Blood-borne virus infection: the occupational risks.

Healthcare workers who are in contact with patients and/or clinical material are at continuous risk of acquiring blood-borne viral infections, in particular, infection with hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Prevention of occupational exposure is dependent on education. Prevention strategies include immunization, exposure avoidance by the use of universal precautions at all times, and post-exposure advice and prophylaxis. This article will review the risks to healthcare workers associated with exposure to hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. It will

With strengthened guidelines for health care workers, the CDC ups its game against the deadly Ebola virus.

Informed by the cases of two nurses who contracted Ebola virus disease (EVD) while caring for a patient with the disease in Dallas, TX, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA, has unveiled strengthened guidance for health care workers. Further, nursing organizations are pledging to work together to identify gaps and make system-level improvements to protect both patients and caregivers. The CDC's new recommendations emphasize rigorous training for health care workers in how to put on and take off personal protective equipment (PPE), and they state that this activit

Dental practice implications of prion diseases.

This review article discusses dental practice implications of prion diseases, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. The current universal precautions used for infection control in dentistry do not inactivate infectious prions. There is a theoretical, yet real risk of prion disease transmission through dental treatment, although the magnitude of that risk has not yet been determined. Medical, family, and travel histories can demonstrate the need for implementing improved levels of infection control. Best practices include the following: For certain cases, single-use disposable dental instruments

Imported Human Rabies - Kentucky and Ohio, 2024.

Human rabies cases are rare in the United States; most result from domestic wildlife exposure. U.S. residents can acquire rabies abroad, typically through contact with dogs in areas where dog-maintained rabies is endemic. In November 2024, a man from Haiti was admitted to a Kentucky hospital with an 8-day history of progressive lower extremity pain and weakness. Soon after admission, he experienced hypersalivation, dysphagia, agitation, and eventually, respiratory failure requiring invasive mechanical ventilation. Ten days after admission, he was transferred to a referral hospital in Ohio, whe

Recommendations: HIV/HBV infected health care workers. Connecticut Department of Health Services.

These recommendations have been developed in response to a congressional mandate and to public concern about transmission of HIV from health care workers to patients. Hepatitis B is also addressed in the recommendations. Both viruses are transmitted through blood-to-blood contact. The likelihood of transmission of HBV is very low, for HIV extraordinarily remote. The following are action steps to reduce this risk further: 1. The commissioner charges the professional associations and institutions to develop plans to educate their members, nonmembers, and employees on universal precautions, proce

Investigating new opportunities to combat stigma in healthcare through a "universal" approach: findings from a longitudinal study of healthcare workers in Mombasa, Kenya.

Stigma plays a significant role in health and healthcare. To date, anti-stigma efforts have primarily focused on specific individual domains (e.g., mental health, HIV), resulting in fragmented efforts to address many different "stigmas." Theorists now advocate for shifting toward a universal framework to understand and respond to stigma. To empirically test the potential utility of stigma as a universal concept, we analyzed data from 453 healthcare workers participating in a prospective cohort in Mombasa, Kenya. Across four waves comprising 925 points of data (June 2023-December 2024), we foun

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease guidelines: a regional approach.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) is an infectious, progressive, degenerative neurological disorder. Unique CJD Precautions must be adhered to as the infectious agent is difficult to destroy. A regional group in Hamilton-Burlington Ontario developed CJD guidelines based on critical review of the current evidence of transmission in a Canadian healthcare environment, current published standards of practice in North America, the United Kingdom and Australia; and principles of laboratory and patient care safety as well as expert opinion.

[The problem of cross infection and risk of infection for the practitioner].

Epidemiologic data show that in Belgium, the number of HIV-infected persons increases with an average of 3 a day. This increase will pose a real problem to all health workers including the dentists. The chance that the general dental practitioner comes in contact with HIV-infected patients will increase in the years to come. Therefore, each dental practitioner should have a scheme in his office to prevent cross infection. The transmission of HIV is analogue to HBV: blood, blood products, injury, wound, use of non-sterile instruments and needles... Transmission of HIV by saliva has not been pro

Compliance to recommended infection control procedures: changes over six years among British Columbia dentists.

Over the last decade, in response to the heightened awareness of HBV and HIV infections, world health authorities have produced specific infection control recommendations for dental practices. Surveys have been done in various countries to investigate the level of compliance to these recommendations. This paper reports on the changes in compliance over a six year period among British Columbia dentists, as indicated from four volunteer surveys conducted between 1987 and 1993. During that period, the percentage of dentists who reported taking a medical history for each new patient increased from

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus as a nosocomial pathogen in Iran.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a viral disease with several different modes of transmission. We describe the manifestations, outcome, and likely modes of transmission for three nosocomial cases. All three cases were healthcare workers (two men and one woman). They had fever, myalgia, and petechia. Disseminated intravascular coagulation resulted in the death occurred in the woman. Because this disease is manifested with non-specific influenza-like symptoms, diagnosis can be difficult. Data for these patients can be used to investigate airborne or sexual transmission of this virus, al

The As, Bs, Cs, Ds, & Es of hepatitis.

1. Hepatitis may be caused by a variety of agents, including viruses (e.g., hepatitis A-E viruses) and certain chemicals (e.g., acute toxic hepatitis from exposure to hepatotoxins). Hepatitis also may occur secondary to other illnesses (e.g., tuberculosis, bilary obstruction, etc.). 2. The nurse needs to be aware of potential etiologies, modes of transmission, and the clinical course associated with the various types of hepatitis. 3. Hepatitis is often preventable. The nurse should be aware of control measures for viral hepatitis which include pre-exposure and post-exposure vaccinations, the u

Occupational hazards to health care workers: diverse, ill-defined, and not fully appreciated.

Health care workers are challenged by an imposing group of occupational hazards. These hazards include exposure to ionizing radiation, stress, injury, infectious agents, and chemicals. The magnitude and diversity of these hazards are not fully appreciated. The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epidemic has created additional occupational hazards and has focused attention on the problem of occupational hazards to health care workers. Concern over the nosocomial transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus has contributed to efforts to implement universal infection control precautions and t

[Could a health service worker with viral hepatitis be a danger to patients? An attempt to assess the problem in Poland].

The paper presents current problems regarding the risk for viral hepatitis transmission to patients by health service workers infected with this disease. In Poland, the scientific assessment of this problem has not as yet been undertaken. Moreover, there is a lack of preventive measures and legal regulations in this area. In our country, the stay in a hospital is accompanied by a high risk of viral hepatitis infection (hospital infections make 60% of all HBV cases). In view of the HBV and HCV preventive programs carried out in many countries, the Polish specialists should turned attention to t
