PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate longitudinal thickness changes of the peripapillary tissues in tree shrew eyes with induced high myopia from juvenile age to early adulthood.
METHODS: Juvenile tree shrews were randomly assigned to either a control group (16 eyes, 8 animals) or a group with binocular -10 diopter (D) lens wear (18 eyes, 9 animals). Refraction, biometry, and optical coherence tomography scans centered on the optic nerve head (ONH) were obtained weekly for 19 weeks. Data were split into three temporal phases representing myopia onset (phase I, week 1), juveni

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains a major global health challenge, largely due to the absence of robust animal models that recapitulate this disease, hindering mechanistic studies and vaccine development. This study employed tree shrews to determine the molecular profiles of distinct liver cell populations following HCV infection.
METHODS: Tree shrews received intrahepatic injections of the HCV JFH1 strain and were analysed at two timepoints: 1 week post-inoculation (acute) and 111 weeks post-inoculation (long-term). Viral load was assessed up to 30 weeks. Liver pathology was assess

PURPOSE: In juvenile tree shrews, positioning a negative-power lens in front of an eye produces a hyperopic shift in refractive state and causes a compensatory increase in axial length over several days so that the eye is myopic when the lens is removed. During negative lens compensation, the scleral extracellular matrix is remodeled. A biomechanical property of the sclera, creep rate, increases; during recovery from induced myopia, the creep rate decreases below normal levels. Changes in glycosaminoglycan (GAG) levels, including those of hyaluronan, may participate in these changes in creep r

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease in the elderly. It has an increasing prevalence and a growing health burden. One of the limitations in studying AD is the lack of animal models that show features of Alzheimer's pathogenesis. The tree shrew has a much closer genetic affinity to primates than to rodents and has great potential to be used for research into aging and AD. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether tree shrews naturally develop cognitive impairment and major AD-like pathologies with increasing age. Pole-board and novel obj

The aim of this study was to induce type 2 diabetes in tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinensis). Streptozotocin (STZ), a glucosamine derivative of nitrosourea and preferentially toxic to pancreatic beta cells, has been commonly used to induce type 1 and 2 diabetes in experimental animals. Tree shrews were treated with different low doses of STZ (60, 70, and 80 mg/kg), with six control tree shrews receiving citrate buffer. After STZ injection, tree shrews displayed increased fasting blood and urine glucose, impaired oral glucose tolerance test, and disturbed lipids metabolism and renal function.

Cooperation is common in nature and is pivotal to the development of human society. However, the details of how and why cooperation evolved remain poorly understood. Cross-species investigation of cooperation may help to elucidate the evolution of cooperative strategies. Thus, we design an automated cooperative behavioral paradigm and quantitatively examine the cooperative abilities and strategies of mice, rats, and tree shrews. We find that social communication plays a key role in the establishment of cooperation and that increased cooperative ability and a more efficient cooperative strategy

Contour integration in low-level vision is believed to occur based on lateral interaction between neurons with similar orientation tuning. How such interactions could arise in the brain has been an open question. Our model suggests that the interactions can be learned through input-driven self-organization, i.e., through the same mechanism that underlies many other developmental and functional phenomena in the visual cortex. The model also shows how synchronized firing mediated by these lateral connections can represent the percept of a contour, resulting in performance similar to that of huma

Proteus spp. are commensal gastrointestinal bacteria in many hosts, but information regarding the mutual relationships between these bacteria and their hosts is limited. The tree shrew is an alternative laboratory animal widely used for human disease research. However, little is known about the relationship between Proteus spp. and tree shrews. In this study, the complete genome sequencing method was used to analyse the characteristics of Proteus spp. isolated from tree shrews, and comparative genomic analysis was performed to reveal their relationships. The results showed that 36 Proteus spp.

