Urinary catheters (drainage tubes) are in widespread use. The most common type of long-term catheter is the Foley, which is made from natural or synthetic rubber. Foley catheters are passed into the bladder via the urethra or the suprapubic puncture channel (through the abdominal wall). A simulator for the abdominal wall has been developed to simulate aspects of the interaction between it and a suprapubic catheter. The simulator is based on a slab of ultrasoft elastomer with tensionable reinforcing polyamide filaments. The behaviour of the simulator has been compared with data published. A sof

Culture and sensitivity data were collected on over 500 isolates from indwelling urinary catheters in 23 Nebraska long-term care facilities. Four percent of all nursing home patients had indwelling urinary catheters. The prevalence of bacteriuria in catheterized patients was 79%., and the most frequent isolates were E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Enterococcus species. Thirteen percent of catheterized patients were receiving systemic antibiotics, and 85% had at least one urinary bacterial isolate resistant to the antibiotic being administered. Antibiotic resistance correlated positively with a

BACKGROUND: The effects of non-infectious urinary catheter-related complications such as measurements of indwelling urinary catheter overuse, catheter-related trauma, and urinary retention are not well understood.
METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of 200 patients undergoing general surgery operations. Variables to measure urinary catheter use, trauma, and retention were developed, then surgical cases were abstracted. Inter- and intra-rater reliability were calculated for measure validation.
RESULTS: 129 of 200 (65%) had an indwelling urinary catheter placed at the time of surger

This literature review is part of a larger dissertation project that explores the lived experience of patients using long-term urinary catheters and nurses' attitudes towards urinary catheters. Systematic examination of the literature revealed six relevant primary research studies. These were critically appraised to assess their worth. Further studies were also reviewed, although these were often from neighbouring fields as relatively little research has been undertaken in this field. Findings suggest that there is a disparity between the care that nurses provide to patients with long-term cat

BACKGROUND: Despite the well-recognized role of urinary catheters in nosocomial urinary tract infections, data on risk factors associated with inappropriate urinary catheter use are scarce.
METHODS: A prospective review of electronic medical records of 436 patients admitted to an adult medical-surgical unit between October and December 2007 was performed to examine the appropriateness of urinary catheter use.
RESULTS: The use of 157 urinary catheters in 144 patients was observed. A total of 557 urinary catheter-days were recorded in these patients, of which 175 (31.4%) were found to be inapp

Each year around one million urinary catheters are inserted in NHS hospitals. In around 60% of cases prophylactic antibiotics are prescribed prior to removal. This practice aims to reduce infection risks, but is not supported by evidence. Inappropriate prescribing increases antibiotic resistance, already a serious and worsening problem, and exposes patients to the hazards of antibiotic prescribing. This practice also costs an estimated £1.35-£2.7 million pounds annually. Nurses at all levels can have a huge influence on catherterization rates and catheter management. This can reduce the risks

This mini-review aimed to systematically review the evidence on the effect of catheter valves compared to free drainage into a bag for patients with indwelling urinary catheters. Data sources used were Medline, British Nursing Index, CINAHL, Ahmed, EMBASE, EBM Reviews, the Cochrane Library and reference lists of relevant papers. Papers considered were controlled trials comparing the use of a catheter valve with the catheter bag that were published as a full report, or detailed abstract (containing sufficient information to critique) in Dutch, German or English. Two studies with a total of 122

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is the most common nosocomial infection. Each year, more than 1 million patients in U.S. acute-care hospitals and extended-care facilities acquire such an infection; the risk with short-term catheterization is 5% per day. CAUTI is the second most common cause of nosocomial bloodstream infection, and studies suggest that patients with CAUTI have an increased institutional death rate, unrelated to the development of urosepsis. Novel urinary catheters impregnated with nitrofurazone or minocycline and rifampin or coated with a silver alloy-hydrog

Employing in vitro and in vivo models of catheter-associated infection, biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in artificial urine and bactericidal activity of several classes alone or in combination with a macrolide antibiotic were investigated. In the course of continuous urine flow, bacteria adherent to a Teflon catheter formed microcolonies at 6 h and a biofilm at 24 h. Following 24 h of urine flow, the thickness and the density of the biofilm increased to about 20 microm and 10(8) cfu/mm3, respectively. Of the antibiotics examined, the fluoroquinolones showed the most potent bacteric

More than 70% of hospital-acquired urinary tract infections are related to urinary catheters, which are commonly used for the treatment of about 20% of hospitalized patients. Urinary catheters are used to drain the bladder if there is an obstruction in the tube that carries urine out of the bladder (urethra). During catheter-associated urinary tract infections, microorganisms rise up in the urinary tract and reach the bladder, and cause infections. Various materials are used to fabricate urinary catheters such as silicone, polyurethane, and latex. These materials allow bacteria and fungi to de

The majority of nursing home residents experience some type of urinary incontinence. Other bladder-related disorders (eg, urinary retention and urinary tract infection) also are common in long-term care facilities. Efforts to manage urological conditions such as the use of indwelling catheters and absorbent products, perineal hygiene and care, toileting, and bladder rehabilitation are areas of concern and have become the subject of revised regulations. The intent of recent changes to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services surveyor guidance for incontinence and urinary catheters is to e

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection remains one of the most prevalent, yet preventable, health care-associated infections. General prevention strategies include strict adherence to hand hygiene and antimicrobial stewardship. Duration of urinary catheterization is the most important modifiable risk factor. Targeted prevention strategies include limiting urinary catheter use; physician reminder systems, nurse-initiated discontinuation protocols, and automatic stop orders have successfully decreased catheter duration. Alternatives should be considered. If catheterization is necessary, pro

Urinary catheters are the main cause of hospital-acquired urinary tract infections among inpatients. Healthcare staff can reduce the risk of patients developing an infection by ensuring they give evidence-based care and by removing the catheter as soon as it is no longer necessary. An audit conducted in a Hampshire hospital demonstrated there was poor documented evidence that best practice was being carried out. Therefore a urinary catheter assessment and monitoring tool was designed to promote best practice and produce clear evidence that care had been provided.

Urinary tract infections, most of which are biofilm infections in catheterized patients, account for more than 40% of hospital infections. Bacterial colonization of the urinary tract and catheters causes not only infection but also other complications such as catheter blockage by bacterial encrustation, urolithiasis and pyelonephritis. About 50% of long-term catheterized patients face urinary flow obstruction due to catheter encrustation, but no measure is currently available to prevent it. Encrustation has been known either to result from metabolic dysfunction or to be of microbial origin, wi

Indwelling urinary catheters are utilized in the management of a wide range of conditions both in an acute and a chronic setting. However, utilization of this type of device is associated with a number of issues, including an increased propensity to develop bacteriuria, symptomatic infection and also encrusted deposits on the device. The development of novel biomaterials, incorporation of therapeutic agents and other strategies to minimize the issues associated with these devices are discussed in this review.

The use of catheters in the urinary tract, both in children and adults, has not been without complications. Many procedures performed in the urinary tract, including urethral or suprapubic catheterization of the bladder, urethrography, and ureteral catheterization, have showed complications, one of which is the formation of catheter knots. This complication, although very rare, yet it is very annoying. In this study, we searched (in winter 2002, employing Medline) and reviewed published reports of urinary tract catheter knots, and present measures for prophylaxis, diagnosis and proper manageme
