Gambling with life: Masculinity, risk, and danger in the lives of unauthorized migrant roofers.

BACKGROUND: This paper examines the occupational experiences of unauthorized immigrants employed in one of the most dangerous occupations in the United States: roofing. METHODS: We draw on 40 in-depth interviews with return migrants in Guanajuato, Mexico, to examine how the adoption of masculinity, dangerous working conditions, the labor market structure, and absence of legal status exacerbates injuries for unauthorized roofers. FINDINGS: Undocumented men return to Mexico injured with chronic pain, health complications, and trauma. We find that men "do gender" that is adopt masculine beliefs

Are migration routes disease transmission routes? Understanding Hepatitis and HIV transmission amongst undocumented Pakistani migrants and asylum seekers in a Parisian suburb.

Drawing on hospital-based interviews and fieldwork in a deprived Parisian suburb, this paper analyses the spatio-temporal dynamics of risk, exposure, and mobilities in individual stories of undocumented Pakistani male migrants, and asylum seekers-receiving treatment for single and combined diagnoses of HIV, and Hepatitis C and B. Inviting alignments with the 'sexual' turn in mobility studies, it prioritises the interface of all-male undocumented migration, mobility, sexuality, and homosociality in circumscribing disease transmission geneaologies. It questions the extent to which illegal migrat

Childhood adversity, socioemotional functioning and generalized anxiety in young adults from mixed immigration status families.

BACKGROUND: The translation of research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) into effective prevention and treatment of psychopathology requires examination of how ACEs impact mental health. Moreover, increased attention to more marginalized populations, such as immigration-affected ethnic-minority young adults, is greatly needed. OBJECTIVE: The current study tested the hypothesis that greater ACEs would be related to greater generalized anxiety symptoms directly and indirectly, via ACE-related deficits in coping efficacy, self-compassion, and perceived support, above and beyond immigratio

An Exploration of Service Providers' Experiences With Latinos Convicted of a Sex Offense.

Despite the growing Latino presence in the U.S. criminal justice system and among those who have committed sex offenses specifically, little is known about the barriers and challenges faced by this population when accessing treatment services. This study sought to gather more information about responsivity factors that may be specific to Latinos who have committed sexual offenses. Service providers who worked with Latinos convicted of sexual offenses completed an online survey and answered questions regarding perceived challenges and barriers they encountered when working with Latino clients a

Enhancing India's Health Security Efforts Against Mycobacterium Tuberculosis : Gaps and Opportunities.

India bears a quarter of the world's tuberculosis (TB) burden. In 2018, the country set an ambitious goal to eliminate TB by 2025-5 years ahead of the global target. While India has launched several large-scale public health initiatives, including Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana, several challenges persist that threaten progress toward elimination. These include data transparency issues, overburdened healthcare systems, and an unrealistic timeline for achieving elimination. In this article, we highlight underaddressed health security challenges-including multid

Low knowledge of antiretroviral treatments for the prevention of HIV among precarious immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa living in the greater Paris area: Results from the Makasi project.

INTRODUCTION: In France, combination prevention tools, particularly antiretroviral treatment for HIV prevention has been available for several years. We described the knowledge of these antiretroviral treatments among immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa, who are particularly affected by HIV, and the factors associated with this knowledge. METHODS: The data come from the Makasi study, which was conducted between 2019 and 2020 among precarious immigrants from sub-Saharan Africa recruited through a community-based outreach approach in the greater Paris area (n = 601). We described levels of knowl

Treponema pallidum infection in asymptomatic persons: A puzzling scenario in the Canary Islands (Spain) (2001-2020).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by T. pallidum subsp. Pallidum. In high-income countries the main mode of transmission is sexual. Approximately half of infected patients are asymptomatic, which does not exclude the possibility of transmission. The aim of this study was to evaluate syphilis seroprevalence among asymptomatic persons in Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three different groups were studied from 2001 to 2020: i) a "blood donor" sample of 948,869 voluntary blood donations as a proxy of health population.; ii) undocumente

Latent tuberculosis infection: screening and treatment in an urban setting.

Despite its benefit for treating active tuberculosis, directly observed therapy (DOT) for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) has been largely understudied among challenging inner city populations. Utilizing questionnaire data from a comprehensive mobile healthcare clinic in New Haven, CT from 2003 to July 2011, a total of 2,523 completed tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) resulted in 356 new LTBIs. Multivariate logistic regression correlated covariates of the two outcomes (a) initiation of isoniazid preventative therapy (IPT) and (b) completion of 9 months of IPT. Of the 357 newly positive TSTs, 8

Resilience Among Undocumented Migrants: An Analysis of the Likelihood to Participate in a Panel Study Among Undocumented Migrants Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Undocumented migrants, known for their particularly vulnerable living conditions, were deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges, some demonstrated resilience, successfully remaining in their host countries. Drawing on insights from the Parchemins study, which examined the experiences of undocumented and newly regularized migrants in Geneva, Switzerland, this paper details on undocumented migrants that faced accumulated difficulties during different moments of data collection amid the pandemic. Based on empirical findings, we observe that only a specific group among undo

Deportation enforcement, mental health, and health risk behaviors of hispanic adolescents.

