The aim of this study was to detect and characterize Giardia lamblia in animals in the UAE. Eighty-seven fecal samples were tested for G. lamblia using the conserved fragment of small subunit (SSU)-rRNA by nested PCR. Giardia-positive isolates were genotyped for assemblages A and B using assemblage specific primers of the triosephosphate isomerase (tpi) gene. Thirty samples (34.5%) were positive for G. lamblia. ABO and Rh blood groups among 54 syphilitics were determined. A significantly increased incidence of syphilis in persons blood groups B and AB was observed; significant decrease in those having groups A and 0. A significant decrease in, the incidence of syphilis was also observed in Rh negative 'subjects. These results suggest a possible relationship between the inheritance of blood groups and the natural defence mechanism against syphilis.

Selective improvements in neonatal care resources and practices were instituted between 1992/1994 (period 1) and 1995/1998 (period 2) following a neonatal audit in the United Arab Emirates. We evaluated the effect of these changes on neonatal mortality rate (NNMR), birth-weight-specific mortality rates and causes of mortality.
