Is triceps hypertrophy associated with ulnar nerve luxation?

INTRODUCTION: The mechanism of ulnar nerve luxation is unclear, but the triceps brachii muscle may be a contributing factor. Therefore, we explored whether hypertrophy of the triceps brachii muscle is more frequently accompanied by nerve luxation. METHODS: In this investigation we used a cross-sectional design to study a group of amateur bodybuilders (n = 31) in a comparison with a group of age-matched healthy controls (n = 31). Triceps hypertrophy was determined clinically and sonographically. The position of the ulnar nerve in relation to the medial epicondyle was classified according to a

Cervical dermatomal zona misdiagnosed as ulnar nerve entrapment.

Herpes zoster is a secondary reactivation of primary contagious varicella-zoster virus in the dorsal root ganglia. While thoracic zona is common, cervical dermatomal zona is a rare segmental complication of herpes zoster and can be easily misdiagnosed as other diseases. This article describes a patient with initial neuralgia without dermatomal lesions that was treated as ulnar nerve entrapment syndrome until manifestation of herpetiform cutaneous lesions appeared. It is important that clinicians should be aware of the possibility of zoster infection when evaluating the onset of neuralgia in a

Does the ulnar nerve enlarge after surgical transposition?

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that symptomatic transposed ulnar nerves have a larger average cross-sectional area (CSA) than symptomatic in situ ulnar nerves. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of the charts and sonograms of 68 patients who had failed ulnar nerve transposition compared to 48 patients with cubital tunnel syndrome who had not undergone surgical management. In addition, postoperative sonograms were compared with preoperative studies when available. Failure was defined as persistence or recurrence of symptoms of ulnar neuropathy postop

Ulnar nerve conduction abnormalities in carpal tunnel syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to verify the involvement of ulnar nerve fibers in cases of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and investigate the correlation between ulnar nerve conduction parameters and extra-median spread of symptoms. METHODS: Electrophysiological studies were conducted in 93 CTS and 76 control hands. Patients were analyzed with regard to symptoms in the fifth finger. RESULTS: In the CTS cases, ulnar distal motor latency (DML) and distal sensory latency (DSL) were significantly longer, and amplitudes were lower than in controls. Increased median nerve DML correlated wit

Patient self-reported outcome after ulnar nerve transposition.

Subjective outcome was assessed in 100 patients with cubital tunnel syndrome at least 2 years after anterior transmuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve. The mean time from surgery was 37 months (standard deviation, 10 months). The patient sample of 119 operated cases included 81 unilateral procedures and 19 patients had bilateral procedures. The mean time between surgeries was 7 months. Sixty-one patients who underwent unilateral procedures reported improvement, and there was no difference in 13 unilateral cases. Thirteen patients who underwent bilateral procedures reported improvement in

[Motor replacement operations in chronic ulnar nerve paralysis].

Irreparable damage to the motor function of the ulnar nerve results primarily in paralysis of the intrinsic muscles and reduces the functional capacity of the hand by about one-half. Tendon transfers are therefore indicated when the following grasp functions are impaired; (1) claw hand with dyskinetic finger movements; (2) impaired thumb adduction with limited key pinch power; (3) instability of the index MP joint; (4) adduction weakness of the little finger. The various procedures and transposition techniques are discussed and the author's preferred methods of tendon transfer are presented.

The prevalence of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow and ulnar nerve dislocation in recreational wheelchair marathon athletes.

BACKGROUND: Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow is an entrapment neuropathy, while ulnar nerve dislocation might also be involved in its incidence and severity. Wheelchair marathon athletes may be at an increased risk for Ulnar Neuropathy. However, there is a paucity of research into the prevalence of Ulnar Neuropathy and ulnar nerve dislocation in this population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of ulnar neuropathy at the elbow and ulnar nerve dislocation in wheelchair marathon athletes. PARTICIPANTS: Wheelchair marathon athletes (N = 38) who participated in the 2017, 2018, and 2019 Oita

Metastatic Lymphoma of the Ulnar Nerve: A Case Report.

Metastatic peripheral nerve lymphomas are rare, often mimicking benign neurogenic tumors or neuropraxic injuries. While some report on the involvement of nerves in the upper and lower extremities, the majority of lymphomas involve the lower extremities, with the sciatic nerve being the most common. Furthermore, involvement of the ulnar nerve is exceedingly rare, with only four reported cases, each of which indicated a primary lesion. In this article, we report a unique case of recurrent B-cell lymphoma with metastatic disease of the ulnar nerve in a nonagenarian with a remote history of diffus

A Recurrent Schwannoma in the Left Distal Ulnar Nerve.

While peripheral nerve schwannomas have a relatively low incidence, schwannomatosis, the condition in which one forms multiple recurring schwannomas, is an even rarer phenomenon and can be hard to detect given its ability to mimic other conditions. We report a case of a 35-year-old male who presented with a mass in his left wrist and forearm, volar pain in his forearm, and numbness in his fingers. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a bilobed heterogeneous neural sheath tumor in the distal left ulnar nerve. The tumor was resected including extensive internal neurolysis using a Zeiss oper

The elastography of distal ulnar nerve branches in cyclists.

INTRODUCTION: Forced elbow flexion and pressure during bicycling result in ulnar nerve traction and pressure exerted in Guyon's canal or the nerve's distal branches. The compression of the nerves causes a change in their stiffness related to edema and eventually gradual fibrosis. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the elastography of terminal branches of the ulnar nerve in cyclists. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: Thirty cyclists, 32 healthy individuals, and 32 volunteers with ulnar nerve entrapment neuropathies participated in the study. Each participant underwent a nerve

Ulnar nerve subluxation and dislocation: a review of the literature.

The pathogenesis of ulnar nerve subluxation and dislocation is widely debated. Upon elbow flexion, the ulnar nerve slips out of the groove for the ulnar nerve, relocates medial or anterior to the medial epicondyle, and returns to its correct anatomical position upon extension. This chronic condition can cause neuritis or neuropathy; however, it has also been suggested that it protects against neuropathy by reducing tension along the nerve. This article reviews the extant literature with the aim of bringing knowledge of the topic into perspective and standardizing terminology.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia and entrapment of the ulnar nerve.

BACKGROUND: The angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is a sporadic vasoproliferative lesion of uncertain etiology involving the skin and the subcutaneous tissue. Occasionally, it involves also the large arteries compressing the near nerves. ALHE is commonly confused with Kimura's disease because of their clinical and histological similarities. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of a 52-year-old female suffering from a 6-month pain and paresthesias in the fourth and fifth finger of the right hand. The angiography showed a pseudoaneurysm in the proximal third of the right ulnar ar

Median to ulnar nerve anastomosis: a review of the literature.

Median to Ulnar nerve anastomosis in the forearm has been shown to be of clinical significance leading to "anomalous" innervation and is correlated with misdiagnosis during the assessment of nerve lesions, injuries and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS). In 1763, Martin first described the anastomosis and Gruber next mentioning it, in 1870 thus referred to as Martin--Gruber anastomosis. Despite its long history, its nature remains unclear. Many anatomical, electrophysiological, histological and genetic studies have been published, reporting the anastomosis' frequency, citing its clinical importance

Anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve with endoscopic assistance.

We treated 20 patients with cubital tunnel syndrome by anterior transposition of the ulnar nerve with endoscopic assistance. Five elbows were classified preoperatively as McGowan's stage 1, 11 as stage 2 and four as stage 3. Excellent outcomes were obtained in nine and good in eight patients. Three patients had fair results. Improvement of symptoms occurred in all patients. There were no serious complications. All ulnar nerves remained anteriorly transposed.
