BACKGROUND: Implementation research has emerged as part of evidence-based decision-making efforts to plug current gaps in the translation of research evidence into health policy and practice. While there has been a growing number of initiatives promoting the uptake of implementation research in Africa, its role and effectiveness remain unclear, particularly in the context of universal health coverage (UHC). Hence, this scoping review aimed to identify and characterise the use of implementation research initiatives for assessing UHC-related interventions or programmes in Africa.

Low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear a disproportionately high burden of the global morbidity and mortality caused by chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchiectasis, and post-tuberculosis lung disease. CRDs are strongly associated with poverty, infectious diseases, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and contribute to complex multi-morbidity, with major consequences for the lives and livelihoods of those affected. The relevance of CRDs to health and socioeconomic wellbeing is expected to increase in the decade

With the increasing prices of newly approved anti-cancer treatments contributing to rising healthcare costs, healthcare systems are facing complex economic and ethical dilemmas. Especially in countries with universal access and mandatory health insurance, including many European countries, the organizing of funding or reimbursement of expensive new treatments can be challenging. When expensive anti-cancer treatments are deemed safe and effective, but are not (yet) reimbursed, ethical dilemmas arise. In countries with universal healthcare systems, such as the Netherlands, this gives rise to a r

INTRODUCTION: Surgical care is essential to achieving universal health coverage (UHC) and addressing 30% of the global disease burden, including non-communicable diseases (NCDs), maternal health and injuries. However, low and middle-income countries (LMICs) face significant challenges providing equitable access to surgical services, with 5 billion people lacking access and US$20 trillion in associated global economic losses, emphasising the need for sustainable domestic financing strategies.
METHODS: A multifaceted approach combined quantitative analysis of domestic health spending trends (20

PROBLEM: In 2018, the Egyptian government enacted a universal health coverage law mandating provision of high-quality, effective and equitable health care. Achieving this mandate would require expanding availability and use of evidence-based national clinical practice and public health guidelines.
APPROACH: In 2022, Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population requested support from the World Health Organization (WHO) to establish a national guideline development and adaptation programme. To inform the process, WHO conducted a situation analysis. The findings led to a collaboration between WHO a

INTRODUCTION: Mental, neurological and substance use conditions lead to tremendous suffering, yet globally access to effective care is limited. In line with the 13th General Programme of Work (GPW 13), in 2019 the World Health Organization (WHO) launched the WHO Special Initiative for Mental Health: Universal Health Coverage for Mental Health to advance mental health policies, advocacy, and human rights and to scale up access to quality and affordable care for people living with mental health conditions. Six countries were selected as 'early-adopter' countries for the WHO Special Initiative fo

After leaving Chile during the Pinochet era, Dr Morales studied economics, health administration and international health at the University of Montreal. But his baptism in the field came in Haiti, where he was first PAHO advisor to the health ministry, and then for five years was responsible for human resources and health economics in the PAHO offices in the capital of Port-au-Prince. He was at his post during the flooding in Gonaïves, five hurricanes, the 2010 earthquake and the ensuing cholera epidemic-doubtless the most dramatic and complex times for the country's health in recent history.

OBJECTIVES: Despite compulsory universal health coverage, rising health insurance premiums in Geneva, Switzerland may present financial barriers to care. This study evaluates trends in forgoing healthcare for financial reasons from 2011 to 2025, with associations with insurance premiums, socioeconomic and health-related factors.
METHODS: We conducted an annual cross-sectional study with 1,000 randomly selected participants every year (2011-2025), (n = 10,169). The primary outcome was self-reported forgoing of healthcare for financial reasons. Temporal trends and associations with premiums wer

BACKGROUND: Achieving universal health coverage (UHC) involves all individuals attaining accessible health interventions at an affordable cost. We examined current patterns and temporal trends of cancer mortality and UHC across sociodemographic index (SDI) settings, and quantified these association.
METHODS: We used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 and Our World in Data. The UHC effective coverage index was obtained to assess the potential population health gains delivered by health systems. The estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was

BACKGROUND: Improving service delivery is a key strategy for achieving service coverage, one of the two components of universal health coverage (UHC). As one of the largest global public health initiatives, individuals involved with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) have learned many important lessons about service delivery. We identified contributors and challenges to delivering health services at national and subnational levels using experiences from the GPEI. We described strategies used to strengthen service delivery and draw lessons that could be applicable to achieving UHC.

