Nonverbal and verbal learning: a comparative study of children and adolescents with 22q11 deletion syndrome, non-syndromal Nonverbal Learning Disorder and memory disorder.

The 22q11 deletion syndrome (DS) is a common genetic disorder, and a Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD) is considered as a predominant part of the phenotype. The focus of our study was to investigate the role of learning in this NLD characteristic. We compared results of children and adolescents with 22q11 DS; with non-syndromal NLD and with memory disorders on multi-trial verbal and nonverbal learning tests. Better verbal and worse nonverbal IQs were significantly discrepant for the 22q11 DS sample and for the NLD sample; the memory sample had a FS-IQ in the normal range with lower verbal IQ.

Underlying neurological dysfunction in children with language, speech or learning difficulties and a verbal IQ--performance IQ discrepancy.

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: We investigated the relationship between possible underlying neurological dysfunction and a significant discrepancy between verbal IQ/performance IQ (VIQ-PIQ) in children with language, speech or learning difficulties. METHODS: In a retrospective study, we analysed data obtained from intelligence testing and neurological evaluation in 49 children with a significant VIQ-PIQ discrepancy (> or = 25 points) who were referred because of language, speech or learning difficulties to the Multidisciplinary University Centre for Logopedics and Audiology (MUCLA) of the University H

Comparison of verbal learning and memory in children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) have deficits in verbal learning and recall. However, the specificity of these deficits has not been adequately tested. In the current study, verbal learning and memory performance of children with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure was compared to children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a disorder commonly seen in alcohol-exposed children. METHODS: Performance on the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) was examined in 3 groups of children (N=22/group): (i) heavy prenatal alcohol expo

Short-term effects of using verbal instructions and demonstration at the beginning of learning a complex skill in figure skating.

This study examined whether providing verbal instructions plus demonstration and task repetition facilitates the early acquisition of a sport skill for which learners had a prior knowledge of the individual motor components. After one demonstration of the task by an expert, 18 novice skaters practiced a figure skating jump during a 15-min. period. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups: a group provided with a verbal instruction that specified the subgoals of the task (Subgoals group), a group provided with a verbal instruction that used a metaphor (Metaphoric group), and a group n

Verbal cognitive functioning and learning in girls treated for acute lymphoblastic leukemia by chemotherapy with or without cranial irradiation.

Neuropsychological problems have frequently been reported following treatment of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), however, partly because of the heterogeneity of the previously studied samples, the specific nature of these deficits is still a matter of debate. These problems, however, appear to be related more to the combination of cranial radiation therapy (CRT) and intrathecal chemotherapy (ITC) than to ITC alone. In this study, we evaluated a homogenous group of 19 girls between the ages of 7 and 11 years, 30 months after the completion of treatment. Nine received cranial radiation and c

Adapting the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised with Semantic Cues: Assessing diagnostic utility in a Spanish clinical population.

Background: The Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) is widely used for assessing episodic memory. In this study, we evaluated the HVLT-R with Semantic Cues (HVLT-R-SC), an adapted version incorporating semantic cues to improve diagnostic utility. The assessment was conducted in a Spanish cohort comprising cognitively unimpaired controls, individuals with multi-domain amnestic mild cognitive impairment (md-aMCI), and early Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methods: 684 participants (333 controls, 141 md-aMCI, and 210 early AD) completed the HVLT-R-SC. Effect sizes were calculated to quantify

Consideration of different scoring approaches for a verbal incidental learning measure from the WAIS-IV using hippocampal volumes.

Objective: While Spencer's verbal incidental learning (IL) task-from Vocabulary and Similarities subtests of the WAIS-has been validated relative to traditional memory measures and Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology, the effectiveness of the particular scoring method used has not been assessed relative to alternative scoring weightings. The purpose of this study was to compare original and alternative scoring methods of this IL task by using an AD biomarker-benchmark to arrive at an optimal approach. Methods: Fifty-five memory-clinic patients aged 59-87 received neuropsychological assessment,

A process approach to verbal memory assessment: Exploratory evidence of inefficient learning in women remitted from anorexia nervosa.

Introduction: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with deficits in set-shifting and cognitive flexibility, yet less is known about the persistence of these deficits after recovery and how they might contribute to reported difficulties organizing and learning new information. To address this question, the current study applied a process-focused approach, that accounts for errors and strategies by which a score is achieved, to investigate the relationship between verbal memory and executive function in women remitted from AN. Method: Twenty-six women remitted from anorexia nervosa (RAN) and 25 c

Fractionating the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test: Distinct roles of large-scale cortical networks in prodromal Alzheimer's disease.

