Determining health-related quality of life among children with malaria in Kenya: does the choice of EQ-5D value set matter?

PURPOSE: Malaria remains a major public health issue, especially for children under five, yet health-related quality of life (HRQoL) data needed for cost-effectiveness analyses are limited. This study assesses malaria’s impact in Kenyan children and examine how different EQ-5D value sets affect utility estimates. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in western Kenya. From June to September 2024, caregivers completed the proxy-reported EQ-5D-5L questionnaire. In the absence of a Kenyan value set, utility scores were estimated using both Ethiopian, Ugandan, and Dutch value sets. Differ

The Added Value of Remote Technology in Cardiac Rehabilitation on Physical Function, Anthropometrics, and Quality of Life: Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) cause most deaths globally and can reduce quality of life (QoL) of rehabilitees with cardiac disease. The risk factors of CVDs are physical inactivity and increased BMI. With physical activity, it is possible to prevent CVDs, improve QoL, and help maintain a healthy body mass. Current literature shows the possibilities of digitalization and advanced technology in supporting independent self-rehabilitation. However, the interpretation of the results is complicated owing to the studies' high heterogeneity. In addition, the added value of this technology

Life-threatening heart failure in meningococcal septic shock in children: non-invasive measurement of cardiac parameters is of important prognostic value.

UNLABELLED: Heart failure is a life-threatening complication of fulminant meningococcal septic shock (MSS). Depression of left ventricular function, in particular, is thought to be due to circulating meningococcal endotoxin. Myocardial failure leads to ventricular dilation expressed by an increased left-ventricle end-diastolic diameter (LVED). With ultrasonography, LVED can be accurately measured as well as the shortening fraction (SF). In an evaluative study we investigated the accuracy of the SF and compared it to the accuracy of the Glasgow meningococcal septicemia prognostic score (GMSPS)

The predictive value of polysomnography combined with quality of life for treatment decision of children with habitual snoring related to adenotonsillar hypertrophy.

PURPOSE: Both surgical treatment and non-surgical treatment are suggested by clinicians for children with habitual snoring related to adenotonsillar hypertrophy; However, how should the decision be made remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate potential predictors for the treatment decision, i.e., surgical treatment vs wait and see in children with habitual snoring related to adenoidal and/or tonsillar hypertrophy. METHODS: Children with complaints of snoring and/or apnea associated with adenotonsillar hypertrophy who received polysomnography (PSG) monitoring at our Hos

Geriatric screening tools are of limited value to predict decline in functional status and quality of life: results of a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Geriatric screening tools are increasingly implemented in daily practice, especially in the oncology setting, but also in primary care in some countries such as the Netherlands. Nonetheless, validation of these tools regarding their ability to predict relevant outcomes is lacking. In this study we evaluate if geriatric screening tools predict decline in functional status and quality of life after one year, in a population of older cancer patients and an older primary care population without cancer with a life expectancy of at least six months. METHODS: Older cancer patients and a

Beyond CE Marking: The Need for Life-Cycle Health Technology Assessment of Medical Devices for Patient Safety and Health-System Value.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Medical devices are essential to modern healthcare, but their adoption is often driven by regulatory conformity, clinical enthusiasm, procurement pressures and vendor-led innovation rather than systematic evaluation of comparative value. CE marking and related regulatory mechanisms are necessary for market access; however, they do not determine whether a device improves patient-related outcomes compared with existing alternatives, whether its benefits justify its total costs, or whether it can be implemented safely in routine care. This narrative review examines why medi

Prognostic Value of Number of Metastatic Nodes in School-Age Children and Adolescents With Papillary Thyroid Cancer: A Real-Life Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: How metastatic nodal burden influences the prognosis of school-age children and adolescents (SACAs) with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) remains unclear. We investigated the independent impact of numerical metastatic nodal burden on clinical outcomes in these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This multicenter retrospective cohort study included SACAs with PTC aged 18 years and older who had undergone total thyroidectomy and radioiodine therapy across 12 nuclear medicine departments in China. Persistent biochemical and structural diseases were evaluated. The independent role of metas

Tragedy or ordeal? How reshaping discourses can contribute to reimagining approaches to care and the value of life in times of crisis.

