Longitudinal Relations Among Parental Substance Use Disorder and Adolescent Drinking Behavior: The Role of Temperament, Negative Urgency, and Maternal Parenting.

Research suggests that parental substance use disorder is associated with adolescent drinking indirectly through negative urgency, a form of impulsivity that is particularly associated with high-risk drinking. Moreover, childhood mechanisms of risk may play a role in this developmental chain such that childhood temperament and parenting may be mechanisms through which parental substance use disorder is associated with adolescent negative urgency and drinking behavior. Therefore, the current study tested whether parental substance use disorder was indirectly associated with adolescent drinking

Brief Underage Alcohol Use Screener Scores Predict Health Risk Behaviors.

The aim of this study was to determine if adolescents' scores on a 2-item underage alcohol use screener predict risky consequences of past-year alcohol use and other health risk behaviors in a nonclinical, school-based sample of adolescents. A predominantly minority sample of 756 middle and high school students completed in-school tablet-based surveys on past-year underage alcohol use and a range of health risk behaviors. Higher scores for self alcohol risk and peer alcohol risk were associated with higher risk of past-year riding with a drunk driver and past 90-day measures of cigarette use,

Growth trajectories of alcohol information processing and associations with escalation of drinking in early adolescence.

This longitudinal study provided a comprehensive examination of age-related changes in alcohol outcome expectancies, subjective evaluation of alcohol outcomes, and automatic alcohol associations in early adolescence. A community sample (52% female, 75% White/non-Hispanic) was assessed annually for 3 years (mean age at the first assessment = 11.6 years). Results from growth modeling suggested that perceived likelihood of positive outcomes increased and that subjective evaluations of these outcomes were more positive with age. Perceived likelihood of negative outcomes declined with age. Automati

Skill vs. Disposition: Examining Paths of Intervention Effects in an Alcohol and Drug Use Prevention Trial Targeting U.S. Adolescents.

The goal of this study was to evaluate a mediation model of two approaches to deterring the onset of alcohol, cigarette, and marijuana among middle school adolescents. Students completed surveys that included yes/no self-reports about their past 30-day and lifetime alcohol, cigarettes, and marijuana use. Surveys assessed dispositions: perceptions that drug use would interfere with desired lifestyles, perceptions about drug use prevalence and acceptability, and drug use intentions. Surveys also assessed skills: students' ability to achieve goals, make decisions, and refuse drug use offers. Clas

Youth-targeted alcohol control policies and adolescent suicide: An interrupted time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent alcohol use is a social concern worldwide and is strongly associated with violence, criminal behavior, and especially suicide. The aim of this study was to evaluate how efforts to control underage drinking in Korea over the past decades have affected adolescent suicide, another public health issue in Korea. METHODS: An interrupted time-series analysis was conducted to assess the changes in adolescent suicide mortality following the implementation of youth-targeted alcohol control policies-the prohibition of proxy alcohol purchases for youth, the mandate for age-restrict

Development of deep learning auto-encoder algorithms for predicting alcohol use in Korean adolescents based on cross-sectional data.

Alcohol is a highly addictive substance, presenting significant global public health concerns, particularly among adolescents. Previous studies have been limited by traditional research methods, making it challenging to encompass diverse risk factors and automate screening or prediction of adolescents' alcohol use. This study aimed to develop prediction algorithms for adolescent alcohol use in South Korea using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models, and to identify important features. The study utilized a combination of DL (i.e., Auto-encoder) and ML (i.e., Logistic regression, R

Youth cannabis and alcohol use expectancies mediate associations between pre-adolescent cognitive function and subsequent use initiation.

Youth substance use increases risk for developing substance use disorders. Previous work using the longitudinal ABCD Study® found distinct neurocognitive factors contribute to youth tobacco and alcohol initiation. Using data for 7776 ABCD Study® participants, this study expands prior work to examine prospective associations between early neurocognitive factors (general ability, executive function, learning and memory, and visuospatial and mental rotation) at ages 9-10 years (sample enrolled 2016-2018) and cannabis use by ages 13-14 years. We also test whether positive and negative tobacco smok

Adult Binge Drinking: Childhood Sexual Abuse, Gender and the Role of Adolescent Alcohol-Related Experiences.

AIMS: This study examines gender differences in the pathway from childhood sexual abuse (CSA) to adult binge drinking. METHODS: Using longitudinal data on 313 males and females (31-41 years old, mean = 36.21) in the Lehigh Longitudinal Study, we test for gender differences in the pathway from CSA to adolescent drinking, norms and pro-alcohol peers, to adult binge drinking. RESULTS: Controlling for family history of alcohol problems, socioeconomic status (SES) and ethnicity, we found that for females there was a significant direct effect of CSA on adult binge drinking. For males there was no

Gender differences in prevalence of drug use among high risk adolescents in Israel.