Successful episodic memory calls upon a number of different cognitive processes that are supported by the coordination of several large-scale cortical networks. Previous work from our group has demonstrated dissociable anatomic substrates at different stages of memory in patients with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). The aim of the current study was to extend the understanding of brain-behavior associations underlying a commonly administered neuropsychological assessment of verbal episodic memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test; RAVLT) by determining the cortical network contributi

Verbal Learning and Memory After Cochlear Implantation in Postlingually Deaf Adults: Some New Findings with the CVLT-II.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the importance of verbal learning and memory in speech and language processing, this domain of cognitive functioning has been virtually ignored in clinical studies of hearing loss and cochlear implants in both adults and children. In this article, we report the results of two studies that used a newly developed visually based version of the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition (CVLT-II), a well-known normed neuropsychological measure of verbal learning and memory. DESIGN: The first study established the validity and feasibility of a computer-controlled visual ver

Humans with Type-2 Diabetes Show Abnormal Long-Term Potentiation-Like Cortical Plasticity Associated with Verbal Learning Deficits.

BACKGROUND: Type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) accelerates cognitive aging and increases risk of Alzheimer's disease. Rodent models of T2DM show altered synaptic plasticity associated with reduced learning and memory. Humans with T2DM also show cognitive deficits, including reduced learning and memory, but the relationship of these impairments to the efficacy of neuroplastic mechanisms has never been assessed. OBJECTIVE: Our primary objective was to compare mechanisms of cortical plasticity in humans with and without T2DM. Our secondary objective was to relate plasticity measures to standard mea

Detecting simulated memory impairment with the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test: implications of base rates and study generalizability.

The accuracy of the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) for detecting simulated neuropsychological impairment was investigated using discriminant function analyses and cross-validation procedures. In Study 1, a discriminant function analysis, using six RAVLT variables, correctly classified 80% of 50 simulating and 50 non-simulating participants. Base rates were changed and this discriminant function was tested in Study 2 with a 33% base rate of simulation. The discriminant function correctly classified 75% of 20 simulators and 90% of 40 non-simulators, yielding an overall classification

Working Memory and Language Contribution to Verbal Learning and Memory in Drug-Resistant Unilateral Focal Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

We aimed to investigate the working memory (WM) and language separate contributions to verbal learning and memory in patients with unilateral drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy (drTLE); additionally, we explored the mediating role of WM on the relationship between the number of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and short-term verbal memory. We retrospectively enrolled 70 patients with left (LTLE; n = 44) and right (RTLE; n = 26) drTLE. About 40 similar (age and education) healthy controls were used to determine impairments of groups at WM, language (naming and verbal fluency), and verbal learning

Using sensor-fusion and machine-learning algorithms to assess acute pain in non-verbal infants: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Objective pain assessment in non-verbal populations is clinically challenging due to their inability to express their pain via self-report. Repetitive exposures to acute or prolonged pain lead to clinical instability, with long-term behavioural and cognitive sequelae in newborn infants. Strong analgesics are also associated with medical complications, potential neurotoxicity and altered brain development. Pain scores performed by bedside nurses provide subjective, observer-dependent assessments rather than objective data for infant pain management; the required observations are l

Cluster subtypes on the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition (CVLT-II) in a traumatic brain injury sample.

Subtypes of learning and memory on the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition (CVLT-II; Delis, Kramer, Kaplan, & Ober, 2000) were examined in a clinical sample of 223 persons with traumatic brain injury (TBI), screened to remove individuals with complicating premorbid (e.g., psychiatric) or comorbid (e.g., financial compensation-seeking) histories. The z scores from 4 key CVLT-II variables were entered into a two-stage cluster analysis. These variables were selected to represent 4 latent constructs, identified in a recent confirmatory factor analysis: List A1 (Attention Span), List A5

Performance discrepancies on the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) in children with traumatic brain injury.

One hundred sixty-seven children with traumatic brain injury (TBI), selected from an 8-year series of consecutive referrals to a Midwestern rehabilitation hospital, completed the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Third Edition (WISC-III) within 1 year after injury. A large proactive interference (PI) effect, defined as performance on the second list that was at least 1.5 standard deviations below that on the 1st one, was statistically significantly more common in this clinical sample (21%) than in the CVLT-C standardiza

Methods for assessment of Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test performance in memory clinic patients and healthy adults - at the cross-roads of learning theory and clinical utility.

Background: Knowledge is still lacking regarding the preferred method for evaluation of learning in the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT). Validity of different methods was examined by the effect size in differentiating diagnostic stages in memory clinic patients versus healthy adults and the strength of association between RAVLT performance and brain atrophy. Method: The study included individuals with dementia (n = 247), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI, n = 709), Subjective Cognitive Impairment (SCI, n = 175) and cognitively unimpaired adults serving as healthy controls (HC, n = 102).

Comparison of core and process scores on the California Verbal Learning Test-3 for Parkinson's disease and essential tremor patients.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET) are two disorders known to lead to executive dysfunction, presumably through distinct pathways to the frontal lobes via the striatum or cerebellum, respectively. Memory functioning in PD and ET patients has been previously suggested to be adversely impacted by executive dysfunction. The aims of this exploratory study were to compare memory performance between and within groups on the California Verbal Learning Test - 3 (CVLT-3) through the analysis of core and process scores and to understand the relationship of these scores with
