Urbanization, socioeconomic status, and exposure to PM2.5, associated with township-based cerebrovascular disease (CBD) mortality.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Previous research has shown an association between socioeconomic status (SES) and mortality, particularly in chronic diseases. However, limited studies simultaneously examined the relationship between urbanization, SES, exposure to PM2.5, and cerebrovascular disease (CBD) mortality at a township level from 2011 to 2020 in Taiwan. METHODS: Township-level SES data (percentages of low-income and education with college and above) and seven levels of urbanization from 2011 to 2020 were obtained from data sources in Taiwan's central government. Age-standardized CBD mortality r

Impact of demographic and socioeconomic factors and urbanization status on postoperative outcomes following hip arthroscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Hip arthroscopy (HA) is increasingly used to treat femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and labral tears, with growing interest in the role of socioeconomic factors on postoperative outcomes. Prior literature suggests socioeconomic deprivation may worsen patient-reported outcomes (PROMs), but findings regarding the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) and urbanization status remain inconsistent. This study aimed to evaluate the difference in PROMs after HA secondary to symptomatic FAI and hip labral tears based on the residential urbanization status, demographic variables, and Area Depriva

Urban malaria and its determinants in Eastern Ethiopia: the role of Anopheles stephensi and urbanization.

BACKGROUND: Malaria prevention and control strategies have been hampered by urbanization and the spread of Anopheles stephensi. The spread of this vector into Africa further complicates the already complex malaria situation, that could put about 126 million Africans at risk of infection. Hence, this study aimed to assess the determinants of urban malaria, focusing on the role of urbanization and the distribution of An. stephensi in Eastern Ethiopia. METHODS: A matched case control study was conducted among febrile urban residents of Dire Dawa (malaria positive as cases and negative as a contr

Assessing the effect of urbanization on regional-scale surface water-groundwater interaction and nitrate transport.

Identifying regional-scale surface water-groundwater interactions (SGI) is vital for predicting anthropogenic effects on surface water bodies and underlying aquifers. However, large-scale water and nutrient flux studies rely on surface water or groundwater-focused models. This study aims to model the effect of urbanization, which is usually accompanied by high groundwater abstraction and surface water pollution, particularly in the developing world, on a regional-scale SGI and nitrate loading. In the study area, the urban expansion increased by over 3% in the last decade. The integrated SWAT-M

Trend of asthma prevalence among children based on regional urbanization level in Japan; 2006-2019.

Although it has been known that the prevalence of asthma tends to be higher among children in the metropolitan areas of Japan, trends of the prevalence with respect to the regional urbanization level has not been investigated in recent years. We investigated trends in the prevalence of asthma among children and air pollutant concentrations by regional urbanization levels using data from the School Health Statistics Survey in Japan from 2006 to 2019. We calculated the age-standardized prevalence of asthma for each year, gender, regional urbanization level, and annual percent change (APC). In ad

Assessing trace metal concentration in urban soils: a study of urban parks and unforested urban areas.

Urban soils act as long-term reservoirs for trace metals, yet how soil physicochemical properties and anthropogenic pressure interact over time remains poorly understood in medium-sized cities of the Global South. This study evaluates the spatiotemporal dynamics and ecological risks of Ba, Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Ni, Mo, Co, and Cd in urban topsoils, through a 33-week monitoring campaign. Linear Mixed Models (LMM) and Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) were combined to identify retention controls and source contributions. No significant temporal variability was observed (p > 0.05), confirming soil as

Urban Weeds: Supporters of Pollinator Biodiversity in Urban Landscapes.

Urbanization is widely recognized as a major driver of biodiversity loss; however, cities can also provide important refuges for pollinators when diverse and continuous floral resources are available. This study assessed the diversity of spontaneous insect-pollinated flora and its associated pollinator communities across five major urban habitat types (grasslands, road verges, artificial surfaces, wooded areas, and wetlands) in the Mediterranean cities of Pisa, Livorno, and Lucca (central Italy). During a three-year field survey, spontaneous flowering plant species were systematically recorded

The Effect of Urbanization and Sampling Date on Blood Immunophysiology and Haemosporidian Parasitemia in Cardueline Finches.