Attending to the discourses surrounding a crisis can offer important insights into who and what is valued in society. The COVID-19 pandemic offers just this opportunity as it represents a modern societal crisis. Our former work, which examined media discourses surrounding life in LTC during the COVID-19 pandemic, revealed a discourse that framed life in LTC as tragic. In this study, using a life story approach, we explore how, if at all, the tragedy discourse shifts when older persons in LTC (n = 15) are invited to share their experiences of COVID-19. Our analysis revealed three interrelated c

Predictive value of notched P wave for life-threatening arrhythmias in patients with Brugada syndrome: Insights from a multicenter prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Risk stratification for ventricular fibrillation (VF) in Brugada syndrome (BrS) remains a major clinical challenge. Atrial fibrillation is relatively common in BrS, suggesting that atrial conduction abnormalities may be related to arrhythmogenesis. A notched P wave on the surface electrocardiogram (ECG) reflects atrial conduction delay, but its prognostic significance for VF in BrS has not been fully established. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the association between notched P waves and life-threatening arrhythmic events in patients with BrS. METHODS: We analyzed 510 pat

Japanese value set for the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy Eight Dimension (FACT-8D) cancer-specific preference-based quality of life instrument.

PURPOSE: The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy General (FACT-G) questionnaire is frequently used to assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in cancer patients. However, data obtained using the FACT-G cannot be directly used to calculate quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). The newly developed FACT Eight Dimensions (FACT-8D) is a preference-based measure that generates health utilities scores from 9 of the 27 FACT-G items, representing eight HRQOL domains (Nausea, Pain, Fatigue, Sleep, Work, Worry, Sadness, Support from family/friends). This study aimed to create a Japanese FACT-8D

Reference values for N-terminal Pro-brain natriuretic peptide in premature infants during their first weeks of life.

The aim of our study was to observe the temporal distribution of serum N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in premature infants of ≤ 31 weeks of gestational age (GA) during the first weeks of life. NT-proBNP values of 118 preterm infants born ≤ 31 weeks GA were determined during the first week of life, after 4 ± 1 weeks of life, and at a corrected GA of 36 ± 2 weeks. Infants were divided into two groups: those without relevant complications and those with complications related to prematurity. NT-proBNP values of infants without complications define our exploratory reference va

The value of bioelectrical impedance analysis and phase angle in the evaluation of malnutrition and quality of life in cancer patients--a comprehensive review.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and especially its derived parameter phase angle have been widely used in different populations. The variability of BIA measures has often been cited as a major limitation for its clinical use in evaluating nutritional status and overall health of patients. Cancer patients often present with malnourishment and cachexia, which complicate the course of treatment and affect outcomes. PubMed, CINAHL, EBSCO and Cochrane Library have been searched for relevant publications in English for BIA in cancer patients. Out of 197 total results, 27 original research art

Perfusion Index in Preterm Infants during the First 3 Days of Life: Reference Values and Relation with Clinical Variables.

BACKGROUND: The perfusion index (PI) derived from pulse oximetry readings represents the ratio of pulsatile (arterial blood) and nonpulsatile contributors to infrared light absorption. PI has been shown to correlate with cardiac performance. In theory, PI is readily available on every pulse oximeter; therefore, no additional sensors or infant handling are required. Currently, reference values are lacking in (preterm) neonates and the association with common clinical conditions is unclear. OBJECTIVES: To establish reference values for the PI in premature infants and at the same time determine

Patients' health-related quality-of-life and health state values for motor neurone disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Motor neurone disease (MND) has a severe impact on patient quality of life, especially in later stages of the disease. This study assesses the health-related quality of life (HRQL) of MND patients, and for the first time elicits health state values from patients for their present health state. A structured interview was conducted with 77 patients. Patients completed a disease specific health status measure (ALSAQ-40), a generic health status measure (EuroQol EQ-5D), a visual analogue scale (VAS) and a standard gamble (SG) exercise. The ALSAQ-40 was sensitive to disease severity. Patients' mean
