Poverty is one of the challenges and barriers to children's well-being. Although studies have sought to understand many aspects of children's quality of life, there is still an urgency to comprehend Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among children of the urban poor. Therefore, concentrating on urban poverty in Malaysia, the study aims to investigate the issue by comprehensively analysing how gender, age conceptualised as adolescent category, number of siblings, internet access, and the extent of family healthy living style affect the children's HRQoL measured as psychological, physical, f

The COVID-19 pandemic placed public health measures against infectious diseases at the core of global health challenges, especially in cities where more than half of the global population lives. SARS-CoV-2 is an exposure agent recently added to the network of exposures that comprise the human exposome, i.e. the totality of all environmental exposures throughout one's lifetime. At the same time, the application of measures to tackle SARS-CoV-2 transmission leads to changes in the exposome components and in characteristics of urban environments that define the urban exposome, a complementary con

OBJECTIVE: Evidence suggests that spatial accessibility to primary care is a contributing factor to appropriate health care utilization, with limited primary care access resulting in avoidable hospitalizations and emergency department visits which are burdensome on individuals and our health care system. Limited research, however, has examined the effects on children.
METHODS: We evaluated associations of spatial accessibility to primary care on health care utilization among a sample of 16,709 children aged 0 to 3 years in Philadelphia who were primarily non-White and publicly insured. Log-Po

As the world experiences rapid urban expansion, natural landscapes are being transformed into cities at an alarming rate. Consequently, urbanization is identified as one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time, yet we lack a clear understanding of how urbanization affects free-living organisms. Urbanization leads to habitat fragmentation and increased impervious surfaces affecting for example availability and quality of food. Urbanization is also associated with increased pollution levels that can affect organisms directly, via ecophysiological constraints and indirectly by disrupt

BACKGROUND: The Urban Primary Health Care Project (UPHCP) was implemented by the Government of Bangladesh in response to rapid urbanization and growing inequalities in access to and quality of primary health care. The goal of the project was to improve health status of the urban poor living in city corporations and municipalities through the provision of health care services by NGOs that are contracted through public-private partnership. The first phase of the project started in 1998 and the project is currently in its fourth phase covering more urban areas than the first three phases. This st

BACKGROUND: China is experiencing environmental issues and related health effects due to its industrialization and urbanization. The health effects associated with air pollution are not just a matter of epidemiology and environmental science research, but also an important social science issue. Literature about the relationship of socioeconomic factors with the environment and health factors is inadequate. The relationship between air pollution exposure and health effects in China was investigated with consideration of the socioeconomic factors.
METHODS: Based on nationwide survey data of Chi

BACKGROUND: An understanding of cardiovascular health practices among black patients can provide more comprehensive patient-centered care and reduce health disparities. We studied home blood pressure monitoring in our underserved patient population to determine feasibility of providing automatic blood pressure monitors to our hypertensive patients. We believed that if we provided blood pressure monitors for home use, our patients would increase home blood pressure assessments, frequency of blood pressure assessments, and provide more data on managing their hypertension.

This study examined the associations among smoking tobacco and/or cannabis with alcohol use, depression, disordered eating and healthy behaviors among adolescent girls enrolled in an HIV prevention intervention randomized trial. Baseline self-reported behaviors from 744 sexually active, low-income, urban participants were collected using an audio computer assisted self interview. Girls ranged in age from 15 to 19 years old with a mean age of 16.5. Over 16% of girls reported smoking cigarettes, 41% smoked cannabis and 12% used both substances. Girls who smoked either substance had higher scores

Mental health issues are more prevalent in urban areas, which is increasingly concerning as urbanization accelerates worldwide. Therefore, understanding the various aspects of urban life that influence mental health is crucial. We explored the perspectives on urban mental health of local professionals who are working within the field of mental health and policy in urban settings. Since this group of stakeholders has the professional capacity to shape the way mental health is addressed at the local level, it is particularly important to understand how they conceptualize urban mental health and

Cancer screening behaviors in Muslims are under-researched, and there is limited data on how it relates to their unique cultural and religious beliefs. We assessed cancer prevention and screening-related health needs in the Washington DC area. We developed the needs assessment questionnaires and recruitment strategy in collaboration with key faith leaders from four mosques in our catchment area. A total of 203 participants were recruited through community outreach and engagement approaches and were included in the discussion when developing the needs assessment to ensure questions were religio

Behavioral health diagnoses and service use may differ based on rurality. The purpose of this study was to examine the patterns of mental disorder diagnoses of urban, rural, and remote pediatric populations. This retrospective study used electronic medical records from integrated behavioral health clinics in Nebraska from 2012 to 2013. Bivariate and multivariable models were used to examine the differences in diagnoses. Adolescents with attention deficit and related disorders were more likely to be male, younger, have public insurance and rural/remote residents. Adjustment disorders were assoc

This study investigated the relationships between vacant land and key adverse health behaviors, including smoking, insufficient sleep, and no leisure-time physical activity (No LPA), across census tracts in Chicago, Illinois. Using both global regression and geographically weighted regression (GWR), we evaluated whether neighborhood vacant land ratios (VLRs) were associated with the prevalence of these adverse health behaviors and assessed how these associations varied spatially across the city. We found significant spatial clustering in both vacant land and health behavior indicators, and the

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, the epidemiological and demographic transitions have resulted in nutrition shift characterized by an increased consumption of high energy fast food products. In just over 3 decades, overweight and obesity rates have nearly tripled to currently affecting over a third of the global population. Notwithstanding the ever present under-nutrition burden, sub Saharan Africa (SSA) is witnessing a drastic escalation of overweight and obesity. We aimed to explore the prevalence and associated factors for obesity among residents of Dar es Salaam city in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: In Bangladesh, similar to its other South Asian counterparts, shortage of health workers along with inadequate infrastructure constitute some of the major obstacles for the equitable provision of reproductive healthcare services, particularly among the marginalized and underserved neighbourhoods. However, given the rapidly expanding broadband communication and mobile phone market in the country, the application of eHealth and mHealth technologies offer a window of opportunities to minimise the impact of socioeconomic barriers and promote the utilization of maternal healthcare servi

Tick-borne diseases represent major public and animal health issues worldwide. Ixodes ricinus, primarily associated with deciduous and mixed forests, is the principal vector of causative agents of viral, bacterial, and protozoan zoonotic diseases in Europe. Recently, abundant tick populations have been observed in European urban green areas, which are of public health relevance due to the exposure of humans and domesticated animals to potentially infected ticks. In urban habitats, small and medium-sized mammals, birds, companion animals (dogs and cats), and larger mammals (roe deer and wild bo
