Umbilical cord insertion to the lower uterine segment is a risk factor for vasa previa.

The perinatal mortality rate of vasa previa is high if it is not prenatally diagnosed. Systematic strategies for vasa previa screening have been recommended. In this paper, three cases of vasa previa diagnosed prenatally, with umbilical cord inserted to the lower segment of the uterus, are presented. It should be considered that umbilical cord insertion to the lower uterine segment is a high risk for vasa previa. Ultrasound screening for cord insertion will make it possible to do efficient and certain detection of vasa previa.

Fetoscopic laser ablation vs standard management for Type-II and Type-III vasa previa.

OBJECTIVE: The standard management (SM) for vasa previa (VP) includes antepartum inpatient admission at 28-32 weeks' gestation followed by Cesarean delivery at 34-37 weeks. Case reports and case series have reported on fetoscopic laser ablation (FLA) as an alternative management approach for Types-II and -III VP. This study compared maternal and neonatal outcomes in patients with Type-II or -III VP who underwent third-trimester FLA with those who underwent SM. METHODS: This was a cohort study of all antenatally diagnosed cases of Type-II or -III VP identified by ultrasound at, or referred to,

Treatment Outcomes after Fetoscopic Laser Ablation of Type II versus Type III Vasa Previa.

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal outcomes were compared for patients treated with fetoscopic laser ablation for vasa previa (VP) type II versus III. In type II VP, fetal vessels connect the main placenta to an accessory lobe, and in type III, these vessels exit and reenter a single-lobed placenta without velamentous cord insertion. Vessel ablation can be challenging in the presence of an accessory placental lobe. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study (2013-2025) of women with singleton pregnancies ≥31 gestational weeks who underwent laser ablation treatment for VP type II vs. III. RESULTS: O

Prenatal diagnosis and postnatal outcome of Type-III vasa previa: systematic review of literature.

OBJECTIVE: Type-III vasa previa (VP) is a rare form of VP, not necessarily associated with other placental or vascular anomalies, in which aberrant vessels run from the placenta to the amniotic membranes, near the internal cervical os, before returning to the placenta. Early diagnosis of Type-III VP is important but technically challenging. The objective of this study was to gather the current available evidence on the perinatal diagnosis and outcome of Type-III VP. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature on the perinatal diagnosis of atypical Type-III VP was carried out in PubMed, MED

Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of vasa previa: ultrasound findings and obstetric outcome in ten cases.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the specificity of sonographic diagnosis of vasa previa and pregnancy outcome in sonographically diagnosed cases. METHODS: We prospectively collected cases of vasa previa diagnosed by color Doppler sonography. Delivery by elective Cesarean section after demonstration of fetal pulmonary maturity and prior to the onset of labor was recommended unless obstetric complications supervened. Data regarding maternal obstetric courses and newborn status were collected. RESULTS: Eleven cases of vasa previa without placenta previa were diagnosed among 33 208 women over an 8-year per

Clinical characteristics of a novel "Type 3" vasa previa: case series at a single center.

OBJECTIVE: Vasa previa is a condition in which fetal blood vessels are located on fetal membranes within 2 cm of the internal cervical os. Vasa previa has been classified into two types: Type 1, in which vessels connect a velamentous umbilical cord to the placenta, and Type 2, in which vessels connect the lobes of a bilobed placenta or the placenta to a succenturiate lobe. However, there are also atypical cases that cannot be classified into these two types. These cases are manifested by a center or marginal cord insertion with a normal shaped placenta, and fetal vessels were also located on m

Prenatal diagnosis of vasa previa presenting as amniotic band. 'A not so innocent amniotic band'.

We describe a case in which the early antepartum diagnosis of vasa previa was made in an asymptomatic patient by means of color Doppler ultrasonography. A woman, gravida 3 para 1 at 22 weeks' gestation, was diagnosed as having an anterior low-lying placenta, a velamentous cord insertion and an amniotic band with vessels traversing the internal cervical os towards a succenturiate lobe. At the 39th week, a Cesarean section was performed and a healthy female baby was born. Transvaginal color Doppler flow imaging facilitated the accurate diagnosis of this condition.