PURPOSE: Despite universal health care coverage, Colombia remains among the most unequal countries worldwide, with disparities in cancer care. We evaluated inequities in breast cancer care across stage at diagnosis, timeliness of care, and survival by region, insurance scheme, and ethnicity.
METHODS: Longitudinal study including all adult women with primary invasive breast cancer diagnosed between 2021 and 2023, reported to the Colombian administrative cancer registry. Inequities were assessed between regions of residence, ethnicity, and health insurance schemes. Outcomes included stage at di

Global eye health is increasingly recognized as integral to achieving universal health coverage (UHC), with equity, access, and service integration serving as key indicators of system performance. Israel provides a distinctive case study, having established UHC through the 1994 National Health Insurance Law, which guarantees essential services to all residents. This review assesses Israel’s eye care system through a public and global health lens, applying the WHO health system building blocks to examine its organization, strengths, and persistent challenges. Israel benefits from strong integra

INTRODUCTION: All countries around the world have been encouraged to implement universal health coverage, emphasising its essential role in global health policy. Morocco has long been part of this international movement. Several health reforms have been implemented over the years, significantly improving the health status of the population and service coverage. However, several gaps continue to hinder the expected results. The current health financing model in Morocco is one of the main persistent challenges. It remains largely dependent on out-of-pocket expenditure, with no significant change

INTRODUCTION: Achieving universal health coverage (UHC) through an effective health financing system is a challenge for many low-income countries. Learning is key to success due to many uncertainties and unknowns. Using the case of translating strategic health purchasing into policy and practice in Burkina Faso, our study seeks to understand how policy learning can shape policy processes and outcomes.
METHODS: We used a qualitative case study design and Dunlop and Radaelli's conceptualisation of policy learning to identify which modes of learning did or did not occur, what helped or hindered

BACKGROUND: The ambitious expansion of social health insurance in China has played a crucial role in preventing and alleviating poverty caused by illness. However, there is no government-sponsored health insurance program specifically for younger children and inequities are more pronounced in healthcare utilization, medical expenditure, and satisfaction in some households with severely ill children. This study assessed the effectiveness of child health insurance in terms of alleviating poverty caused by illness.
METHODS: Data were collected from two rounds of follow-up surveys using the China

Cancer equity is a global priority, particularly within Universal Health Coverage systems that are committed to reducing disparities in access and outcomes. However, practical barriers to addressing inequities persist, such as varying definitions and clinical measurements. This inconsistency leads to a reliance on data that does not accurately reflect existing inequities or progress towards equitable care. Commonly reported measures are often aggregate, population-level indicators, such as cancer incidence and mortality, which fall outside the scope of health services and clinicians to influen

Critical interpretive analysis of literature review was applied to shed light on the status of universal access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and the progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in Ethiopia. Special emphasis was given to the determinations of the Ethiopian health policy frameworks to include comprehensive SRHR services in the UHC benefit package. Clinical services for pregnant women and newborn, abortion care, family planning, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) complication treatment, Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), and sexual health services ar

Obstetric fistula is a serious public health problem affecting women in low- and middle-income countries. It is characterized by continuous leakage of urine and/or feces from the vagina as a result of injuries sustained from childbirth. It has continued to exist in Nigeria because the publicly funded health-care system has failed to provide quality, equitable, accessible, and affordable maternal health care. It is largely a problem of poor, young, uneducated, and rural women who lack access to quality maternity care. Universal health coverage implies a system which provides quality health-care
