Evaluation of the accuracy of different methods of monitoring body temperature in anesthetized brown bears (Ursus arctos).

There is some evidence that the handheld rectal thermometer does not accurately measure core temperature in bears. The objective of this study was to compare body temperature measured by the handheld digital thermometer (HDT), deep rectally inserted core temperature capsules (CTCs), and gastrically inserted CTCs in anesthetized brown bears (Ursus arctos). Twenty-two brown bears were immobilized with a combination of zolazepam-tiletamine and xylazine or medetomidine. After immobilization, one CTC was inserted 15 cm deep into the animal's rectum (DRTC) with a standard applicator, and another CTC

The interdisciplinary cooperation of forensic medicine, clinical medicine and palaeozoology: a case of cave bear (Ursus speloeus) bones.

Three pathologically modified bones (cranium, left mandible, iliac bone) of a cave bears (Ursus spelaeus) were found in the Last Glacial deposits (OIS 3) in the caves of the Vel'ká Fatra carst, Slovak republic. Despite of thorough paleontological examination, the bear bones were examined by experts in forensic medicine, traumatology and stomatology, too. The pathological changes were found in the tooth bed on the right side of the maxilla at the place of M1, being interpreted as a result of odontogenic purulent inflammation of soft tissues of tooth bed and surrounding bone. The iliac bone has

Acquired arteriovenous fistula in a grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis).

A captive adult male grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) was evaluated due to multifocal wounds of the skin and subcutaneous tissues sustained as a result of trauma from another grizzly bear. On presentation, one lesion that was located in the perineal region seemed to be a deep puncture with purple tissue protruding from it. This perineal wound did not heal in the same manner or rate as did the other wounds. Twenty-five days after initial detection, substantial active hemorrhage from the lesion occurred and necessitated anesthesia for examination of the bear. The entire lesion was surgical

A trial of intrauterine insemination using a fiberscope in the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).

An intrauterine insemination technique using a fiberscope was investigated in the giant panda. A septal wall was present about 5 cm from the vulva, the external urethral orifice was present in the ventral region, and the entrance (pseudocervix) to the vagina was present in the dorsal region. The uterovaginal region protruded in the dorsal region about 15 cm from the pseudocervix. The external uterine orifice was present in the uterovaginal region, revealing that intrauterine insemination can be easily performed. This technique may greatly contribute to artificial reproduction of the giant pand

Bacteriology of a bear bite wound to a human: case report.

Human contact with bears has become more frequent, as has the resultant bear maulings and bite injuries. We report the bacteriology of a patient bitten by a grizzly bear (Ursus arctos) from the Rocky Mountains foothills area east of Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The patient received field care, including metronidazole and cefazolin. Subsequent deep-wound cultures grew Serratia fonticola, Serratia marcescens, Aeromonas hydrophila, Bacillus cereus, and Enterococcus durans but no anaerobes.

Myofibre changes and capsule formation in mice infected with different strains of Trichinella.

Mice were infected with 4 strains of Trichinella with the purpose of describing muscle changes (M. Gastrocnemius, diaphragma) by light and electron microscopy, paying particular attention to capsule formation in a polar bear isolate (T. no. 13). No differences in myofibre changes or capsule formation were observed between the different strains by light microscopy at 21 and 60 days post infection. Ultrastructural studies of meat samples 60 day post infection with T. no. 13 revealed active capsule formation in muscle fibres, characterized by protrusions and invaginations of the sarcolemma. [Case of trichinosis with lethal outcome due to consumption of brown bear meat in the Krasnoyarsk Territory].

One autopsy case of trichinellosis (in a man of 22) with extensive involvement of the locomotor apparatus (secondary infectious-allergic polymyositis) is presented. Group infection with trichinellosis occurred by eating of insufficiently treated meat of a brown bear which confirms the existence of a natural focus of trichinellosis in the Krasnoyarsky kray.

Epidemiological Insights into Endoparasites of Brown Bears (Ursus arctos) in Greece.

Brown bear populations in Greece face multiple threats, and parasitic infections may pose an additional risk to these vulnerable animals. This study represents the first comprehensive assessment of endoparasite occurrence, prevalence, and seasonality in brown bears in Greece, in relation to geographical location and the animal's different physiological phases. A total of 918 faecal samples were collected over a three-year period from regions with brown bear presence in Greece. For each sample, the date of collection and the coordinates of the site were recorded. Samples were examined using sed

Metabolomics-Guided Genomic Comparisons Reveal Convergent Evolution of Hibernation Genes in Mammals.