Urbanization alters habitat structure, resource availability, and influences pathogen transmission, leading to widespread ecological disruptions as it continues to expand. We investigated the impact of urbanization on physiological stress and vector-borne parasite prevalence in 3 Cardueline finch species: house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), lesser goldfinches (Spinus psaltria), and pine siskins (S. pinus). We hypothesized that urbanization level (urban, suburban, and rural) would be associated with higher heterophil to lymphocyte (H/L) ratios, a proxy of stress, and increased parasite preval

Temperature niche and body size condition phenological responses of moths to urbanization in a subtropical city.

Urbanization in temperate climates often advances the beginning and peak of biological events due to multiple factors, especially urban heat islands. However, the effect of urbanization on insect phenology remains understudied in more tropical areas, where temperature may be a weaker phenological cue. We surveyed moths across an urban gradient in a subtropical city weekly for a year to test how impervious surface and canopy cover impact phenology at the caterpillar and adult life stages. For macro-moths, we also examine how these effects vary with life history traits. When pooling all individu

Climate and urbanization drive changes in the habitat suitability of Schistosoma mansoni competent snails in Brazil.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Schistosoma parasites. Schistosoma are obligate parasites of freshwater Biomphalaria snails, so controlling snail populations is critical to reducing transmission risk. As snails are sensitive to environmental conditions, we expect their distribution is significantly impacted by global change. Here, we leveraged machine learning, remote sensing, and 30 years of snail occurrence records to map the historical and current distribution of competent Biomphalaria throughout Brazil. We identified key features influencing the distribution of su

Reemergence of Human Monkeypox and Declining Population Immunity in the Context of Urbanization, Nigeria, 2017-2020.

A monkeypox outbreak in Nigeria during 2017-2020 provides an illustrative case study for emerging zoonoses. We built a statistical model to simulate declining immunity from monkeypox at 2 levels: At the individual level, we used a constant rate of decline in immunity of 1.29% per year as smallpox vaccination rates fell. At the population level, the cohort of vaccinated residents decreased over time because of deaths and births. By 2016, only 10.1% of the total population in Nigeria was vaccinated against smallpox; the serologic immunity level was 25.7% among vaccinated persons and 2.6% in the

Determination of the urbanization and changes in open-green spaces in Nevsehir city through remote sensing.

The physical texture of cities is comprised of built-up spaces, open-green spaces, and transportation arteries. Urbanization is a dynamic that compose of each of the factors above in a fair proportion to human beings and nature. On the other hand, due to the rapid increase in urban population, urbanization has become a concept that poses serious problems for cities in the last decades and this leads a pressure on open-green spaces in urban areas. Open-green spaces have a great importance in improving urban life conditions and balancing the destroyed relations between humans and environment. Fo

The impact of urbanization and population density on childhood Plasmodium falciparum parasite prevalence rates in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Although malaria has been traditionally regarded as less of a problem in urban areas compared to neighbouring rural areas, the risk of malaria infection continues to exist in densely populated, urban areas of Africa. Despite the recognition that urbanization influences the epidemiology of malaria, there is little consensus on urbanization relevant for malaria parasite mapping. Previous studies examining the relationship between urbanization and malaria transmission have used products defining urbanization at global/continental scales developed in the early 2000s, that overestimate

Impact of Socioeconomic Status, Ethnicity, and Urbanization on Risk Factor Profiles of Cardiovascular Disease in Africa.

Africa is a continent characterized by marked ethnic, sociodemographic, and economic diversity, with profound changes in many regions over the past 2 decades. This diversity has an impact on cardiovascular disease presentation and outcomes. Within Africa and within the individual countries, one can find regions having predominantly communicable diseases such as rheumatic heart disease, tuberculous pericarditis, or cardiomyopathy and others having a marked increase in noncommunicable disease such as hypertension and hypertensive heart disease. Ischemic heart disease remains rare in most countri

Influence of urbanization level and Gross Domestic Product on the prevalence of adolescent obesity in Poland.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is considered as a major disease of twenty-first century civilization. Its occurrence in Poland and worldwide has been increasing steadily for many years. Several factors play an important role in the development of overweight and obesity. In addition to the genetic factors and those associated with diseases of the endocrine system and nervous system, the rapidly growing number of obese people is due to improper nutrition. OBJECTIVES: In this paper, authors attempt to justify the prevalence of obesity in Poland among the population of adolescent and young adults aged 15
