Vaccine-preventable diseases and vaccination among Italian healthcare workers: a review of current literature.

Protection of healthcare workers (HCWs) from biological hazards in the workplace has the added benefit of contributing to the quality of patient care and patient safety. Vaccinated HCWs act as a barrier against the spread of infections and maintain essential healthcare delivery during outbreaks. In Italy, specific recommendations for vaccination of HCWs are issued by the Ministry of Health within the framework of the National Immunization Prevention Plan. These recommendations provide advice regarding HCW vaccination for hepatitis B, influenza, pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and

Socioeconomic Status Is Associated With Antibody Levels Against Vaccine Preventable Diseases in the Netherlands.

Background: We investigated whether low socioeconomic status (SES), which is associated with reduced health and life expectancy, might play a role in increased risk for infectious diseases. Therefore, we explored the association between SES and immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels against various pathogens. Methods: We analyzed the association between SES [educational level and net household income (NHI)] and serum IgG concentration against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Haemophilus influenzae type B (HiB), pneumococcus, meningococcus serogroup C (MenC), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) collected withi

Resurgence of Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in the United States: Anesthetic and Critical Care Implications.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) such as measles and pertussis are becoming more common in the United States. This disturbing trend is driven by several factors, including the antivaccination movement, waning efficacy of certain vaccines, pathogen adaptation, and travel of individuals to and from areas where disease is endemic. The anesthesia-related manifestations of many VPDs involve airway complications, cardiovascular and respiratory compromise, and unusual neurologic and neuromuscular symptoms. In this article, we will review the presentation and management of 9 VPDs most relevant to a

Serosurveillance of vaccine preventable diseases and hepatitis C in healthcare workers from Lao PDR.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Healthcare workers (HCW) have an increased risk of exposure to infectious diseases and are a potential source of infections for their patients. The Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) has no national policy regarding HCW vaccinations and routine vaccination coverage is low within the general population. This cross-sectional serostudy determines the level of exposure and risk of infection in Lao HCW against 6 vaccine preventable diseases and hepatitis C. METHODS: 1128 HCW were recruited from 3 central, 2 provincial and 8 district hospitals. Sera were tested by ELISA

Teenagers' understandings of and attitudes towards vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: To examine immunisation information needs of teenagers we explored understandings of vaccination and vaccine-preventable diseases, attitudes towards immunisation and experiences of immunisation. Diseases discussed included nine for which vaccines are currently offered in the UK (human papillomavirus, meningitis, tetanus, diphtheria, polio, whooping cough, measles, mumps and rubella), and two not currently included in the routine UK schedule (hepatitis B and chickenpox). METHODS: Twelve focus groups conducted between November 2010 and March 2011 with 59 teenagers (29 girls and 30 b

Estimating meningitis hospitalization rates for sentinel hospitals conducting invasive bacterial vaccine-preventable diseases surveillance.

The World Health Organization (WHO)-coordinated Global Invasive Bacterial Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (IB-VPD) sentinel hospital surveillance network provides data for decision making regarding use of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine, both recommended for inclusion in routine childhood immunization programs worldwide. WHO recommends that countries conduct sentinel hospital surveillance for meningitis among children aged <5 years, including collection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for laboratory detection of bacterial etiologies. Vaccination status of children considered for renal transplants: missed opportunities for vaccine preventable diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Infectious diseases, even vaccine preventable ones, might affect transplanting and the life course in pediatric solid-organ recipients. Owing to immunosuppression and decreased antibody production, susceptibility to infections is increased in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was designed to assess the vaccination and antibody status of the pediatric renal transplant patients. Fifty-one patients who were admitted to the regional transplant center for renal transplant were retrospectively evaluated. Patient 's vaccination charts were examined, and their immun

Status of immunity for vaccine--preventable diseases in children after hematopoietic stem cells transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: patients treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) lose immune memory accumulated through a lifetime. They are at increased risk of developing infections with microorganisms such as Haemophilus influenza, Streptococcus pneumoniae and others for which vaccines are available. Therefore, all patients after HSCT should be routinely revaccinated. Systemic reimmunization after HSCT is a relatively neglected area especially in countries which have not national recommendations and there is lack of systemic regulations in health care system. OBJECTIVE: the rate of immun

Seroprevalence status of vaccine-preventable diseases in migrants living in shelter centers in Barcelona, Spain.

INTRODUCTION: Almost 281 million people were living in a foreign country in 2022, and more than 100 million were displaced because of war conflicts and human right violations. Vaccination coverage of infectious diseases in migrants from some disadvantaged settings could be lower than reception countries populations, consequently seroprevalence studies and better access to vaccination could contribute to reducing these differences. METHODS: A descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted including migrants, living ≤5 years in the reception country and ≥16 years old, who request

A low-cost approach to measure the burden of vaccine preventable diseases in urban areas.

We piloted a low-cost approach to measure the disease burden of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hib and Salmonella Typhi by leveraging the existing infrastructure of high performing microbiology laboratories at two large paediatric hospitals in Dhaka Bangladesh, and assessing the hospital utilization of the catchment population of these hospitals for different syndromes. S. Typhi was the most common bacterium identified in culture and accounted for an estimated 211 hospitalizations per 100,000 children <5 years of age per year. Meningitis due to S. pneumoniae was the most common cause of mortality a

Serologic testing to verify the immune status of internationally adopted children against vaccine preventable diseases.

Definitive immunization guidelines for internationally adopted children are lacking. We examined whether these children had serologic evidence of protection against vaccine-preventable diseases. For children with ≥3 vaccine doses, overall protection was high for diphtheria (85%), tetanus (95%), polio (93%), hepatitis B (77%), and Hib (67%). For children ≥12 months of age with ≥1 dose of measles, mumps, or rubella vaccines, 95%, 72%, and 94% were immune, respectively. Children without immunization documentation had lower immunity. Serologic testing was useful in verifying the immunization statu
