Rat venular pressure-diameter relationships are regulated by sympathetic activity.

The hypothesis that the pressure-diameter relationship of intestinal venules in rats is primarily determined by sympathetic nervous system activity was tested. The pressure-diameter relationship of the smallest to largest diameter (20-100 microns) intestinal venules of the rat was measured at rest, during hemorrhage to increase sympathetic neural activity, and during saline volume expansion to decrease sympathetic activity. During hemorrhage, the diameter of all venules decreased approximately 10% at 10 mmHg venous pressure, and the slope of the pressure-diameter relationship increased approxi

The effects of dihydroergotamine in patients with head injury and raised intracranial pressure.

In the first study 6 patients with raised intracranial pressure due to brain oedema following head injury were given dihydroergotamine because of low perfusion pressure. The intracranial pressure fell simultaneously with the increase in arterial pressure. The intracranial pressure fell from 24 +/- 2 mmHg by a maximum of 12 +/- 1 mmHg after a single intravenous injection of 0.25 mg of dihydroergotamine and remained at a low level for 35-70 min before stabilizing at a new level 5 +/- 1 mmHg below the baseline. The initial rapid and marked decrease in intracranial pressure may be the result of a

Neurogenic hypertension: etiology and surgical treatment. II. Observations in an experimental nonhuman primate model.

In a companion paper (Ann Surg 1985; 201(3):391-398), clinical data which suggest that neurogenic hypertension may be caused by arterial compression of the left medulla oblongata was presented. A chronic pathophysiologic animal model of neurogenic hypertension using a substitute for arterial pulsation, the neurovascular compression simulator (NCS), was developed. This paper presents data that demonstrate how development of hypertension in a nonhuman primate baboon (5 subject animals, 5 control animals) can be caused by the NCS, and the blood pressure can subsequently return to normal following

Ultrafiltration in the critically ill patient: a framework for personalized care.

Fluid overload is common after resuscitation in critically ill patients and is independently associated with unfavorable outcomes. Ultrafiltration (UF) during renal replacement therapy is a common strategy to reverse this condition. Nevertheless, the optimal timing, dose, and safety limits remain unclear. Observational studies suggest a U-shaped relationship between net UF rate and mortality, highlighting a narrow therapeutic window. Insufficient UF prolongs exposure to congestion, whereas excessive UF may precipitate hemodynamic instability and tissue hypoperfusion. This phenomenon, often lab

Phenotyping Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction Using Pulmonary Artery Pulsatility Index and Pulmonary Arterial Capacitance.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular dysfunction (RVD), driven by right ventricular (RV) afterload, is prognostic in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Hemodynamic phenotyping based on RVD and RV afterload may provide useful information for the management of HFpEF. This study investigated the prognostic impacts of the pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PAPi) and pulmonary arterial capacitance (PAC) in patients with HFpEF. METHODS AND RESULTS: A retrospective cohort of 246 HFpEF patients who underwent right heart catheterization was analyzed. Patients were divided

Endoscopic sympathectomy impairs forearm cutaneous vascular conductance and sweating responses during passive whole body heat stress.

Hyperhidrosis is characterized by excessive sweating, typically in the palmar and axillary regions. Individuals with severe cases of hyperhidrosis can be treated surgically via endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy to disrupt the neural connection between the spinal cord and the affected regions, thereby attenuating sweating in the hyperhidrotic regions. However, the effects of this procedure on skin blood flow and sweating responses to whole body heat stress in regions not targeted by the sympathectomy, such as the forearm, are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that surgical sympathectomy attenua

Acute absolute vasodilatation is associated with a lower vascular wall stiffness in pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Acute vasoreactivity testing (VT) is considered mandatory in the diagnostic work-up of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). We studied the relation between the acute absolute arterial vasodilatation and the severity of vascular remodeling estimated by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in patients with idiopathic PAH. METHODS: Simultaneous right heart catheterization and IVUS of the pulmonary artery (PA) were performed both in basal conditions and during short-term intravenous epoprostenol infusion in nineteen idiopathic PAH patients. Lung diffusing capacity and exercise in subjects with previous high altitude pulmonary oedema.

Subjects with a history of high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) have increased pulmonary artery pressure and more ventilation-perfusion (V'A/Q') inhomogeneity with hypoxia and exercise. We used noninvasive methods to determine whether there are differences in the pulmonary diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DL,CO) and cardiac output (Q') during exercise, indicative of a more restricted pulmonary vascular bed in subjects with a history of HAPE. Eight subjects with radiographically documented HAPE and five controls with good altitude tolerance had standard pulmonary function testing and we

Endothelins as regulators of vascular tone in man.

1. The vascular pharmacology, physiological relevance and pathophysiological roles of the endothelium-derived vasoconstrictor peptide endothelin-1 have been unclear. These issues were investigated, in vivo in man, using infusion of drugs into the brachial artery or dorsal hand vein, with responses measured by forearm plethysmography and the hand vein displacement technique respectively. 2. Endothelin-1 is a potent and sustained constrictor of resistance and capacitance vessels in vivo in man, acting through both subtypes (ETA and ETB) of endothelin receptors. Endothelin-1 stimulates generation

A wireless, implantable sensor for continuous monitoring of blood leakage after endovascular aneurysm repair.

