BACKGROUND: Hypomelanosis of Ito is a rare genetic disorder characterized by whorled areas of hypomelanosis. The purpose of the present study was to revisit some aspects of Ito's hypomelanosis.
METHODS: Clinical observations included ultraviolet-light-enhanced visualization (ULEV) method. Histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy were performed on biopsy samples from the hypopigmented areas and the surrounding skin.

This report describes a monoclonal antibody (MAb) generated by immunization of mice with cell suspensions of capillary-rich fragments of mammary carcinomas. The antibody (EN 7/44) belongs to the IgM class and detects a 30.5 kDa antigen which is found in the cytoplasm of human placental and umbilical vein-endothelial cells (HUVEC) and on the surface of tumor endothelium. Evidence is accumulating that there are changes in the expression of antigens on biliary epithelium in early primary biliary cirrhosis and graft rejection. A 17-year-old girl was operated for a solitary well-circumscribed pulmonary parenchymal tumor and reoperated ten times for multiple recurrent similar pulmonary tumors during 24 years. Histologic examination revealed the so-called intravascular bronchioloalveolar tumor (IVBAT) in all instances. Two patients, a 62-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman, both with deep-seated atypical endothelial tumors within the wide concept of histiocytoid hemangioma, are reported. The oral mucosa of seven patients with dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) and one with linear IgA disease was studied. None of the patients with DH showed any macroscopic oral lesions, but direct immunofluorescence (IFL) examination of the buccal mucosa revealed granular IgA deposits in all patients. The crypt epithelium of the palatine tonsil contains M cells that play an important role in the uptake of luminal antigens to initiate immune responses. To study angiogenesis in early steps of melanoma progression, 113 cutaneous melanomas 1 mm or less in thickness were stained with Ulex europaeus lectin. Vascular density was determined in the areas of greatest vascularization. To avoid the effect of anatomic location, the quotient between vascular density at the tumor base and in normal skin (vascular ratio) was obtained in each case. Of these melanomas, 46 were immunohistochemically stained for the presence of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF).
