Robust SARS-CoV-2 infection in nasal turbinates after treatment with systemic neutralizing antibodies.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is characterized by a burst in the upper respiratory portal for high transmissibility. To determine human neutralizing antibodies (HuNAbs) for entry protection, we tested three potent HuNAbs (IC50 range, 0.0007-0.35 μg/mL) against live SARS-CoV-2 infection in the golden Syrian hamster model. These HuNAbs inhibit SARS-CoV-2 infection by competing with human angiotensin converting enzyme-2 for binding to the viral receptor binding domain (RBD). Prophylactic intraperitoneal or intranasal injection of individual HuNAb or DNA vaccination

[Immunohistochemical studies of the neuroanatomy of the human turbinates: innervation pattern of seromucous glands].

Seromucous glands are among the main components of human nasal mucosa. To control the different physiological functions of these glands, a dense nerval network is necessary. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the general innervation of the seromucous glands in nasal mucosa. Tissue samples of inferior human turbinates were fixed and embedded in paraffin wax or frozen. Serial sections were performed and incubated with antibodies either to neuron-specific enolase (NSE) or S-100 protein. The ABC method was employed to demonstrate the immunacomplexes. The sections were counterstained with hae

Medial Flap Versus Coblation-Assisted Turbinoplasty For Turbinates Hypertrophy: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Inferior turbinate (IT) hypertrophy is a common cause of nasal obstruction. Surgical intervention may be required when medical treatment fails. This study compares the long-term efficacy of medial-flap turbinoplasty (MFT) and coblation-assisted turbinoplasty (CAT) in patients with persistent nasal obstruction. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Otolaryngology department-hospital and ambulatory clinics. METHODS: Patients with IT hypertrophy who were surgical candidates were assigned to undergo either MFT or CAT. Symptom severity was assessed using t

The value of electrocautery to the inferior turbinates in the treatment of chronic rhinitis.

A study involving 69 patients with chronic nonspecific rhinitis who did not benefit from medical treatment and were subjected to cautery to the inferior turbinate. Fifty-one (73.9%) benefited from the procedure with little or no complications. This procedure which is cheap and yet effective is advocated for developing countries where cost of equipment, technical difficulties and complications will influence the choice of surgical treatment by the practitioner.

[A modified technique for transsubmucosal maxilloethmoid sinus surgery through the inferior turbinate--transsubmucosal sinus surgery through the inferior turbinate].

In 1993, in the Journal of the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan, the authors published an endoscopic endonasal approach to surgery for chronic sinusitis, performing a transsubmucosal maxillectomy, ethmoidectomy and sphenoidectomy through the inferior turbinate, which the authors tentatively termed "swinging of the nasolacrimal duct and inferior turbinate." With the original technique, some bony structure was left partially exposed during resection of the mucosa in some patients, who suffered from postoperative crust formation. This technique thus required improvement. To solve this pr

Relationship between pediatric sinusitis and middle turbinate pneumatization--ethmoidal sinus pyocele thought to be caused by middle turbinate pneumatization.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the presence of pediatric middle turbinate pneumatization causes narrowing of the ostiomeatal complex (OMC) and is associated with the development of paranasal sinusitis. METHODS: CT scans of 190 nasal sides of 95 children (1-15 years old) were analyzed for the presence of middle turbinate pneumatization and mucosal thickness in the paranasal sinus. RESULTS: Middle turbinate pneumatization was detected in nine (4.6%) of the nasal cavities. Only one of these sides was in a patient younger than 10 years of age, while the other eight sides were in patients at l

Juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma of the inferior turbinate.

Nasal obstruction is a commonly reported issue in the Otorhinolaryngology Outpatient Department. In this case, an early adolescent boy with a long-standing problem of right-sided nasal obstruction since childhood sought consultation. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy revealed a deviation of the nasal septum to the left, coupled with right inferior turbinate hypertrophy, all overlying healthy mucosa. A CT scan of the nose and paranasal sinuses further identified a bony hyperdense lesion with ground glass attenuation, confined to the right inferior turbinate. Subsequent biopsy confirmed juvenile trabec

Turbinate Hypertrophy, Allergic Rhinitis, and Otitis Media.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Otitis media (OM) is a disease with high prevalence in infancy; it has a substantial burden on healthcare resources and a relevant impact on the quality of life of families. The link between OM and allergic rhinitis (AR) is still debated. However, there is agreement about the relevance of type 2 inflammation on turbinate hypertrophy (TH) generation. There is also evidence that TH is associated with middle ear dysventilation: a pathogenic factor promoting OM. Therefore, a vicious circle among AR, TH, and OM may occur. RECENT FINDINGS: There are some recent studies exploring

Transseptal Suturing With Turbinate Coblation in Nasal Septoturbinoplasty.

OBJECTIVE: Transseptal suture-assisted septoplasty and coblation are two techniques that can effectively treat septal deviation and inferior turbinate hypertrophy without the need for post-operative packing. In the existing literature, however, the early post-operative symptoms and surgical outcomes of the combination of these 2 procedures have not been addressed. METHOD: This retrospective study included 65 patients who underwent concomitant nasal septoturbinoplasty. The patients were divided into two groups: the transseptal suture-assisted septoplasty and inferior turbinate coblation group

Glomangiopericytoma of the inferior nasal turbinate: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Glomangiopericytoma is defined as a sinonasal tumor with perivascular myoid phenotype, which was first described in 1942 by Stout and Murray as a soft tissue tumor with characteristic proliferation including branching vessels and small vessel perivascular hyalinization. The tumor accounts for less than 0.5 % of all sinonasal neoplasms. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified this tumor as glomangiopericytoma in 2005. CASE REPORT: A 47-year-women presented with two years history of permanent left nasal obstruction and frequent epistaxis. Rhinoscopy revealed a friable grayi

Annoyance, detection and recognition of wind turbine noise.

Annoyance, recognition and detection of noise from a single wind turbine were studied by means of a two-stage listening experiment with 50 participants with normal hearing abilities. In-situ recordings made at close distance from a 1.8-MW wind turbine operating at 22 rpm were mixed with road traffic noise, and processed to simulate indoor sound pressure levels at LAeq 40 dBA. In a first part, where people were unaware of the true purpose of the experiment, samples were played during a quiet leisure activity. Under these conditions, pure wind turbine noise gave very similar annoyance ratings as