Incorporation of vasa previa screening into a routine anomaly scan: A single center cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Vasa previa (VP), defined as unprotected fetal vessels traversing the membranes over the cervix, is associated with a high perinatal mortality when undiagnosed prenatally. Conversely, prenatal diagnosis with ultrasound and cesarean delivery before the membranes rupture is associated with excellent outcomes. However, controversy exists regarding screening for VP. In the UK, routine screening for VP is not recommended. The objective of this study was to report the incidence of VP and our experience in the detection of VP with a universal screening protocol at the time of the second

Core outcome set for studies on pregnant women with vasa previa (COVasP): a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Vasa previa is a condition where fetal blood vessels run unprotected in the membranes, outside the umbilical cord, and cross the internal opening of the cervix. During rupture of membranes, these vessels can rupture and put the baby at serious risk of severe blood loss and death. Numerous studies are being conducted to improve diagnostic modalities and establish clear management plans to improve pregnancy outcomes. However, the lack of a standardised set of outcomes for studies on vasa previa makes it difficult to compare study findings and draw meaningful conclusions. Through th

Prenatal diagnosis and management of vasa previa in twin pregnancies: a case series and systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Twin pregnancies are at higher risks of velamentous cord insertion and vasa previa. In vitro fertilization is an additional risk factor of abnormal cord insertion and thus the incidence of vasa previa is likely to increase over the next decades. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the role of ultrasound imaging in optimizing the management of twins diagnosed with vasa previa antenatally. STUDY DESIGN: We searched our database for twin pregnancies diagnosed with vasa previa and managed antenatally using measurements of cervical length and performed a systematic review of articles tha

Type Three Vasa Previa Diagnosed in Late Pregnancy Despite Apparent Placental Migration: A Case Report.

Type three vasa previa is a rare and potentially fatal obstetric condition in which unprotected fetal blood vessels traverse the cervical membranes near the internal os despite normal placental morphology and umbilical cord insertion. Owing to an absence of classical risk factors, the prenatal diagnosis of vasa previa is particularly challenging; therefore, the condition may go undiagnosed, especially after apparent placental migration. A 36-year-old multiparous woman was referred to our clinic at 33 weeks and three days of gestation with suspicions of a low-lying placenta. Follow-up sonograph

Counseling and Educating About Vasa Previa Using Intraoperative Photographs of Vessel Rupture: A Case Report.

Vasa previa describes vessels that are unprotected by Wharton's jelly and traverse over or near the endocervix. Rupture of membranes or labor increases the risk of vessel rupture, followed by rapid fetal exsanguination. Learners are often taught to manage this condition by case scenarios and simulations. We present a case of type I vasa previa where intraoperative photographs demonstrate the potentially catastrophic rupture of membranes into the unprotected fetal vessels during a scheduled cesarean delivery. We recommend using intraoperative photographs to educate learners and counsel patients

A Case of Vasa Previa Diagnosed at Term: Elective Caesarean Section with Good Feto-Maternal Outcomes.

Vasa previa is a condition where unprotected fetal vessels, neither by placenta nor umbilical cord, lie within the membranes over the internal cervical ostium and beneath the presenting part of the fetus. Due to this condition, the membranous vessels pose a higher risk of being compressed or ruptures and could lead to fetal demise, exsanguination, or even fetal death. In this case report, we reported a case of a 36-year-old woman, G3P2A0, at term gestation and oblique lie. Early prenatal diagnosis using transvaginal ultrasound could increase the survival rate of the fetus if followed by suffic

A strategy for reducing the mortality rate from vasa previa using transvaginal sonography with color Doppler.

Vasa previa is a cause of sudden unanticipated fetal death, with a fetal mortality of 33-100%. Transvaginal sonography (TVS) and color Doppler may aid in making the diagnosis antenatally, allowing elective Cesarean delivery, thereby avoiding fetal death from exsanguination which would occur if the membranes were allowed to rupture in labor. Whilst it is not feasible to screen all pregnant women for vasa previa, antenatal examination with TVS and color Doppler of women at risk, specifically those with low-lying placentas, bi-lobed, multi-lobed and succenturiate-lobed placentas, multiple pregnan
