PURPOSE: As a public health emergency of international concern, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) still lacks specific antiviral drugs, and symptomatic treatment is currently the mainstay. The overactivated inflammatory response in COVID-19 patients is associated with a high risk of critical illness or even death. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) can mitigate inflammation and inhibit edema formation. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of LIPUS therapy for COVID-19 pneumonia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 62 patients were randomly assigned to a treatment group (LIPUS treatment area - Group

A lab-scale ultrasound enhancing Anammox reactor (R1) was established and irradiated once a week by ultrasound with the optimal parameter (frequency of 25 kHz, intensity of 0.2 W cm-2 and exposure time of 3 min) obtained by batch experiments. R1 and the controlled Anammox reactor (R2) without exposure to the ultrasound were operated in parallel. The start-up period of Anammox process (53 days) in R1 was shorter than that (61 days) in R2. The nitrogen loading-enhancing period (day 53-day 135) in R1 was also shorter than that (day 61-day 151) in R2. At the end of the nitrogen loading-enhancing p

Ischemic diseases due to arterial stenosis or occlusion are common and can have serious consequences if untreated. Therapeutic ultrasound like high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablates tissues while low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPU) promotes healing at relatively low temperatures. However, blood vessel cooling effect and reduced flow in ischemia impact temperature distribution and ultrasonic treatment efficacy. This work established a rabbit limb ischemia model by ligating the femoral artery, measuring vascular changes and temperature rise during LIPU exposures. Results showed the

Ultrasound has gained widespread application in the field of transdermal drug delivery (TDD), including dermatological therapy and aesthetic medicine, owing to its non-invasive nature and cost-effectiveness. Despite its widespread use, clinical researchers have largely relied on empirical selection of low-frequency ultrasound (tens to hundreds of kHz) for single-frequency sonophoresis, and a mechanistic understanding of how ultrasound frequency regulates cavitation-from nucleation to bubble collapse-remains lacking, which limits the rational design of ultrasound-based TDD systems. In this stud

PURPOSE: Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a form of mid-frequency ultrasound (0.7-3 MHz) delivered in pulse wave mode (100 and 1000 Hz). LIPUS delivers high-frequency sound waves with low-intensity mechanical energy that can be transmitted to cells and thus tissues, thereby producing biological effects. The regenerative activity of LIPUS in tissues, including the cavernous nerve, has been demonstrated in numerous studies. In this systematic review, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of LIPUS on erectile dysfunction (ED).
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted using PubMed-MEDLINE

Decades of research and applications have demonstrated that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has a certain therapeutic effect on diseases involving bone remodeling. LIPUS operates in a pulsed-wave mode at low intensity, ensuring efficient transmission of acoustic energy to target tissues, thereby providing non-invasive physical stimulation for therapeutic purposes. Bone remodeling refers to the dynamic renewal process of bone tissue that is jointly completed by multiple cells in the bone metabolic microenvironment. LIPUS influences the basic biological processes of bone remodeling in th

Loading is indispensable for the growth, development, and maintenance of joint tissues, including mandibular condylar cartilage, but excessive loading or reduced host adaptive capacity can considerably damage the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), leading to temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA). TMJ-OA, associated with other pathological conditions and aging processes, is a highly degenerative disease affecting the articular cartilage. Many treatment modalities for TMJ-OA have been developed. Traditional clinical treatment includes mainly nonsurgical options, such as occlusal splints. H

Since the middle of the 20th century and in order to treat neurological diseases, clinicians have proposed the use of ultrasound, instead of skin incision or trepanation, when performing intracranial thermocoagulation. However, focusing ultrasound intracranially with high precision was technically difficult until recent technological developments. Specifically, advancements in ultrasound phased-array transducers have eliminated the need for a craniotomy, and progress in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging has allowed the real-time measurement of intracranial temperature. Both of the above have ena

Ultrasound-matter interactions underpin numerous biomedical and soft-matter applications, yet simulating these phenomena is challenging due to the large separation of viscous and sonic time scales. Continuum methods capture large-scale wave propagation but cannot resolve microscale interactions, while particle-based approaches offer molecular resolution but struggle with efficiency and stability at larger scales. We introduce a particle-based virtual ultrasound machine that uses a smoothed dissipative particle dynamics variant with an implicit pressure solver and a negative-pressure stabilizat

An ultrasonic pulse propagating in cancellous bone can be separated into two waves depending on the condition of the specimen. These two waves, which are called the fast wave and the slow wave, provide important information for the diagnosis of osteoporosis. The present study proposes to utilize a signal processing method that extracts the instantaneous frequency (IF) of waveforms from multiple spectral channels. The instantaneous frequency was expected to be able to show detailed time-frequency properties of ultrasonic waves being transmitted through cancellous bone. The employed method, term

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) accelerates fracture healing by stimulating the production of bone callus and the mineralization process. This study compared a novel bimodal acoustic signal (BMAS) device for bone fracture healing to a clinical LIPUS system (EXOGEN; Bioventus, Durham, NC, USA). Thirty rabbits underwent a bilateral fibular osteotomy. Each rabbits' legs were randomized to receive 20-min treatment daily for 18 days with BMAS or LIPUS. The latter utilizes a longitudinal ultrasonic mode only, while the former employs ultrasound-induced shear stress to promote bone formation.

Ultrasound neuromodulation has emerged as a promising noninvasive technique for regulating neuronal activity with high spatial and temporal precision. Among its mechanisms, the modulation of mechanosensitive (MS) ion channels plays a key role in converting acoustic energy into cellular responses. This review highlights the biophysical mechanisms by which ultrasound activates specific ion channels (e.g., Piezo, TRP, K2P, MscL) and discusses their therapeutic implications in neurological and psychiatric disorders, including Parkinson's disease and depression. Advances in sonogenetics, nanopartic
