Current Distribution of Selected Vector-borne Diseases in Domestic Dogs From Bucharest, Romania.

BACKGROUND: Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs) include various illnesses affecting dogs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of major CVBDs in domestic dogs in Bucharest, Romania's largest urban centre, which is situated along the Dâmbovița River in the southeastern region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The present study included 317 dogs presented to a veterinary hospital for routine health examinations or specialised consultations between August 2020 and August 2024. Two rapid serological tests (SNAP 4Dx Plus and SNAP Leishmania) were used to assess infection rates. RESUL

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards vector-borne diseases in changing climate in Finland.

With climate change, the geographic distribution of some VBDs has expanded, highlighting the need for adaptation, and managing the risks associated with emergence in new areas. We conducted a questionnaire survey on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) about vector-borne diseases (VBDs) among sample of Finnish residents. The questions were scored and the level of KAP was determined based on scoring as poor, fair, good, or excellent. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the associations of different KAP levels with sex, age, education, and possible previous VPD infe

Forecasting deep learning-based risk assessment of vector-borne diseases using hybrid methodology.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is rapidly becoming Malaysia's most pressing health concern, as the reported cases have nearly doubled over the past decade. Without efficacious antiviral medications, vector control remains the primary strategy for battling dengue, while the recently introduced tetravalent immunization is being evaluated. The most significant and dangerous risk increasing recently is vector-borne illnesses. These illnesses induce significant human sickness and are transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods such as fleas, parasites, and mosquitos. A thorough grasp of various factors is ne

WebGIS-Based Real-Time Surveillance and Response System for Vector-Borne Infectious Diseases.

The diseases transmitted through vectors such as mosquitoes are named vector-borne diseases (VBDs), such as malaria, dengue, and leishmaniasis. Malaria spreads by a vector named Anopheles mosquitos. Dengue is transmitted through the bite of the female vector Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito. The female Phlebotomine sandfly is the vector that transmits leishmaniasis. The best way to control VBDs is to identify breeding sites for their vectors. This can be efficiently accomplished by the Geographical Information System (GIS). The objective was to find the relation between climatic fact

Time-Scale Analysis and Parameter Fitting for Vector-Borne Diseases with Spatial Dynamics.

Vector-borne diseases are progressively spreading in a growing number of countries, and it has the potential to invade new areas and habitats. From the dynamical perspective, the spatial-temporal interaction of models that try to adjust to such events is rich and challenging. The first challenge is to address the dynamics of vectors (very fast and local) and the dynamics of humans (very heterogeneous and non-local). The objective of this work is to use the well-known Ross-Macdonald models, identifying different time scales, incorporating human spatial movements and estimate in a suitable way t

Serological surveillance of vector-borne and zoonotic diseases among hunters in eastern Poland.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Many etiological agents of zoonoses are considered as significant biological hazard to people visiting forested areas frequently, for instance, hunters. They may be exposed to ticks, rodents, and birds as well as excreta/secretions of wild animals or contaminated water and soil. Hence, this population is at risk of contracting infection with pathogens such as Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia spp., tick-borne encephalitis virus, Bartonella spp., Francisella tularensis, Echinococcus spp., or hantaviruses. The aim of the study was

Detection of canine vector-borne diseases in eastern Poland by ELISA and PCR.

The aim of the study was to establish the prevalence of Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Borrelia burgdorferi in dogs in eastern Poland and to determine the factors associated with exposure (seroposity) or infection (PCR). Anti-A. phagocytophilum, anti-B. burgdorferi and anti-E. canis antibodies were determined in 400 dogs, using the SNAP 4Dx ® test (IDEXX Laboratories). In addition, PCRs were performed for the detection of E. canis, A. phagocytophilum and B. burgdorferi DNA. In reference to the risk factor analysis, a regression logistic model was determined for each aetiologica

Climatic drivers of vector-borne diseases: A nationwide causal inference study in China.