Hibernation exists in several unrelated mammalian lineages, allowing animals to survive extreme 0environmental conditions through profound physiological shifts, including reduced metabolic rate, heart rate, respiration, and body temperature. These physiological shifts allow hibernators to rely solely on fat reserves, simultaneously avoiding the adverse effects of prolonged immobility seen in nonhibernating species. Although research on individual species has highlighted key aspects of these adaptations, the genetic basis of hibernation across mammals remains poorly understood. Synthesizing bot

Detection and molecular characterization of Ursicoptes americanus in Georgia, USA black bears (Ursus americanus): Clinical presentations, prevalence, and phylogenetic analysis.

Ursicoptes americanus is a follicular mite that can cause ursicoptic mange in bear species; however, its biology, epidemiology, and clinical significance remain poorly understood. First described in the 1970s from a captive American black bear (Ursus americanus) in Kansas, USA, this mite has since been reported sporadically in both captive and free-ranging black bears, predominately in the western United States. This study aimed to detect and characterize U. americanus in Georgia black bears, assess clinical presentations, estimate prevalence across distinct subpopulations, and analyze phyloge

Translational implications of bradyarrhythmia in hibernating brown bears.

The brown bear Ursus arctos undergoes exceptional physiological adaptions during annual hibernation that minimize energy consumption, including profound decrease in heart rate, cardiac output, and respiratory rate. These changes are completely reversible after the bears reenter into the active state in spring. In this case report, we show episodes of sinus arrest in a hibernating Scandinavian brown bear and in humans, recorded by implantable loop recorders and discuss the possible underlying mechanisms. Lessons learned from cardiac adaptations in hibernating bears might prove useful in the tre

Bone adaptation and osteoporosis prevention in hibernating mammals.

Hibernating bears and rodents have evolved mechanisms to prevent disuse osteoporosis during the prolonged physical inactivity that occurs during hibernation. Serum markers and histological indices of bone remodeling in bears indicate reduced bone turnover during hibernation, which is consistent with organismal energy conservation. Calcium homeostasis is maintained by balanced bone resorption and formation since hibernating bears do not eat, drink, urinate, or defecate. Reduced and balanced bone remodeling protect bear bone structure and strength during hibernation, unlike the disuse osteoporos

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in American Black Bears (Ursus americanus) in Nevada, USA, using an Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay.

Archived serum samples taken between 1997 and 2017 from 170 American black bears (Ursus americanus) in the Lake Tahoe area between California and Nevada, US, were tested for Toxoplasma antibodies to assess the seroprevalence of this agent. Samples were screened using a commercial porcine Toxoplasma (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA]) modified with Protein A/G peroxidase and compared to a traditional fluorescent antibody test. Results were analyzed to determine if there were differences in seroprevalence based on the test used, sex of bears, or habitat usage (urban-suburban vs. wildland

State of knowledge on current exposure, fate and potential health effects of contaminants in polar bears from the circumpolar Arctic.

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is among the Arctic species exposed to the highest concentrations of long-range transported bioaccumulative contaminants, such as halogenated organic compounds and mercury. Contaminant exposure is considered to be one of the largest threats to polar bears after the loss of their Arctic sea ice habitat due to climate change. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive summary of current exposure, fate, and potential health effects of contaminants in polar bears from the circumpolar Arctic required by the Circumpolar Action Plan for polar bear conservati

Listeria monocytogenes at the human-wildlife interface: black bears (Ursus americanus) as potential vehicles for Listeria.

Listeria monocytogenes is the causative agent of the foodborne illness listeriosis, which can result in severe symptoms and death in susceptible humans and other animals. L. monocytogenes is ubiquitous in the environment and isolates from food and food processing, and clinical sources have been extensively characterized. However, limited information is available on L. monocytogenes from wildlife, especially from urban or suburban settings. As urban and suburban areas are expanding worldwide, humans are increasingly encroaching into wildlife habitats, enhancing the frequency of human-wildlife c

A case of giant panda ovarian cancer diagnosis and histopathology.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer is diagnosed clinically by detecting ovarian cancer-related factors and markers. Here, we report a case of giant panda ovarian tumor metastasis with a combination of clinical and histopathological diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: Histopathological studies revealed severe lesions and tumor cells in the ovaries, lungs, spleen, kidneys and perianal tissue. Immunohistochemistry staining showed that the ovarian cancer markers B7-H4, CA125, and HE4 were highly expressed in the lungs, kidneys, spleen, ovaries and perianal tissue. Tumor marker tests detected significantly high

Effects of Ambient Environmental Factors on the Stereotypic Behaviors of Giant Pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).

Stereotypies are commonly observed in zoo animals, and it is necessary to better understand whether ambient environmental factors contribute to stereotypy and how to affect animal welfare in zoo settings. This study investigated the relationships between stereotypic behaviors and environmental factors including ambient temperatures, humidity, light intensity, sound intensity and number of visitors. Seven giant pandas were observed in three indoor enclosures and three outdoor enclosures. Environmental factors were measured for both indoor and outdoor enclosures and the effect they had on stereo