High molecular weight genomic DNAs isolated from an insectivore, Tupaia, and a representative reptilian, Caiman, and avian, Gallus, were digested with restriction endonucleases transferred to nitrocellulose and hybridized with nick-translated probes of murine VH genes. The derivations of the probes designated S107V (1) and mu 107V (2,3) have been described previously. Under conditions of reduced stringency, multiple hybridizing components were observed with Tupaia and Caiman; only mu mu 107V exhibited significant hybridization with the separated fragments of Gallus DNA. The nick-translated S10

Chronic pulmonary inflammation (CPI) gives rise to serious lung injuries in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of RA-associated CPI remains little understood. Here we established a novel tree shrew-based collagen-induced arthritis (TsCIA) model to study RA-associated CPI. Our results showed that typical CPI but not fibrosis developed pathologically in the TsCIA model. Furthermore, abnormal up-regulation of pulmonary chemokine CXCL10 was directly associated with lung damage. Specific blockage of CXCR3 (a CXCL10 receptor) significantl

lntravitreal injection of substances dissolved in a vehicle solution is a common tool used to assess retinal function. We examined the effect of injection procedures (three groups) and vehicle solutions (four groups) on the development of form deprivation myopia (FDM) in juvenile tree shrews, mammals closely related to primates, starting at 24 days of visual experience (about 45 days of age). In seven groups (n = 7 per group), the myopia produced by monocular form deprivation (FD) was measured daily for 12 days during an 11-day treatment period. The FD eye was randomly selected; the contralate

Among primates, partial or complete posterior closure of the orbit has been widely accepted as a shared derived characteristic justifying an exclusive tarsier-anthropoid clade, while some regard the tarsier lateral orbit as an elaborated postorbital bar (POB). To test these competing hypotheses while minimizing the confounding effect of tarsier orbital hypertrophy, we compared tarsiers and other primates at early (fetal and newborn) ages using dissection, micro-CT scans and soft tissue histology. Our findings demonstrate unanticipated variation in the anatomy and development of the zygomaticof

Interhemispheric connections were studied in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) after multiple injections of horseradish peroxidase or horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin into the cortex of one cerebral hemisphere. After an appropriate survival period, the areal pattern of connections was revealed by flattening the other hemisphere, cutting sections parallel to the cortical surface, and staining with tetramethylbenzidine. Architectonic boundaries were identified by using sections stained for myelinated fibers. Labeled cells and axon terminations formed largely overlapping di

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to establish a methamphetamine (METH)-induced behavioral sensitization model using tree shrews, as well as to measure the protein expression of the dopamine D3 receptor (D3R) and dopamine transporter (DAT).
METHODS: Forty tree shrews were equally and randomly divided into four experimental groups: those administered with 1, 2, and 4 mg/kg METH and a control group (treated with an equal amount of normal saline). Each experimental group was repeatedly exposed to METH for nine consecutive days to induce the development of behavioral sensitization, followed by four d

BACKGROUND: Previously, we demonstrated decreased expression of somatostatin mRNA in aged macaque brain, particularly in the prefrontal cortex. To investigate whether or not this age-dependent decrease in mRNA is related to morphological changes, we analyzed somatostatin cells in the cerebra of aged Japanese macaques and compared them with those in rats and tree shrews, the latter of which are closely related to primates.
METHODS: Brains of aged macaques, tree shrews, and rats were investigated by immunohistochemistry with special emphasis on somatostatin.
RESULTS: We observed degenerating s

Methamphetamine (METH) abuse and HIV infection have emerged as two major public health concerns worldwide. Both METH and the HIV-1 Tat protein (Tat) can enter central nervous system through blood-brain barrier (BBB) and exert neurotoxic effects. However, the specific mechanism underlying their synergistic disruption of BBB remains unclear. Herein, co-culture models of endothelial cells and astrocytes and tree shrews were used to explore the role and mechanism of the Transient receptor potential M2 (TRPM2) in mediating the synergistic BBB damage induced by METH and Tat. In the tree shrew experi

With 296 million chronically infected individuals worldwide, hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes a major health burden. The major challenge to cure HBV infection lies in the fact that the source of persistence infection, viral episomal covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA), could not be targeted. In addition, HBV DNA integration, although normally results in replication-incompetent transcripts, considered as oncogenic. Though several studies evaluated the potential of gene-editing approaches to target HBV, previous in vivo studies have been of limited relevance to authentic HBV infection, as the

Tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) are a non-rodent primate-like species sometimes used for biomedical research involving hepatitis virus infections and toxicology. Genome analysis has indicated similarities between tree shrews and humans in the numbers of cytochromes P450 (P450 or CYP), which constitute a family of important drug-metabolizing enzymes; however, P450s have not been fully investigated in tree shrews. In this study, we identified CYP1A1, CYP1A2, CYP1B1, and CYP1D1 cDNAs from tree shrew liver and compared their characteristics with dog, pig, and human CYP1As. The deduced amino acid se