OBJECTIVES: Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) impose a significant burden in China, with complex spatiotemporal patterns driven by heterogeneous and nonlinear climatic influences, complicating the identification of causal drivers. METHODS: To fill this gap, we conducted a nationwide study across 365 city-level regions in mainland China, covering nearly 0.8 million cases of eight types of VBDs, with a time span of 18 years. An empirical dynamic modeling framework was applied to reconstruct system dynamics directly from time-series data, and identify causal climatic drivers for eight VBDs via conver

Key Facets for the Elimination of Vector-Borne Diseases Filariasis, Leishmaniasis, and Malaria.

Vector-borne diseases are caused by microbes transmitted to humans through vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, flies, and other arthropods. Three vector-borne diseases, filariasis, leishmaniasis, and malaria, are significant parasitic diseases which are responsible for long-term morbidity and mortality affecting millions globally. These diseases exhibit several similarities in transmission, health impacts, and the challenges faced in their control and prevention. By identifying these commonalities and fostering cooperation among disease control programs, we can strengthen our efforts to combat

Modelling vertical transmission in vector-borne diseases with applications to Rift Valley fever.

We present two ordinary differential equation models for Rift Valley fever (RVF) transmission in cattle and mosquitoes. We extend existing models for vector-borne diseases to include an asymptomatic host class and vertical transmission in vectors. We define the basic reproductive number, ℛ(0), and analyse the existence and stability of equilibrium points. We compute sensitivity indices of ℛ(0) and a reactivity index (that measures epidemicity) to parameters for baseline wet and dry season values. ℛ(0) is most sensitive to the mosquito biting and death rates. The reactivity index is most sensit

Using the gravity model to estimate the spatial spread of vector-borne diseases.

The gravity models are commonly used spatial interaction models. They have been widely applied in a large set of domains dealing with interactions amongst spatial entities. The spread of vector-borne diseases is also related to the intensity of interaction between spatial entities, namely, the physical habitat of pathogens’ vectors and/or hosts, and urban areas, thus humans. This study implements the concept behind gravity models in the spatial spread of two vector-borne diseases, nephropathia epidemica and Lyme borreliosis, based on current knowledge on the transmission mechanism of these dis

Climate change and threat of vector-borne diseases in India: are we prepared?

It is unequivocal that climate change is happening and is likely to expand the geographical distribution of several vector-borne diseases, including malaria and dengue etc. to higher altitudes and latitudes. India is endemic for six major vector-borne diseases (VBD) namely malaria, dengue, chikungunya, filariasis, Japanese encephalitis and visceral leishmaniasis. Over the years, there has been reduction in the incidence of almost all the diseases except chikungunya which has re-emerged since 2005. The upcoming issue of climate change has surfaced as a new threat and challenge for ongoing effor

Potential of emodepside for vector-borne disease control.

BACKGROUND: Emodepside is an anthelmintic used in veterinary medicine that is currently under investigation in human clinical trials for the treatment of soil-transmitted helminths and possibly Onchocerca volvulus. Emodepside targets the calcium-activated voltage-gated potassium slowpoke 1 (SLO-1) channels of presynaptic nerves of pharynx and body wall muscle cells of nematodes leading to paralysis, reduced locomotion and egg laying, starvation, and death. Emodepside also has activity against Drosophila melanogaster SLO-1 channels. Orthologous SLO-1 genes are present in Anopheles gambiae and A

Elimination of vector-borne transmission of Chagas disease.

The control of the vector-borne transmission of Chagas disease in Brazil was organized as a national program in 1975, when two large entomological and sero-epidemiological surveys were conducted in the country in order to identify areas at highest risk of transmission and to guide interventions regarding the chemical treatment of domestic vectors of the disease. The authors present the baseline data gathered through these studies and compare them with more recent data. The evaluation performed shows that the transmission by Triatoma infestans is virtually interrupted and that the transmission

Bridging borders for eliminating vector-borne diseases: a shared responsibility for the Indian states.

India bears one of the highest burdens of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) globally, underscoring the urgency of effective control and elimination measures. While multiple factors contribute to the VBD prevalence in India, interstate migration poses a growing challenge to its control, particularly for diseases targeted for elimination. A large influx of migrants from endemic regions continuously moves into urban centres, heightening the risk of transmission into areas that were previously under control. Although VBD elimination programmes operate at the national level, states implement them in a d
