The Last Mile-Community Engagement and Conditional Incentives to Accelerate Polio Eradication in Pakistan: Study Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental Trial.

Poliomyelitis is a condition of great concern and is endemic in only two countries of the world: Pakistan and Afghanistan. Community mobilization plays a vital role in raising awareness and can help reduce polio vaccine refusals. The objective of this study will be to decrease polio vaccine refusals and zero-dose vaccines by motivating behavior change through the provision of conditional-collective-community-based incentives (C3Is) based on a reduction in polio vaccine refusals. The project will adopt a pretest/post-test quasi-experimental design with two intervention high-risk union councils

The Moderating Role of Demographic Variables in the Effect of Health Literacy on Anti-Vaccination Sentiment.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Vaccine hesitancy continues to pose a challenge to public health, and health literacy has been suggested as a potential factor influencing vaccination attitudes. However, the nature of this relationship and the role of sociodemographic characteristics remain to be clarified. This study aimed to examine the association between health literacy and vaccine refusal and to explore whether this relationship is moderated by education level, age, income, place of residence, and gender. METHODS: A cross-sectional nationwide online survey was conducted among 413 adults living in T

The smallpox vaccine: a multidimensional model of choice.

Following September 11, 2001, the U.S. government increased its efforts to prepare for future attacks, including those using dangerous biological agents such as smallpox. The smallpox vaccination program called for vaccinating military personnel and smallpox response teams, including healthcare workers and other first responders. The program of vaccinating healthcare workers was largely unsuccessful; few individuals volunteered to be vaccinated, highlighting the importance of understanding the factors that influence choice regarding this complex medical decision. This study examined stated cho

Understanding vaccine hesitancy in polio eradication in northern Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy constitutes a major threat to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), and to further expansion of routine immunisation. Understanding hesitancy, leading in some cases to refusal, is vital to the success of GPEI. Re-emergence of circulating wild poliovirus in northern Nigeria in mid-2016, after 24months polio-free, gives urgency to this. But it is equally important to protect and sustain the global gains available through routine immunisation in a time of rising scepticism and potential rejection of specific vaccines or immunisation more generally. METHODS

A re-emerging infection?

A 38-year-old female with a two-week history of amoxicillin use for fever, cough, and coryza presented with two days of erythematous chest macules. Despite discontinuation of the antibiotic, her rash continued; measles was diagnosed with IgM titers. Three weeks previously she had returned from China. She had received only one vaccination despite travel to this measles-endemic area. Vaccination and herd immunity have reduced the measles prevalence in America by more than 99%; travel, foreign adoption, and refusal of vaccination have, however, increased the risk.

Childhood vaccine beliefs reported by Somali and non-Somali parents.

BACKGROUND: In 2011, an outbreak of measles in Minnesota was traced back to an unvaccinated Somali child. The purpose of this project was to (1) ascertain whether Somali parents are more likely than non-Somalis to refuse childhood vaccinations, particularly the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and (2) determine what factors influence the decision not to vaccinate. METHODS: We explored parental perceptions and utilization of vaccines through a survey distributed to a convenience sample of Somali and non-Somali parents of children ≤5 years old in a family medicine clinic in Minneapolis, MN.

Did the call for boycott by the Catholic bishops affect the polio vaccination coverage in Kenya in 2015? A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Polio eradication is now feasible after removal of Nigeria from the list of endemic countries and global reduction of cases of wild polio virus in 2015 by more than 80%. However, all countries must remain focused to achieve eradication. In August 2015, the Catholic bishops in Kenya called for boycott of a polio vaccination campaign citing safety concerns with the polio vaccine. We conducted a survey to establish if the coverage was affected by the boycott. METHODS: A cross sectional survey was conducted in all the 32 counties that participated in the campaign. A total of 90,157

Perceived changes in health care personnel attitudes toward influenza vaccination since the COVID-19 pandemic: A Los Angeles County hospital survey.

Influenza vaccination among health care personnel has declined nationwide since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. We surveyed acute care hospitals within Los Angeles County to examine worker attitudes regarding influenza vaccination and the impact of COVID-19. Comparing before and during the pandemic, we found increased safety and efficacy concerns, and decreased perception of disease severity and risk of influenza, suggesting that redundancy of established COVID-19 measures and pandemic fatigue may have contributed to vaccine refusal.

Confidence in the National Immunization Program among parents in Sweden 2016 - A cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination coverage for infant vaccinations in the Swedish National Immunization Program (NIP) has been high for more than a decade, with approximately 97% of 2-year-old children fully immunized. Vaccination coverage against Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been around 80% since introduction for girls in 2012. This indicates high parental confidence in the NIP, but as seen in other European countries rapid shifts in confidence may occur. This study examined vaccine confidence and attitudes towards vaccinations among parents in the Swedish population. METHODS: A web-based survey wa

Comparative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parental behaviour towards childhood vaccination in Israel and the United Kingdom: A self-controlled matched cross-sectional study.

The long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on routine childhood vaccination remains unclear. We aimed to determine whether parents with children born both before and after the pandemic changed their vaccination decisions with regard to Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) and Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTP)-containing vaccines. This self-controlled, matched cross-sectional study compared parental attitudes and behaviors towards childhood vaccination before and after the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom (UK) and Israel. We included 777 parents in the UK and 1270 in Israel, each with childre

COVID-19 vaccine acceptance rates and predictors among the Egyptian general population and Healthcare workers, the intersectionality of age and other factors.

The promise of COVID-19 vaccines in ending the pandemic can only be achieved by overcoming the challenge of vaccine refusal. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are the trusted advisors of vaccination decisions. Recommendations for vaccinating children against COVID-19 are recently gaining more public health attention due to the role of children in disease transmission and associated morbidities. Vaccination is one of the first medical decisions parents or guardians make on behalf of their children. To investigate the determinants associated with vaccine acceptability among the general population throug