BACKGROUND: The use of tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs is considered to be primarily a male problem. Many studies of drug use in the general population have reinforced this assumption. Other recent findings, however, call the extent of gender differences into question. METHODS: Self report data were collected from 911 high risk adolescents who ranged from 12 to 18 years. RESULTS: Last 30 day use was used to compare the youth. Significant findings show girls use cigarettes more than boys; boys use all types of alcohol more than girls; and, boys use marijuana and hashish more than girls. No

Prefrontal cortex development and emergence of self-regulatory competence: the two cardinal features of adolescence disrupted in context of alcohol abuse.

Adolescence is a tumultuous period in the lifetime of an individual confronted to major changes in emotional, social and cognitive appraisal. During this period of questioning and doubt, while the executive functions are still maturing, the abstract reasoning remains vague and the response inhibition loose; ultimately the adolescent scarcely resists temptation. Consequently, adolescence is often associated with uninhibited risk-taking, reckless behaviours, among which are alcohol and illicit drugs use. Here, we discuss how the development of the prefrontal cortex (which critically contributes

Prevalence and socio-ecological correlates of adolescent alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana use in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent substance use is high in the Caribbean. To inform policy and programming, it is necessary to understand these behaviors at the country level. However, little is known about adolescent substance use in small island states. For the first time, we determined the prevalence and correlates of adolescent substance use in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). METHODS: We used secondary data from the first Global School-based Health Survey, conducted from May to June 2022. All students in all schools were invited to complete the cross-sectional survey in their classrooms. The s

Feasibility, usability, and acceptability of MobileCoach-Teen: A smartphone app-based preventative intervention for risky adolescent drinking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Older adolescence (ages 15-18) is a critical period for experimentation with substance use, especially alcohol. Adolescent drinking poses hazards to physical and mental health, amplifies risk associated with other activities typically initiated during this life stage (e.g., driving, sexual activity), and is associated with adverse outcomes in adolescence and adulthood. Existing preventative interventions are expensive and have questionable long-term efficacy. Digital interventions may represent an accessible and personalized approach to providing preventative intervention content t

Is it safe to just try? A longitudinal study of adolescent patterns of drinking and smoking via latent transition analyses.

PURPOSE: A growing body of research reports fruitful evidence about longitudinal patterns of alcohol and tobacco use. However, it is still necessary to understand longitudinal patterns of alcohol and tobacco use separately especially to describe if their sporadic use in adolescence is indeed sporadic or leads to escalation. This study aimed at exploring stability and change in alcohol and tobacco use. METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal study with three waves of yearly data collection in Spain. The sample at T1 (2020) included 889 adolescents (48.3 % female, Mage = 12.6; SDage = 0.83

Identifying high school risk factors that forecast heavy drinking onset in understudied young adults.

Heavy alcohol drinking is a major, preventable problem that adversely impacts the physical and mental health of US young adults. Studies seeking drinking risk factors typically focus on young adults who enrolled in 4-year residential college programs (4YCP) even though most high school graduates join the workforce, military, or community colleges. We examined 106 of these understudied young adults (USYA) and 453 4YCPs from the National Consortium on Alcohol and NeuroDevelopment in Adolescence (NCANDA) by longitudinally following their drinking patterns for 8 years from adolescence to young adu

Rate of alcohol consumption in the daily life of adolescents and emerging adults.

RATIONALE: Alcohol consumption in adolescents and emerging adults is a significant issue. However, our understanding of the topography of alcohol use within drinking episodes in this population is at a nascent stage. OBJECTIVES: This study characterized rate of alcohol consumption in the daily lives of problem drinkers ages 16-24 years (N = 75). We examined whether AUD symptoms and the presence of peers, factors relevant to alcohol consumption in youth, were associated with rate of consumption. METHODS: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) was used (Nobservations = 799). Rate of consumption

Early life temperamental anxiety is associated with excessive alcohol intake in adolescence: A rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) model.

Teenage alcohol abuse is a major health concern, particularly because the majority of alcohol consumed by teenagers is via binge drinking, a known risk factor for increasing the likelihood for the development of future alcohol use disorders (AUDs). Identifying individuals at risk for excessive alcohol intake in adolescence is a step toward developing effective preventative measures and intervention programs. As adults with AUDs tend to self-medicate their anxiety with alcohol, this longitudinal study assesses the role of infant anxiety-like temperament in the development of adolescent alcohol