Endovascular aneurysm repair, a treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms, carries the risk of recurrence due to endoleaks following stent graft implantation. Since these leaks do not present with specific symptoms, regular follow-up is necessary; however, now, only imaging-based monitoring is available. This study proposes an ultrathin flexible sensor inserted endovascularly with a stent to detect type I endoleaks, which pose the highest rupture risk. A coplanar capacitive sensor was attached to the stent graft using a specially developed flexible thermal adhesive to monitor blood leakage, wit

Association of pulmonary artery capacitance with long-term outcomes in acute coronary syndrome patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Hemodynamic monitoring via right heart catheterization (RHC) is critical for managing acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients with heart failure or cardiogenic shock. However, the prognostic value of RHC-derived hemodynamic indices in ACS patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD) but without heart failure or shock remains uncertain. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study included 1151 consecutive ACS patients who underwent RHC during hospitalization from 2007 to 2016. After excluding patients with shock, pulmonary edema, and severe valvular disease, 750 ACS patients

Effects of progestogens on haemostasis.

Epidemiological data suggested an involvement of the progestogen component in the pathomechanism of venous and arterial diseases during intake of oral contraceptives. The influence of progestogens on haemostasis parameters depend on type and dose of the progestogen, the presence of an estrogen, the route of application, and the duration of use. Treatment of women with progestogen-only preparations caused only minor effects on coagulation and fibrinolysis. Similarly, during hormone replacement therapy with natural estrogens, the additional application of progestogens induced no unfavourable cha

Pulmonary arterial compliance is a useful predictor of pulmonary vascular disease in congenital heart disease.

Histopathological assessment of the pulmonary arteries is crucial to determine the surgical indications in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) and intractable pulmonary vascular disease (PVD). We aimed to clarify whether pulmonary hemodynamic parameters can predict PVD in patients with CHD and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) We performed histopathological evaluations of lung specimens and cardiac catheterizations in 27 patients with CHD-PAH. We divided these patients into the patients with and without PVD, and compared pulmonary hemodynamic parameters including pulmonary arteria

Fluid-structure interactions in the xylem: A nonlinear reaction-diffusion model of hydraulic segmentation and pressure-actuated microvalves.

While the Cohesion-Tension theory explains primary advective sap ascent, standard continuous models often neglect the mechanical regulatory role of bordered pits during secondary transport, such as capillary refilling. To address this, we model the conifer xylem as a network of pressure-actuated elastic microvalves governed by fluid-structure interactions. By coupling Darcy flow with state-dependent hydraulic capacitance and aquaporin-mediated transcellular refilling, we derive a macroscopic, asymmetric Fisher-Kolmogorov reaction-diffusion equation. Analytically, unimpeded fluid recovery propa

SAR-Constrained Wireless Power Transfer Modeling for an Implantable Optical Neurostimulator Sensors.

This study investigates the optimal operating conditions for an implantable photonic stimulation device, focusing on energy delivery efficiency and electromagnetic safety in biological tissue. COMSOL Multiphysics simulations were conducted to evaluate key light source parameters, including wavelength, output power, and incident angle. A transmitting RF coil was designed at a 1.35 MHz resonance frequency for wireless power transfer (WPT), and its resonant characteristics were analyzed using inductance and capacitance values. Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) simulations were performed with a 10 g

Pulmonary Artery Wall Thickness Assessed by Optical Coherence Tomography Correlates With Pulmonary Hemodynamics in Children With Congenital Heart Disease.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial (PA) wall thickening evaluated by optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been reported in adults with PA hypertension. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of OCT for preoperative assessment of the PA wall in children with congenital heart disease (CHD). METHODS AND RESULTS: Participants comprised 39 patients with ventricular septal defect, atrial septal defect, or patent ductus arteriosus. Attempts were made to evaluate vessels of various diameters using OCT. Clearly observed vessels that were optimal for evaluation were selected and classi

Responses of saphenous and mesenteric veins to administration of dopamine.

Others have observed that dopamine (3,4-dihydroxyphenylethylamine) constricts resistance vessels in skin, but dilates these vessels in the mesentery. We studied the effects of dopamine on cutaneous and mesenteric veins of dogs to see if this agent also produced qualitatively different effects on the tone of capacitance vessels (veins) in these vascular beds. The lateral saphenous or the left colic vein was perfused at constant flow with blood from a femoral artery. Pressures at the tip of the perfusion cannula and at the tip of a catheter 15 cm downstream were recorded continuously. Increases

Two-Point Stretchable Electrode Array for Endoluminal Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Measurements of Lipid-Laden Atherosclerotic Plaques.

Four-point electrode systems are commonly used for electric impedance measurements of biomaterials and tissues. We introduce a 2-point system to reduce electrode polarization for heterogeneous measurements of vascular wall. Presence of endoluminal oxidized low density lipoprotein (oxLDL) and lipids alters the electrochemical impedance that can be measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). We developed a catheter-based 2-point micro-electrode configuration for intravascular deployment in New Zealand White rabbits. An array of 2 flexible round electrodes, 240 µm in diameter and se

Fetal-derived adrenomedullin mediates the innate immune milieu of the placenta.

The remodeling of maternal uterine spiral arteries (SAs) is an essential process for ensuring low-resistance, high-capacitance blood flow to the growing fetus. Failure of SAs to remodel is causally associated with preeclampsia, a common and life-threatening complication of pregnancy that is harmful to both mother and fetus. Here, using both loss-of-function and gain-of-function genetic mouse models, we show that expression of the pregnancy-related peptide adrenomedullin (AM) by fetal trophoblast cells is necessary and sufficient to promote appropriate recruitment and activation of maternal ute
