicon (Si) and phenolics (Ph)-were measured in plant samples from the locally most abundant species, collected in northern Norway across a gradient in summer temper

An integrative and multi-indicator approach for wildlife health applied to an endangered caribou herd.

Assessing wildlife health in remote regions requires a multi-faceted approach, which commonly involves convenient samplings and the need of identifying and targeting relevant and informative indicators. We applied a novel wildlife health framework and critically assessed the value of different indicators for understanding the health status and trends of an endangered tundra caribou population. Samples and data from the Dolphin and Union caribou herd were obtained between 2015 and 2021, from community-based surveillance programs and from captured animals. We documented and categorized indicator

Serological screening for tick-borne encephalitis virus in eight Norwegian herds of semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus).

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is found in Ixodes ricinus ticks throughout the area where viable tick populations exist. In Norway, TBEV is found in I. ricinus from the south coast until Brønnøy municipality in Nordland County and the range of the vector is expanding due to changes in climate, vegetation, host animals and environmental conditions. TBEV might thus have the potential to establish in new areas when I. ricinus expand its geographical distribution. At present, there is little knowledge on the status of the virus in high-altitude areas of inland regions in Norway. It has previ

Genomic Diversity and Population Structure of Semi-Domesticated Reindeer populations in Southern Norway and wild reindeer from Iceland.

Reindeer and caribou (Rangifer tarandus) play key ecological, cultural, and economical roles across Arctic and Subarctic regions. However, genome-wide patterns of genetic diversity and population structure in semi-domesticated reindeer from Norway remain insufficiently characterized. Here we generated a high-quality chromosome-level genome assembly (GCA_965153185.1) for Norwegian semi-domesticated Eurasian tundra reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). The genome spans 2.54 Gb, with a scaffold N50 of 75.6 Mb, 96.1% complete BUSCOs, and 39,855 predicted protein-coding genes. Using this reference