This study estimates the causal effect of intensified deportation enforcement on adolescent mental health and related behaviors. We pool data from the CDC's biennial Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, 2009-2019, covering students in grades 9-12. Our primary analysis focuses on 174,454 Hispanic adolescents, weighted to be representative of enrolled students in participating jurisdictions. We implement an exposure difference-in-differences design that exploits the national reinstatement of Secure Communities in 2017 and cross-state variation in pre-policy exposure (the year-2000 unauthoriz

At the crossroads: Intersectional approaches to women's health equity.

Global shifts in health policies have significantly affected access to reproductive healthcare services, with impacts varying greatly across different populations. Recent policy changes in various regions have included defunding reproductive health programs, promoting abstinence-only education, and restricting international non-government organizations from providing comprehensive reproductive healthcare services. These policies have led to clinic closures, reduced access to maternal and reproductive healthcare in low- and middle-income countries, and increased health inequities. While all low

Management of a patient presenting with giant cell myocarditis - A case report.

Giant cell myocarditis is a rare and frequently fatal disease that requires extensive cardiac care. Given the rarity of this condition no specific management recommendations exist. We describe a patient who presented with congestive heart failure that required a left ventricular assist device and a temporary right ventricular assist device along with immunosuppressive therapy. This case also brings to attention how undocumented immigration status can limit transplantation opportunities in the USA. <Learning objective: Giant cell myocarditis is a rare and frequently fatal cardiac disease that,

A Qualitative Review of Office of Inspector General Complaints Submitted by Individuals Held in ICE Detention.

Growing evidence highlights medical mismanagement and gross negligence at United States (U.S.) Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facilities. Accountability at these facilities is predominately limited to annual inspections to determine compliance with specific detention standards and responses to formal grievances and/or complaints. The grievance process is particularly important as it provides an opportunity for individuals directly impacted to document and formalize negative experiences. To gain a better understanding of the conditions and violations faced by individuals de

Toward Zero New HIV Infections in Amsterdam in 2026: Building Bridges Between Community Organizations, Undocumented Migrants, and Sexual Health Care Providers.

BACKGROUND: In the 4 largest cities in the Netherlands, an estimated 400 people live with undiagnosed HIV, including 170 in Amsterdam. Amsterdam targets having zero new HIV infections in 2026. Undocumented migrants are disproportionately affected by HIV and often contract HIV after migration. Moreover, they often experience difficulties accessing health care. The aim of this study was to analyze the outcomes of an HIV/sexually transmitted infection testing program for undocumented migrants through community based testing. METHODS: Between May 2021 and January 2022, data for this cross-section

Characterization of hepatitis virus co-infections in a cohort of immigrants living in southern Italy.

To characterize viral hepatitis co-infections in a cohort of immigrants living in southern Italy. In a prospective multicenter study, all undocumented immigrants and low-income refugees consecutively evaluated for a clinical consultation at one of the five first-level clinical centers in southern Italy from January 2012 to February 2020 were enrolled. All subjects included in the study were screened for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) and anti-HIV; the HBsAg-positive were screened also for anti-delta. Of the 2923 subjects enrolled, 257 (8%) were HBsAg-positive

Expanding Prenatal Care to Unauthorized Immigrant Women and the Effects on Infant Health.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the effect of access to prenatal care on unauthorized and low-income, new legal permanent resident immigrant women and their offspring. METHODS: We used a difference-in-differences design that leverages the staggered rollout of Emergency Medicaid Plus by county from 2008 to 2013 as a natural experiment to estimate the effect on health service utilization for women and health outcomes for their infants. Regular Medicaid pregnancies were used as an additional control in a triple difference design. RESULTS: Our sample included pregnancies covered by Emergency Medicaid (35,

Psychological distress in the face of a pandemic: An observational study characterizing the impact of COVID-19 on immigrant outpatient mental health.

Undocumented immigrants have disproportionately suffered during the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic due to factors including limited medical access and financial insecurity, which can exacerbate pandemic-associated distress. Psychological outcomes for immigrant outpatients were assessed after transition to telepsychiatry in March 2020. Mental health was assessed with Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-2) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-2) inventories, a novel coronavirus-specific survey, and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10+). Feedback on telepsychiatry ses

Accessing ART in Malawi while living in South Africa - a thematic analysis of qualitative data from undocumented Malawian migrants.

The majority of international migrants from Malawi to South Africa are undocumented, and some of them are on ART. This study explored how these migrants manage to access ART. Qualitative data were collected using open-ended questions in semi-structured interviews. 23 returned undocumented Malawian migrants from South Africa participated in the study. Also, key informant discussions were held with three health workers. Data collection took place in April and May 2015 at a rural village of Namwera in Mangochi district in southern Malawi. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and translated
