Uterine Angioleiomyoma: Clinical and Histopathologic Differentiation of an Underrecognized Mimicker of Uterine Leiomyoma.

Angioleiomyoma is an uncommon benign neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that arises from perivascular smooth muscle cells. This soft tissue neoplasm usually occurs in the dermal or subcutaneous tissues of the extremities, head and neck, or trunk with fewer than 40 reported angioleiomyomas arising in the uterine corpus. Herein we report a uterine angioleiomyoma in a 44-year-old G5P4 Hispanic woman with a longstanding history of recurrent abdominal pain, pelvic organ prolapse, abnormal uterine bleeding, anemia, and hypertension. The patient underwent surgical treatment with total laparoscopic hyster

Lipoleiomyosarcoma with pleomorphic liposarcoma of the uterus: Computed tomography findings with pathological correlation. A case report and review of literature.

Uterine lipoleiomyosarcomas (L-LMS) are rare malignant tumors with only few cases descripted in literature. As well, liposarcomas (LPS) arising from uterine corpus are extremely rare since fat tissue is commonly poor or absent in uterus. We report a case of L-LMS of the uterine corpus with an associated component of pleomorphic LPS. As for other female pelvic malignancies, these neoplasms are more common in postmenopausal women and clinical findings are nonspecific. Most frequent signs and symptoms are metrorrhagia and abdominal pain often associated with pelvic distension/mass. We describe di

Increased Risk of Breast Fibroadenomas Among Obese and Postmenopausal Women With Uterine Fibroids.

Introduction Uterine fibroids and breast fibroadenomas are common female benign neoplasms that are similarly derived from a single clonal origin and are modulated by estradiol concentration in blood. However, the association between these neoplasms has not yet been explored. Hence, this study aims to investigate the relationship between uterine fibroids and breast fibroadenomas.  Methods A total of 199 women (cases: 72 women with uterine fibroids, control: 127 women without uterine fibroids) were included in this study. Ultrasound was used to screen for uterine fibroids, and both ultrasound an

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis involving the uterus, mimicking primary mucinous endometrial adenocarcinoma: a case report.

We present a patient with a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, resulting in disseminated peritoneal adenomucinosis (pseudomyxoma peritonei) with uterine involvement, and mimicking primary mucinous endometrial adenocarcinoma. On immunohistochemistry, neoplastic glands were cytokeratin 7-negative and cytokeratin 20-positive, indicating a gastrointestinal origin rather than a primary ovarian mucinous neoplasm. A diagnosis of uterine metastasis of appendiceal origin was made, based on the constellation of clinicopathological findings, that is, preceding appendiceal neoplasm, peritoneal invol

Intraplacental smooth muscle tumor: a case report.

We present the second reported case of a smooth muscle neoplasm involving the placental parenchyma. On gross examination, the tumor easily separated from the uterus and had a whorled cut surface with finger-like extensions into the villous parenchyma, very similar to the previously described case. The differential diagnosis included a primary smooth muscle tumor of the placenta (placental leiomyoma), a primary uterine neoplasm incorporated into the placenta, and a metastatic sarcoma. In this case, the infant was male, and the polymerase chain reaction technique demonstrated the presence of Y c

[Reliability and validity of uterine cancer death certificates in the municipality of Belém, Pará, Brazil].

Belém, Pará State, Brazil, presents high mortality rates for uterine cervical cancer, thus justifying an analysis of the reliability and validity of data on this underlying cause of death. Death certificates for Belém residents who died in 1998-1999 from neoplasms of the uterine cervix, uterine body, or unspecified uterine site, or with mention of such a neoplasm on any line in the death certificate, were selected, amounting to 188 death certificates (DCs). All DCs were submitted to new coding, and reliability analysis was performed by simple agreement and Cohen's kappa. The underlying cause o

Histological and immunohistochemical characterisation of uterine adenocarcinoma in an Asian elephant (Elephas Maximus).

A 56-year-old nulliparous female Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) living at the zoological garden of Naples (Italy), with a clinical history of recurrent colic, was found in agonal state and humane euthanasia was elected. At necropsy the uterine body was moderately increased in size and the lumen was reduced due to a poorly demarcated and infiltrative neoplasm. Furthermore, multiple, whitish, firm nodules were present in both lungs. Histological examination of the uterine mass revealed epithelial cells arranged in tubular or solid pattern infiltrating the endometrium and the muscular layer. Im

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas involving the uterus: a clinicopathologic analysis of 26 cases.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) involving the uterus may be either low-stage neoplasms that probably arise in the uterus (primary) or systemic neoplasms with secondary involvement. In this study, 26 NHL involving the uterus are reported. Ten cases were stage I(E) or II(E) and are presumed to be primary. The mean age of patients at presentation was 55 years (range, 35 to 67 years), and abnormal uterine bleeding was the most frequent complaint (six patients). Nine of 10 tumors involved the cervix. Histologically, eight were diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL); one was follicle center lymphoma, f

SWI/SNF-deficient malignancies of the female genital tract.

Mutations and other molecular events involving subunits of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodelling complex are common in a wide variety of malignancies, including those arising at various sites in the female genital tract. Endometrioid and clear cell carcinomas in the uterine corpus and ovary not uncommonly contain mutations in ARID1A and these also occur in other endometriosis-associated ovarian neoplasms such as seromucinous tumours. In these organs, mutations in SMARCA4, SMARCB1, ARID1A and ARID1B (with subsequent loss of corresponding protein expression as a reliable surrogate) are relatively co

Recurrent cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma of the uterus.

Cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma is a benign smooth muscle neoplasm with an unusual growth pattern that is characterized by intramural dissection within the uterine corpus and often a placental-like appearance macroscopically in its extrauterine component that may be alarming to the surgeon. All cases reported to date have been nonaggressive. We report a case in a 33-yr-old woman who had a history of prolonged uterine bleeding. She was operated upon for uterine leiomyomas, and the diagnosis of cotyledonoid dissecting leiomyoma was made at the time of intraoperative consultation. To maintain f

An unusual case of uterine PEComa presenting with disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas) are mesenchymal neoplasms originating from the perivascular epithelioid cell (PEC) line. The World Health Organization (WHO) further defines PEComa as "a mesenchymal tumor composed of histologically and immunohistochemically distinctive perivascular epithelioid cells". Gynecologic PEComas account for approximately ¼ of the PEComa cases reported in the literature and are histologically characterized by stromal hyalinization with complete or partial circumscription with hyaline background and diffuse, small vessel vascularity (Musella et al., 201

Endometrial Stromal Neoplasm in the Placenta: Report of a Case and Review of the Literature.

Placental neoplasms involving the fetal membranes are exceptionally rare. In leiomyomas and endometrial stromal neoplasms, a uterine origin for nodules in the membranes is also a possibility. We present a case of an incidental endometrial stromal nodule found in the decidua of the free membranes and review the literature.

Comprehensive Review of Uterine Fibroids: Developmental Origin, Pathogenesis, and Treatment.

Uterine fibroids are benign monoclonal neoplasms of the myometrium, representing the most common tumors in women worldwide. To date, no long-term or noninvasive treatment option exists for hormone-dependent uterine fibroids, due to the limited knowledge about the molecular mechanisms underlying the initiation and development of uterine fibroids. This paper comprehensively summarizes the recent research advances on uterine fibroids, focusing on risk factors, development origin, pathogenetic mechanisms, and treatment options. Additionally, we describe the current treatment interventions for uter

High-Grade Uterine Sarcoma: First Report of a MEIS2::FOXO4 Fusion.

Uterine sarcomas are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms ranging from low- to high-grade or undifferentiated. High-grade sarcomas are characterized by various morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular alterations. Here, we report the first description of a patient with uterine sarcoma with a MEIS2::FOXO4 fusion. This tumor showed alternating fascicular and diffuse architecture with a prominent nodular growth displaying striking hyalinization and less prominent myxoid background admixed with more cellular internodular areas. The neoplastic cells ranged from spindled to stellate to epithelioid

Malignant lesions of the female genital tract and peritoneum that may be underdiagnosed.

Female genital tract neoplasms that may have a deceptively benign appearance and selected frankly malignant neoplasms that may be misinterpreted as less aggressive lesions are reviewed. In the uterine cervix, the two major neoplasms in this group are the minimal deviation adenocarcinomas of mucinous and endometrioid types. The latter subtype has only recently been described. Endometrioid adenocarcinomas, usually of the uterine corpus, but occasionally of other sites, may have microglandular patterns that can lead to their misdiagnosis, sometimes as microglandular hyperplasia. Pure squamous cel

Breast Metastasis From Uterine Leiomyosarcoma: A Case Report.

Breast metastases from extramammary malignancies are uncommon. Among these, metastatic spread from uterine leiomyosarcoma is exceptionally rare. Uterine leiomyosarcoma is an aggressive mesenchymal neoplasm characterized by early hematogenous dissemination, most commonly to the lungs, liver, peritoneum, and bone. Breast involvement is distinctly unusual and may mimic primary breast carcinoma both clinically and radiologically. We report the case of a 76-year-old woman who presented with a painless enlarging mass in the upper outer quadrant of the left breast three months after hysterectomy with

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the uterus: a clinicopathologic study of 6 cases emphasizing distinction from aggressive mesenchymal tumors.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an indolent spindle cell proliferation that can histologically resemble various malignant mesenchymal neoplasms; however, it generally behaves as a benign or locally recurrent tumor. Most IMTs involve the lung, mesentery, omentum, or retroperitoneum. We report the clinical and pathologic features of six IMTs of the uterus, one of which was included in a previous report, and emphasize the histologic and immunohistochemical features that distinguish IMTs from uterine spindle cell neoplasms that require aggressive treatment. Recently, translocations of

Reproductive tract neoplasia in adult female Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

Recent reports have highlighted a lower-than-expected prevalence of neoplasia in elephants and suggested mechanisms for cancer resistance. But despite infrequent reports in the literature, uterine neoplasia is common in managed Asian elephants (Elephas maximus). This study is an archival review of reproductive tract neoplasia in 80 adult female Asian elephant mortalities in managed care facilities in the United States from 1988 to 2019. Neoplasms occurred in 64/80 (80%) of cases. Most were in the uterus (63/64; 98%) with only a single case of ovarian neoplasia. Myometrial leiomyomas were prese

First Case Report of Uterine Leiomyosarcoma Diagnosed After Transcervical Fibroid Ablation.

Background: Uterine fibroids are benign monoclonal neoplasms of the myometrium, representing the most common female pelvic neoplasms globally. Treatments may be invasive, such as hysterectomy and myomectomy, non-invasive, such as medical therapy or focused ultrasound, or minimally invasive, such as transcervical radiofrequency ablation (TFA). To date, more than 12,000 women have been treated worldwide using TFA with the Sonata® System.
